View Full Version : Ten - Pearl Jam What's the Big Deal?!

I see people all the time claiming that the Pearl Jam album ,"Ten" is amazing. I bought it, listened through it a couple times, and I hated it. I liked 2 of the tracks, Alive and Even Flow, but that's it. Can someone tell me what the big deal about this album is?

There is no big deal over this album and posting a thread about it is pointless.

I'm just asking what you people see in this album. Why is it so critically aclaimed?

Because people like how it sounds? It was a huge part of the grunge movement in the early 90's.

I like the other Grunge albums from that time(Badmotorfinger, Nevermind, Dirt) But I've just never gotten into Pearl Jam. Mainly because of Eddie's voice.....

pearl jam is hardly a true grunge band so perhaps thats why their sound doesnt cater to your taste. in fact, of the main 4, id say nirvana is the only true grunge band, with soundgarden and AIC being alternative metal. personally, i think ten is a fantastic album, but its definitely much different musically to the other records u mentioned.

I loved it. Along with a *few* other people in the world.
Why? Because I like the songs.

Eddie has an amazing voice actually. Also people love it because it has well-crafted songs. From the ballads (Black) to the hard rockers(Even Flow, Porch, etc.) the album has it all.

No. First of all, grunge isn't even a real genre. Secondly, if you go back to the original grunge bands such as Gruntruck, Tad, and Mudhoney, they all have a heavier feel that Alice in Chains and Soundgarden have that Nirvana lacks (at least, beginning with Nevermind it lacked).
Ten is a brilliant album, my second favorite of the Big Four of grunge's debut into the mainstream (Nevermind, Dirt, Badmotorfinger, and Ten in case you were wondering). It's a pity that the OP doesn't like it, but not all of us can be as right as I am. :P

I don't know what's the "big" deal with the album but I can explain why I dig it a lot. I dig the songwriting quite a bit, the instrumental side of the album is tight and has some interesting things going between the bass and guitar. The energy I feel from this album is another plus towards it for me.

1. Find something the majority enjoys
2. Dislike it
3. Make a big deal over it
This process isn't as cool as you would think.

Ya so, OP is a fail. I doubt you've even heard the album considering the only two songs you like on it are their most famous singles, and even if you did listen to it a whopping 2 times, you obviously like Even Flow and Alive because you've heard them hundreds of times on the radio and the songs have grown on you. That would probably be the case with the rest of the album. Listen to it a few more times and give the songs a chance. My favourites on there are Deep, Jeremy, Once, and Release so listen to those specifically because they're amazing tracks.

trying to get into pearl jam now after never being into them is really hard, because creed sounds so much like them. creed ruined any chance of new pearl jam listeners of becoming fans. unless they liked creed.

Creed and Pearl Jam are nothing like each other, I don't know why people keep drawing that connection. Their vocalists are similar, and they're rock bands from the 90's, but that's basically where any real connection ends.

Let Eddie Vedder sing the national anthem, and then we can compare the two singers.

@Pwnz0r3d: There's nothing wrong with that. They're both amazing songs in their own right; I personally prefer Once over both of 'em, though.
@onemoedee: Hey Eddie, I'm proud of you and Imma let ya finish, but Chris Cornell is the best vocalist of all time, of ALL TIME.

You really need to grow some balls. All you listen to is indie and alternative rock. Anything that is slightly heavy is bad in your book.

He listens to punk rock, so your logic is flawed.

Anything slightly heavy other than punk rock, then. He still strikes me as your typical pretentious indie troll, not even bothering to listen to much of anything that strays from his narrow confines of what the term "good music" means.

well to be honest, if i were to listen to "music other than indie or alternative" it would definitely be something other and better than Pearl Jam

Just one of the best debut albums of all time and one of the best albums of the 90's period. Just because you didn't like it doesn't make it good. If I didn't like The Godfather (which I did absolutely love), that doesn't make it any less good.

This is really one of those LOLpinion type things. I love the album to death, but I can see why people wouldn't. Eddie's voice in particular is definately a love-it-or-hate-it type thing.

It's cool to dislike Pearl Jam right now, but their first three albums are still good. Ten is more of a singles album though, it has some filler and some of the instrumentation is boring, but it has some great songs. Jeremy is one of the best songs of the 90s.

I don't get it either, but I was never into anything close to grunge. Pearl Jam does nothing for me...at all.

Well, I became a teenager in the early 90's, so bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana really got my attention for how different the music was. It was something unique for my generation. That's why I feel early albums like this are so praised, as well as the songwriting. There are a lot of personal and social issues addressed in this album. "Alive" is really Eddie Vedder's childhood and "Jeremy" is also a true story from the headlines. All this was significant at the time and significant to my generation's lives. I can understand someone younger not feeling the same way. You are entitled to your opinion just like we are.
