So this Christmas I got a couple of singles by these bands and decided to review them each in one two-part review! Both bands are newer visual-kei bands who have formed as early as 2008 and don't have any full albums yet.

Artist: ALSDEAD
Album: PARADOX (single)
Release: 10/7/2009
Genre: Metal, Visual-Kei, Rock
Label: A heretic sound music

First we have the band ALSDEAD with their third single, PARADOX. ALSDEAD originally started as DICE&JOKER but changed the bass player and then became ALSDEAD. The members consist of Maki (V), Shin (G), Reito (B), Setsua (D).

PARADOX starts off with the song A_DUST. It starts with grungy guitars and clean vocals. Then uses some screaming vocals for the chorus. The bass is pretty good throughout the song. Especially from the bridge through the chorus. The chorus, by the way, is very catchy. The track ends with fading synth. It's a great kick-start for the CD.

The second song is the title track, PARADOX. It starts with some sweet guitar and drum work. This song has a good variety of vocals in it too. Actually, it has a good variety of everything. It also has some synth in the middle that takes away from the craziness... then breaks back into it. This would be a good song to introduce your friends to the band with.

The single ends with CYNICAL(NONAIRANBU). This is the heaviest of the lot. Similar to the previous song, this track has a good opening with guitar and drums. Some nice growling vocals too. A good headbanger I'd say. I also like the bassline in this song. After the chorus there is a thrashing guitar solo that sounds sick.

In the end, this single gets a 4.5/5. The songs get heavier as the CD continues. Each song has been a favorite of mine at one point or another. I just feel that some of the songs use the same formula. Heavy guitars with clean vocals for the main riff and screaming vocals for the chorus (or visa-versa). It works though.

Artist: NightingeiL
Album: Nibui Oto (single)
Release: 3/25/2009
Genre: Visual-Kei, Rock, Alternative
Label: XXX Records

The next band is NightingeiL with their second single, Nibui Oto. The members are Kon (V), Kaie (G), Shouichi (G), Mukui (B), and Ayuki (D).

First song is outsider. We first hear someone breathing heavily and shuffling as if he was running through the rain. Then there's a scream and the instruments come in. The bridge reminds me of BUCK-TICK because of the melody of the vocals. After the chorus there's a squealing guitar solo, but it's short. A great opener overall (despite everything sounding negative).

Second is Migawari no Hito. This is my favorite track on the CD. It's hard, it's fast, and it's pretty catchy. Starts with a sweet guitar riff and a raspy whispered scream. Great drums, great bass, and fantastic guitar. The song just feels short when you get to the end though.

Last (but not least) is the track... Nibui Oto. Now, after the first two songs you might expect a six minute hard rock epic. Actually, this is the soothing song of the bunch. With soft guitar and vocals to start that get more emotional when the chorus comes along. It's an enchanting entrancing piece.

Overall, I'd give this a 4/5. Migawari no Hito is an awesome track (for me). Nibui Oto will grow on you the more you listen to it, as well as outsider. It's also good there's a variation between the songs.

Left is PARADOX, Right is Nibui Oto.
