Per the official PS2 discussion thread:
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15501
Hey, I worked on Rock Band (Project Leader), and wanted to respond to this thread to give everyone a bit of insight about how we made the choices we did in developing the PS2 version.
The PS2 version of Rock Band was developed by Pi, but we were closely involved with development and feature selection at every step. They did an awesome job, and totally delivered on the spec that we developed. During development we had to make choices to ensure the best game possible for the system. When we were addressing challenges in getting Rock Band onto the PS2, we chose to prioritize core gameplay. You can play 4-player songs at Expert, and the framerate is a reliable 60 FPS, because this was the priority for us, as it has been with every rhythm action game we've ever made.
--From a development perspective, there are two main reasons we couldn’t support character creation on the PS2 version.
1. The characters designed by the character creator on the 360 and PS3 are very processor-expensive to render, because the system was designed assuming next-gen graphics power. Down-rezzing that system to fit on the PS2 would have been a huge undertaking, and the results would not have looked good. Remember, ALL 4 CHARACTERS have to look good in Rock Band.
2. The 4-player track graphics alone are a big rendering burden for the PS2, especially at the harder difficulties when there are lots of notes on screen. For it to play well, we have to guarantee 60 FPS at all times, which in practice means that it has to be optimized for the worst-case scenario (in case you are curious, it’s Run to the Hills, 4-player, expert). The vocal pitch analysis chews up still more processing time. So, once the core game was implemented, there was very little processing power left over for complex character and venue rendering. FWIW, on-disc space was not the primary concern.
Since we knew we couldn’t do everything we would have liked, our choice was to focus on the gameplay. We stand behind that choice, and we think that being able to play 4-player Rock Band on a $129.00 console is actually pretty cool. I hope this explains some of the reasoning that went into the development of the PS2. We didn’t just dump it off, we were totally focused on it, and we think we made reasonable calls, given the trade-offs we were faced with. While we would have loved to fit all of the next gen features into the PS2 version, we’ve still ended up with a great game that we’re proud of and that we think PS2 users will enjoy.

You should use the money to buy something like this since it seems more like your type of game:

Meh, I guess that's what you get when you cheap out and get the lesser version of a game. Put down the extra $300 or whatever and get a 360 like everyone else and you won't have any problems, I suppose. *shrug*

You can tell the children have arrived. :D
I understand where you are coming from. I pre-ordered the PS2 version. Once I saw that it was going to be limited (no downloadable content) I chose to purchase a 360. My PS2 version is going to a friend who is happy having a souped up GH with drums.
I, as well, would not have been as happy with the PS2 version...but I did a little research before hand. You probably should have done a little as well before you made a $160 investment in a product you are not happy with.
As I said, I understand your disappointment, but your response leaves quite a bit to be desired. A post I read earlier this morning shows that a large amount of adults (20+) post here and more than likely will have little sympathy for people who respond as you do. I am sure that this post will get me a "stfu noob" or "duche bagel" response , but please remember that you will be dealing with adults here. Name calling don't quite cut the mustard.

I would just save my money and put it toward and Xbox360. Then afterwards by the next gen version about a month or so later when I'd have the money saved up.

Honestly I'd get RB for PS2 since it costs less and I don't really care about custom characters.

This is a great thread, let me say, first of all. Looks like there's a little Rock Band for everyone. Except that one kid.
When I first saw that it was out for the PS2 as well, I thought to myself, "huh, that's gonna be a real strain on the PS2 rendering all those big scenes with the crowds and characters." Looks like it was a bit too much for that little system to handle. If I didn't already have a 360, I'd probably have gotten it for the PS2, and been totally okay without character creation. It's all about the music, dude!

Yeah, I was going to get it for PS2 as well, so I didn't have to pawn the PS3/360 off my brother, but I did a little research. No characters or BWT equaled no dice for me. It is a bit of a let-down, but not really worth getting riled up for.

I disagree, part of the reason I never got a GH was because of the lack of character creation. If I am gonna have a big 160$ fantasy of being a rock star I might as well make my own persona instead of borrowing from a list of pre-rendered ones.
I'm having my drummer buy a new tatoo everytime my band five stars a new song, which in turn gets me more motivated to play my best.
Not to mention the look on the rest of the bands face when I got that squid tatoo oh so provacatively placed sticking out of my pants was priceless!

I think my first response adequately addressed the thread subject. In view of some of the responses, I don't believe further discussion is warranted... it is what it is at this point.
