First of all I heard that rockband now has a new model of the guitar.
when people's break EA sends them a new one that is different.

First:
How can you tell if the bundle has the newer guitar in it or if it is the old one?

Seccond:
Is the bundle even shipping with the newer guitar?

Third:
Is there really a newer guitar?

I can tell you this. I got the game on launch for ps3. After playing for a short time, I noticed that the whammy bar would work intermittently. It would work mechanically but not bend the notes onscreen. I got a replacement shipped to me promptly right before Thanksgiving. It appeared to be like my original. Then two days before Xmas my guitar broke again. This time the whammy bar was mechanically broke. It quit rebounding. Now I am waiting on my new one. I am very impressed with the customer service I must say.

1. Unscrew the back and look.
2. No idea
3. Yes, and I hear it's much more responsive. Hopefully when my replacement comes in, it'll be a magnet one, since the metal contact ones keep breaking.

If you do a quick search about the initial guitar release problems you will see several photos of what the first, second and third generation guitars look like.

I'm pretty sure my guitar is third gen as we've had no problems since we received it as a replacement. The first gen guitars had problems with the contact points that register the notes when you strum. EA changed the design to a more effective means of registering the notes. My only complaint is that the newer model has "clacky" buttons. This might be the best way to figure out what generation your guitar is. If the fret buttons sound "clacky", then you most likely have a newer generation guitar.

Sorry, My question really is whether I can tell from the outside of the bundle box whether it contains the new/fixed guitar and/or drum. For example, is there a range of serial numbers that would tell me this?

I haven't even bothered with EA. I started using my GHIII les Paul and haven't looked back. That is the best quality guitar I've played with so far. Beats the hell out of the Strat.
