What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Hey, TheObscure, I'm really happy for you, and I'm going to let you finish, but the Quarter Pounder with cheese, or as I've recently taken to call it, "Royal With Cheese", is the best fast food burger of all time. ALL TIME.

(Aside from respectable places that I would call "Diners" not "Fast-Food Places".)

Many OSs use GNU's coreutils. Note that although the FSF's intent was to come up with their own OS, and would prefer that Linux be called GNU/Linux, most Linux OS maintainers don't agree. If the FSF want's to make their own OS, then they should go for it, but they can't claim Linux as their own simply because Linux has pulled from their contributions.

If you want the truth, and not just FSF's side of the story, you'll have to read more than just gnu.org's web site.

There's a boxer in Peanuts?

The best burger, according to many of my friends, is Blimpie Burger in Ann Arbor. They say that the grease just runs down your arms as you bite into it. I've never tried it, but Blimpie Sub is pretty good which apparently isn't related.

Blackjack041277

Blimpie has found its niche as Subway for people who are too cool for Subway now that Subway has become the new McDonald's and people have grown tired of Jared. (While Quizno's in its attempt to rival Subway has become the new Burger King, I guess.)

Nupe, just Linux. Or really, I'll just say what distro I use. I've been on Arch since early 2008.
