Weird question:

Got RB for PS3 but don't own a ps3 yet. Instead, I'm borrowing a friends until March. I'm wondering if downloadable content I download to this temporary ps3 can eventually be transferred to my own ps3 when I get one. I guess this question applies to 360 owners as well. It seems like a flash drive should work, but on the other side of that, then people could just distribute the DLC themselves to whoever they wanted. Is there a way of transferring new songs amongst consoles?? Appreciate it, merry christmas

If you are signed into Xbox Live with your gamertag, you can download your DLC to multiple systems/hard drives. But if you are not online, you can only play DLC on the system/hard drive you purchased it for.

Unfortunately, I don't know how the PS3 DLC licensing works. :(

Yah, Xbox Live advice really helps him on his PS3...

I only have a 360, but I've heard that you can download anything bought off PSN to up to 5 consoles at no additional cost. This could mean your console and up to four it is subsequently replaced with over failure issues, or it could mean you have four lucky friends who don't have to pay for DLC on any games.

You'll have to check to be sure on where it applies, but that's what I've heard.

PS3 DLC can be downloaded to 5 seperate systems. I'd really doubt if this were possible to download a single purchased track to 5 sytems.

However, you should be able to sign in on the account you purchased the tracks on with your new system and re-download the tracks.

I'm thinking that five systems cut off might be iTunes we're thinking of. Xanthous' suggestion sounded the most legit: hopefully someone will read this, can anyone confirm that signing into your account on a new console permits you to re-obtain already purchased material? Thanks

I guess you forgot to use your reading and comprehension skills because the OP states in the second half of his post that he's also wondering about the 360 side of things..

I just downloaded about every DLC song on the 360 and took my hard drive over to a friends house. I got into the game just fine but none of my DLC would show up. It seems like it ties it to the serial number of the xbox somehow.

I'd love to find a way to use all my DLC at my friends house without having to spend another $60 to re-download the songs. Any help would be great.

That's odd. I was under the impression that it was linked with your GamerTag and that you could transport it anywhere as long as your gamertag was signed in to the xbox. Guess that's not the case. Good to know though.

Now, if you log in on your friends console, will your download history allow you to redownload the songs without having to re-purchase them?

It's not tied to the serial number or anything like that.

When you bring your HD to your friend's house, you just have to make sure you sign on to the same tag as the one you use at your house. I did this and I was able to play all my DLC at my friend's house.

It IS linked to your Gamertag. I moved my profile and gamesave file to my memory card and went to my friend's house. When I signed in, all my DLC was there. I went to Marketplace and redownloaded the DLC I have onto my friend's hard drive. The songs actually downloaded to his hard drive but they don't show up on his song list unless I'm signed in as well.

Shortly after I bought Rock Band my PS3 hard drive got wiped. I had several DLC packs that I needed to re-download from the store to that same PS3. It took some hunting in the store interface before I noticed a tab called "Download List" or something like that. When I went in there, I saw all the DLC I had bought under that PSN ID. I was then able to re-download it to my system with no issues.

Now, I'm about to try downloading it to my friend's PS3, either tonight or tomorrow night. My understanding is that I should be able to do so through the same interface while signed into the store with my PSN ID. This would then be the second PS3 I've used them on. I'm thinking this will work on what I've heard in this forum, as well as this page (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/11/15/obvious-ps3-tricks-you-may-have-forgotten-about/) which seems to imply a total of six PS3s:

8. Share your PS Store downloads on up to five other PS3's!

Well, I'll find out for sure in a day or so. As far as the OPs question though, just login under your PSN ID on your new PS3 when you get it and you should have everything there under the "Download List" tab.

That's good to know. I must just not have signed in or something. Taking over my hard drive is much easier than taking the entire xbox or having to re-download all those songs (I've pretty much downloaded every song available).

thanks for the info

you'd think you wouldn't be able to but all you have to do is copy the files. It is the nazi box (I use more than my PS3) and sony wants you to have fun.

i can confirm that you can redownload dlc onto another ps3. a friend bought a couple dlc tracks, and when he came over we wanted to play them, but i did not purchase any dlc. he had to sign into his own account on my ps3. then go into the store, and on the top right corner is "download list" or something like that. it shows you all the content (including demos) that you downloaded. click on the thing you want to redownload and do it. i dont remember if i saw a 5 download limit, but i know that's the norm for psn stuff. calling all cars was limited to five downloads.

Yes, it is the case, as long as your gamertag is signed into xbox live. That is, you need a network-connected XBox. If you have one, you can use the DLC on any XBox at all, anywhere, without limit. You could use 637,492 different XBoxes.

Exactly this. It is tied to your console or gamertag. You have to be signed into Xbox Live, not just your Gamertag.

For instance. I downloaded all the original stuff on my old Xbox and then it broke. I sent it in and they replaced it with a different one. Then I downloaded more stuff. It all works at home when I am logged into Xbox Live. I take the console to work, where I have no internet and thusly no Xbox Live. All the new stuff is there, all the old stuff is not.

In conclusion, it is tied primarily to the CONSOLE you BOUGHT it with.

Took my hard drive with all the DLC to a friend's house last night and got it working. You have to "recover gamertag" and get all signed in as you for this to work. That is what I did wrong last time I tried....you have to be logged in as the gamertag that downloaded the content.

At least I don't have to keep unplugging/plugging my xbox now. I can just grab the HD and go. It does take about 5 minutes to recover my gamertag though.

I am in the same boat as you... Does anyone know why it is like this??
I feel I paid for the DLC, I should be able to play it either on or off Xbox live.
