Well, there were these threads for Guitar and Drums, so why not Bass?

For all you Bassaholics, discuss anything about the instrument here! ^__^

We should merge this with the guitar one, keep it simple.

And it is called bass guitar

I wish I kept with the bass now. I gave it up a few years ago so I can focus on guitar.

Bass is hard, I stink at it. Least I know lots of theory.

*looks at title of thread* What?

Exact opposite with me, I gave up guitar early to learn bass.

I wasn't in a band, I just prefer the sound of the bass over guitar.

I play a Squier P-Bass. ;)

Blue body, white pickguard, Rosewood fretboard.

I don't really play songs so much as I just pick it up and play whatever my mind thinks of at the time.

Which more than once has been the Imperial March.

I use a Geddy Lee signature Jazz Bass(maple neck and incredible action=love). I play mostly thru a small swr working man's 80 watt combo amp, then I also have a wonderful swr 400 watt head and 4x10 speaker cab for it(I save that for the serious gigging lol). I used to play just clean bass, but then Cliff Burton inspired me to use a bass fuzz, then Brian Gibson inspired me to use more effects like a whammy pedal, delay pedlal, and even a phaser pedal. I have been playing for about 6 years now and I only took lessons when I first started out. I didn't care much for music theory, it bored me to sleep.

This is my current set up:

G.L. Bass
Electro Harmonix Bass Fuzz
Boss Phaser
Digitech Whammy
Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah
Boss Reverb/delay pedal
80 Watt Swr Working man combo amp

I may even try some different positions for the chain, but for now it's alright. I even made my own board.

I prefer a clean sound with a pick (I prefer the crisp sound that a pick adds), but I put on a fuzz every once in a while and use my fingers.

Complete opposite here. I tried using a pick once, and never went back, I'm too used to it now. Started off only playing with a pick sometimes, but now I love it :)

Yeah do you want to merge with my real guitar thread? Some people have been posting bass stuff in my real guitar thread want to do it?

Quick question,
I've always wondered can you stil slap if you use a pick? Or does it mess you up?

I think you can but you gotta be the master with your fingers or something.

Probably my all time favorite right now is Will Kubley of Passafire. They are relatively unknown but the guy can play, I even got a chance to talk to him for a bit before a show.

The song kilo is a pretty good example of his work, especially towards the end, just an awesome performance :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3g7VnDwumk

When I listen to that album I am just amazed that all of that is not studio trickery, it's really played that way live, amazing.

I met Will Lee last week (saw the Rob Mathes christmas concert, and my friend's mom got us backstage). What an amazing bassist, I just love his technique.

Heres a really cool Brazilian bassist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ryy5Z3_ku8

I used to use a pick when I played bass, now I use my fingers as I find them easier to play chords with, which are more of intervals than actually triads. So I could play octaves, 5ths, 4ths, 10ths, Tritones, 9ths, and 6ths.

I bought a real bass guitar and amp once. :)

I sold it months ago and bought a Mad Catz bass controller for Rock Band at Christmas. :D

It was The Who that got me into rock music in general, so you can probably guess which bassist I idolize the most. :D

Leon Wilkeson ("The Mad Hatter") is also a favorite (though Ed King's bassline for Simple Man is easily the greatest Skynyrd track). ;)

I use a Harmony Bass that my Preacher gave to me. In my 15 years of going to that Church, I had only seen him use it once lol. I switch back and forth between Fingerstyle and pick. I managed to learn Seek and Destroy - Metallica by ear.

Ah cool, I was waiting for this thread to pop up. I got my start two years ago with a Fender Squire Jazz and Fender Rumble 15, essentially a starter kit. I got a teacher a year after I got my equipment and I've gotten dramatically better since that time. Recently I got a 5 string Warwick Corvette and Peavey Max 115 thanks to my incredibly awesome parents.

When I started out I used tabs or tabulator books for about a year and a half. Now for the most part I strictly use my ear to figure out bass lines and melodies.
