Hi there folks

I've seen similar issues/problems on here and just wanted to add my issue and also show that I've found an interesting twist on this ....

I found a ROCK BAND bundle for Playstation 2 --- interestingly enough, the parts inside all are marked for Playstion 3 with a sticker that says PS2 compatible. I guess that explains some other folks issues, the only difference between the bundles for PS2 and PS3 is the game. Anywho...so I set up all the instruments, and then I put in the game. I get disc error, the game won't even load at all, it just sits on the browser screen. I tried my other PS2 games, they work perfectly fine, including all of the GH series games. I kept trying, and trying even the suggestions over at the support website. Still doesn't work ---- I took the game over to my brothers and tried it on his PS2 and it works fine. Loads up with no disc error or nothing.

These are the suggestions over at the support website for this issue (my post is continued below):

QUESTION
Why I am seeing a 'Disc Read Error' message when I start a game?

Answer

The 'Disc Read Error' error message, 'Please Insert a Playstation 2 Formatted Disc' error message, or the 'No Data' error message is an indicator by your system that the console is having difficulty reading the game disc. This could be for many reasons; usually this is because the game disc is damaged or unreadable. However, in some situations, this can be a sign of a more serious issue with your Sony PlayStation 2. Try all of the steps listed below to troubleshoot the error:

Check the game disc.

1. If there are any noticeable scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth.
Note: Do not rub hard and do not rub in a circular motion as this could further damage the game disc.
2. If there aren’t any noticeable scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try using that game disc in another PlayStation 2.
* If the game disc works in another system, this is an indicator that your PlayStation 2 may be damaged. For information on getting your system repaired or replaced, you will want to contact Sony directly for assistance at 1-800-345-SONY.
* If the game disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the disc is damaged or defective. To acquire a replacement game disc, you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.

Unplug all non-official peripherals.

1. If you are using any non-official PlayStation 2 peripherals, make sure they are unplugged prior to starting the console.
* Example: Nyko AirFlow, MadCatz MicroCon, Mad Catz Dual Force 2

Remove the corrupted game save data file.

1. Power on the PlayStation 2 without a game disc inside; this will display the PlayStation 2 main menu.
2. Select Browser and press the X button.
3. Select the Memory Card that you are using by highlighting it and pressing the X button.
4. Find and delete any save file with a name matching the game you are having trouble with by highlighting the game file and pressing the X button.
5. Once all of the save files have been removed, restart the console with the game disc inside.
6. Try playing the game.

....... as I mentioned, everything else is working fine on the other games, so I am not sure that it is a problem with my PS2. As I said, I've tried all of these suggestions and had no luck. The only thing I could think is that I have one of the first generation PS2's and my brother has one of the first slim versions that came out. My guess is this is the case, but I am not understanding the problem with that as I believe there is not very much of a hardware difference between the two version ... and most of the difference is the slim versions have cut back on some of the parts inside.

So! With that being said .... I would think if it wasn't compatible with a particular version of PS2 there would be an announcement or some sort of press release or official posting somewhere. As far as I know, the Playstation 2 Rock Band game works with the Playstion 2 console, and there is nothing that says it isn't a Playstation 2 console.

Thanks for reading and any suggestions in advance!

Allen

an update on my thread and maybe insight into what some other folks are dealing with.

... I called Sony's 1800 phone number last night and what they told me was since I have an older model PS2 that they are generally having a hard time reading some of the newer game discs. So it looks like you have to invent in one of the slim PS2s if you are planning on getting Rock Band for PS2.

Wow, I thought I typed this message myself Nacho, I had the exact same thing happen to me. I went to my brother-n-laws and his PS2 played the game just fine without issue.

The weird thing to me is that he got his PS2 a year before I got mine. When we compare model numbers his is the SCPH-39001 and mine is the SCPH-50001.

I went so far as to confirm all of the settings he had were duplicated on my unit and it did not help. I noticed that his unit has different driver models and browsers so that could be part of the problem but my numbers are higher and therefore seemingly newer versions so I just dont get it.

We got The Simpsons Movie game brand new and it works fine so I just dont know what to do.

Sounds like the newer PS2 is having problems. I have a gen 1 PS2 that I waited in line for on release day that we pulled out of moth balls for this game. I bought the PS3 version and game for the PS2 since it was sold out. The game itself plays perfectly. You might want to google "Ps2 laser calibration" and see if you can get it to work for you. Some of the newer fat consoles had disk read errors because of the drives not being calibrated properly.

Just thought I would chime in here. Sorry for the lengthy story, I put a shorter one at the bottom.

Long Story:
Yeah, that sounds just like the problem I'm having. I have a slim PS2 and bought the bundle package of the game (once I finally found one-but that's another long story). I got home, set up the peripherals, had my entire family excited that we were finally going to play this game we had waited a month for, then I insert the disc and the screen remains blank, and if you listen to the drive it makes a steady scratchy pulse like the laser is trying to read it. After about fifteen minutes of taking the game out, cleaning it, putting it back in, fiddling with how it sits on the spinner, etc., the game finally loads. We play for awhile, then I go to work, leaving the game on so everyone else can play. They finish playing and turn off the console. When I get up in the morning I decide to play Rock Band, so I go to the front room and flip on the console. Nothing happens. So i sit at the console trying to get the game to work for 30 minutes before I say screw it and go to Wal-Mart (not the one I bought the bundle at) to exchange just the game disc. Of course I get there an hour and a half before the customer service is open so I go to the back and buy just the software. I take it home thinking it was just the first disc or maybe the batch of games at the first Wal-Mart hoping the new disc will work. I get home and the new disc works just as good as the first disc.

Short Story:
Same problem. Slim PS2, a disc that came with bundle and one bought separately (both from different stores), and I have to sit in front of the console for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour just to get the game to load.

Thought:
I wonder, is this perhaps the reason EA/Harmonix/Whoever delayed the release of the PS2 version of Rock Band? I mean, I didn't even realize the date had been changed until I went to the store Dec. 18 and they didn't have the game. I mean, this probably isn't the case but if it was why would they give us a faulty game without any sort of warning? Oh well, at least I know my strum bar or kick pedal won't break anytime soon.

I guess I'm lucky, my older model PS2 (I think it's SCPH-30001) was able to read the disc.

bummer...i really dont think they would have sent out faulty games on purpose...that would be corporate suicide.

I don't think it's the newer PS2's that have trouble reading the disk

I have the brand new SHCP-70001 PS2s

It wouldn't load on mine so went to my friend's house and it worked on his, but it's older than mine

So I think it is the PS2 in general that has a problem

So I believe Rock Band for the PS2 is just Hit or Miss

I also traded PS2s with him and he stayed at my house for awhile while we jammed only to discover upon plugging in the drums about 1 min. 30 sec. into the song the drums die. The light is still on only every button becomes unresponsive

He wants his Ps2 back so I'm going to return it tomorrow-WHAT A LET DOWN-

Anyway I'm going to buy a 360 and Call of Duty 4;)

You guys have fun

I went to Best Buy to buy a new slimline PS2 and decided instead to just pick up a copy of the game and try it at home first. I could always put the bad disc in the case and return it to them, right :)

So of course the new disc doesnt work either in my system and now that I read that a new slimline didnt work either, I dont want to waste the money and try that.

The Best Buy people were shocked to hear about this error and had no advice.

It sounds to me based on our small sampling here that finding a used model in the 30000 range must be the solution.

i don't know what version my console is but i know it ends in"12."
so i had the same problem with it not loading and getting disc read error.
i called the 800# and the guy told me how to run a diagnostic on it.
take out the disc.
reset the console.
at the main screen press triangle to see the version screen.
highlight console and press x.
it'll say "diagnosis off."
make it say "on."
get yourself back to the main screen and go to the browser where you can see your memory cards and stuff.
put the disc in and it should load.....
my problem now is that after all that, i get the playstation logo and then nothing.
just a blank screen.
