Yankees receive
SP Javier Vazquez
RP Boone Logan

Braves receive
OF Melky Cabrera
2 Minor Leaguers

I like this move for the yankees. vazquez can sure dominate at times and having him as a 3rd starter (at best) really strengthens the rotation. Does Melky's departure mean they want to bring back Damon? They want Holliday? MOAR Brett Gardner?

Nooooooooooooooooo, not Melky!!!!! :(:(:(:(

vazquez wasnt great in pinstripes his first go round, but the last 3 years he's been great. over 200 k in each season and over 200 IP.

I don't care, I loved Melky. :(

you also get another guy called Boone. Maybe he can strike out the red sox in the playoffs and then have 2 boone moments. he could be the boone of their existence!

Yet another awful Yankees move this offseason. Way to go!

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 11:41 AM
how is this an awful move? vazquez has been great for a few years and melky (believe it or not yankee fans) is an AVERAGE outfielder.

According to baseball prospectus his VORP (value over replacement player) is -5.7. that means an average outfielder would have given you an extra 5.7 runs this year.

Have the Yankees re-signed Johnny Damon yet? I think we have our answer with this trade if not.

the outfield defense is taking a hit though... which doesnt make sense after they acquired granderson to make it better.

How useful is Melky to the Braves? What we need is a good bat. Chipper can't provide that anymore, as much as I like the guy.

WHAT?!?!?!?

Wow... what a horrific move. We tried Vazquez.... he sucked. And now Melky is gone... wow.... What a horrible move.

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 02:37 PM
how is melky being gone so bad? he cost you almost 6 runs more than the "average" OF. vazquez may bomb in NY again, but the last few year's he's been a stud.

Jglaubman

He did pretty well last year. Had a bunch of clutch hits. Has a great throwing arm. Plus, he and Cano are best friends.

And the Yankees tried Vazquez already.... I have no doubt that he will post a +4.5 ERA.

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 02:52 PM
he hit .274 with 10 SB, 13 HRs, 66 R, and 68 RBIs.

thats like marlon byrd with less power.

Jglaubman
12-22-2009, 02:55 PM
But he was great in the field, great arm, great in the clubhouse, best friends with Cano... there was no need to trade him for a pitcher that has already failed in New York.

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 02:56 PM
marlon byrd with less power for a pitcher who has over 200k, 200 IP the last 3 seasons. i can understand that you have an attachment to melky cabrera, but truth is he's an average player.

Jglaubman
12-22-2009, 03:06 PM
He had similar numbers with the Expos before he went to the Yankees.

The Yankees have had a lot of trouble with clubhouse chemistry in the last decade. They finally found a good combo. Why start messing with it? The Yankees needed one more pitcher... take a chance on Ben Sheets. Hell, I'd rather see what Wang has left than make this trade. Now they need to get another outfielder... and it looks like it won't be Damon. More ways to screw up the chemistry.

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 03:08 PM
chemistry is overrated. when you lose chemistry is bad, when you win it's good. chemistry doesnt determine winning. it's the other way around.

Then what happened the last 6 years in the playoffs for the Yanks? They had winning seasons, and then lost it. Guys who were hitting suddenly weren't. Guys who were pitching suddenly weren't. They weren't a team, just a bunch of All Stars.

I just now remembered that Matsui is gone too... I am becoming very uninterested in the 2010 season very quick.

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 03:24 PM
sooooooo youre uninterested because your team has sabathia, burnett, vazquez, a-rod, jeter, cano, posada, granderson, teixeira, and rivera?

Jglaubman
12-22-2009, 03:32 PM
I'm sure when Opening Day comes around I will be watching. But with all the, imo, horrible moves the Yankees have made this off season, I'm finding myself kind of uninterested. (Letting Matsui go to sign freaking Nick Johnson!?. Now this move. And now they will have to get another outfielder. Trading away young potential talent for a guy who hit .200 against lefties).

bermuddy
12-22-2009, 03:46 PM
dude, nick johnson will a GREAT DH. he has an OBP of over .400. with jeter at the top of the order and johnson batting second, a-rod is going to get more rbis than ever.

Haha, so long Melky.

why am i the only one who thinks this is a good trade?

tridentgum0
12-22-2009, 04:16 PM
It's better for the Yankees than the Braves, definitely. Though, the Braves really don't neeed Vasquez, what with Jurrjens and Hudson. Melky's not the bad we need though.

gmarsh
12-22-2009, 04:16 PM
I don't think it hurts the Yanks too much. But Melky was a solid player, so any solid player that leaves New York is good for me :D

I like it when good players leave the Yankees too. But it's better when they leave Boston.

Let's see them dump that lame First Baseman of theirs.

bermuddy

i dont like it when yankees get stud pitching for mediocre talent, but im glad to see the braves lose vazquez :D

Braves > you. :p

Mark Bellhorn > Indians

Indians > Braves. I admittedly can't pick.

They both fail compared to the Pirates.

Well, duh. The Pirates play in ****sburgh!! Everyone there sucks.

Yankees should get Carl Crawford :p (Even though I know the Rays would never give up Crawford lol).

One underrated outfielder who is an outstanding fielder, hitter, and runs the bases like no other(one of the fastest players in the league) is Joey Gathright, CF for the Blue Jays but is currently in the minor league. I'm sure as hell the Yankees could use someone like him out there. Especially on the bases, you can never get enough speed on the bases.

was the Yanks acquiring Vazquez seriously worthy of its own thread?

1) the guy has already been exposed to the AL East and failed
2) OH BOY!! he posted a sub-3.0 ERA with Braves! in the NL. see above
3) if Vazquez was the Yank's response to the Sox getting Lackey, then I say HA!

dude, gathright cant hit... at all. thats why he's been on like 6 teams and is always being sent down, but i'll agree that he's a speed demon.

yes, it's worthy of it's own thread. who made you the general forums thread king? i see tons of worthless threads with minimal discussion. AND, i'll have you know we're not allowed a general baseball thread :D

1 - that was a long time ago and he came from montreal.
2 - i dont understand this statement one bit. the NL has many quality teams. get off your AL bandwagon. half the DHs in the league cant hit anyway
3 - The yanks are the champs, they dont need to respond to anyone.

Well, duh. The Pirates play in ****sburgh!! Everyone there sucks.

1. no. the pirates suck, but leave the city out of it. There is a reason why it was chosen to host the G20 Summit: because it is an example of a city making the transition from industrial to science/biomedical well.

2. i really hate *****y yankees fans who feel that it is their god-given right to rape 26(ish) other teams of their best players, and then whine about it. you get a guy who would be a 1 or 2 on 85% of the league to be your 4th guy and you complain about giving up only a 4th outfielder because the other team couldnt afford to pay said pitcher? get a life. I can't wait for the day of a cap when the yankees will have to compete on a somewhat level playing field.

hardly the braves best player horrible trade. so the 26 mill or so the yankees pay as a luxery tax does not help your team. Its the yankees fault that pretty much the olny time a Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and a Oakland sell out cause there playing the Yankees. Highest payroll will not win the series every time. Look at the Yanks from 78 to 96.

so the yankees visiting for a series a year makes up for the rest of the year, when thousands stay away from watching a team that has no shot at anything?

the highest payroll grants that you will be highly competitive. the yanks have missed one playoff this decade, and the more you spend, the much better chance you have of making the playoffs.

this system is murder for smaller market teams. i was crushed when bay was traded, just like the awful inevitable feeling padres fans will have when adrian gonzalez is a red sock and twins fans, when joe mauer replaces posada in NY. having 4 teams with all the best players (with a broken draft system) is terrible for the long-term

have you ever considered how bad it must be for an indians fan to watch sabathia go against cliff lee in the world series?

there is a reason why the NFL is the number one sport in the USA. The Green Bay Packers would have been moved or contracted if they were a baseball team.
