View Full Version : Top 10 Games of the Decade

Inspired by the albums of the decade thread over in the album review section, what are your top ten games of this decade? You can pick any game you want, last gen, current gen, or pc. Doesn't necessarily have to be one game per year either.
I'd have to go with:
1. Deus Ex: The Conspiracy
2. Diablo 2
3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
4. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
5. Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
6. Brutal Legend
7. Indigo Prophecy
8. Dragon Age: Origins (I choose this over KOTOR because DA:O had far more replayabiity for me than KOTOR did)
9. Rock Band (tough choice for me between this and Guitar Hero 2)
10. Silent Hill 2
Tried to make a list of not all RPGs, very difficult since I love so many RPGs, but there it is. No Final Fantasy on my list is surprising since I'm a huge FF fan but I really didn't like X as much as other people did, and XII I just didn't like as much as these other games.

I applaud your addition of Xenosaga, even though it's probably not a game known by too many people. However, you lose points for no Oddworld games. ...Though, Oddworld games tend to be an acquired taste.
I could make a list, but I'd have to do research, because I can't think of any off the top of my head, really.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4
2. Final Fantasy X
3. Half Life 2
4. Mass Effect
5. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
6. Resident Evil 5
7. Rock Band 2
8. Modern Warfare 2
9. Kingdom Hearts II
10. GTA IV
Yep.

I'm waiting for the Psychonauts fans to come flame me.
EDIT: I wanted to include Omikron: The Nomad Soul or Fahrenheit but those both didn't have much replay value for beyond the spectacular first playthrough, so they fall just under top 10 for me.

Never played Psychonauts, never really appealed to me.
Eternal Sonata had an excellent battle system and come on, it all took place during a dying classical composer's fever dream, that's something that doens't happen... ever, in rpg games. Not to mention you can use the aformentioned composer to kick monster ass :p

My long-term memory isn't good enough for lists like this. I can barely remember what came out last year.

I know, I played it (full 1000/1000)
I did enjoy the battle system, but thought it was a forgettable story, and definitely not up there for me as far as top 10 of the decade would go.

8) Pokemon Diamond Version
9) Madden NFL 07

I had a bit of the same problem, although mine was because I played so many damn games these last ten years, it was hard to remember all the great ones, and I'm still tempted to change some of my choices.

I agree the story itself was meh, but I loved the concept of it all being in Chopin's head. The battle system was what really made the game shine in my eyes, I haven't enjoyed an real time battle system like this since Star Ocean: The Second Story.
I really want to put Valkyria Chronicles on my list, but I just don't know what to get rid of.

I'll post an attempt anyway, although I'm probably forgetting a ton of good games: These are ten games that I really enjoyed in the past 10 years:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Silent Hill 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Rock Band 2
Diablo 2
Heroes of Might and Magic V
Neverwinter Nights
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines

Yeah it was. I never finished it but my roommate's got it so I'll give it another shot maybe. I think I got just past the level with those drone planes, where things are exploding in the air and I just had to take them out one by one, it was so frustrating
It's just weird to be turning my head to watch the TV screen every time I turn around

Play it, anyways! You can get it cheap of the Xbox live marketplace. Even if the idea doesn't appeal to you, the game might be better than you think (and it is, oh so much!).
I can't remember this decade so well. Psychonauts and Brütal Legend get places by default. Mother 3 is up there as well. My 'popular pick' has to be Super Smash Bros Melee. Left 4 Dead (2) deserves a place, too. After that, I have no idea where to go.

No order, just series I remember enjoying.
Ace Combat (Loved 5, others were good too)
Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars!
Rock Band (Hmmm)
Left 4 Dead (Zombies!)
Tales of... (ToS was amazing)
Mario Sports Series (Sort of a cheat but Kart, Golf and Tennis were great on GCN and GBA)
Golden Sun (Amazing RPGs, can't wait for 3)
Advance Wars (Lost interest with DoR but still good)
Pokemon (Gold, Ruby and Platinum FTW!)
Ace Attorney (Objection! That was objectionable!)
Had to do series because I can barely even pick which game from each series is the best. Right now I'd say it goes:
Ace Combat 5
Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Rock Band 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Tales of Symphonia
Mario Gold Advance Tour
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
Pokemon Gold and Silver
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
EDIT: Radom pick of the decade is Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

I'll attempt to do a top 10 but I know I'll end up leaving out something vital.
In no particular order:
Bioshock
Rock Band 2
Assassin's Creed 2
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Red Faction Guerrilla
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Left 4 Dead (would say 2 but haven't played enough to judge)
Uncharted 2: Among Theives
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Plot isn't a big factor for me as far as flight simulators are concerned.
I thought it was pretty cool having a dogfight over DC. Far superior than the last mission in AC4, hated that one.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Metal Gear Solid 4

Ace Combat has evolved a lot over time.
and plot should be important to you in any type of game. Narrative is important. Also this teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxWGjJJnvao)rules in so many ways. The score really helps.

Another honorable mention for me has to go to Mafia. Great gameplay, great story, very atmospheric, fantastic soundtrack... for me, this was the game GTA was trying to be.
One major blemish is that annoying racing mission that my obsessive-compulsive tendencies forced me to play until I actually won it. Argh.

Portal would've been a contender had it been longer or had more replay value. Replay value is a big factor for me in determining a games worthiness to get on lists such as these. If it's only good for one go through, it had better have a damn good story or stellar gameplay.

Nope, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy by far. Followed closely by Diablo 2 :p Silly bear and bird thing don't hold a candle to intimidating ex-government agents in trenchcoats and sunglasses with nano-augmentations :D

Christ there are a lot of amazing games on those lists that I forgot about. I'm throwing up my hands and revising my list:
1: Deus Ex (My favorite game of all time)
2: Vampire Bloodlines (The game I have probably played from beginning to end more than any other)
3: Rock Band (Obviously or I wouldn't be at these boards, two of my top 3 favorite things in this world [games + music] combined in an amazing way)
4: A ton of other games that are too close to call and I'm not gonna try again.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
I did not like this game only because it was free, but because you actually needed the help of your team-mates. So far the only game where I liked being the medic, who tried to throw medic packs at everyone in hopes of leveling up.
Half-Life 2
I could play through the story again anytime.
Simcity 4
I have never had so much fun planning where to put a water tower.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Great SP campaign, even better multiplayer. Fun fact: created by Steven Spielberg, so if you have seen Saving Private Ryan, there's lots of deja vu moments.
Guitar Hero
Not the best but had a huge impact when it was released
Burnout 3: Takedown
A perfect driving game. Sorry Gran Turismo, but you don't allow me to crash into traffic.
That's all I can think of right now...

In my biased opinion in no particular order:
Virtua Fighter 4/VF4 Evolution
Valkyrie Profile*
Chrono Cross*
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3
Bioshock
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages
Rock Band/Rock Band 2
Burnout 3
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
*NA release dates
Honorable mentions:
Metroid Prime trilogy
Tekken 5
Final Fantasy IX
Metal Gear Solid 4
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Pokemon (Emerald, Diamond, Platinum)
Advance Wars
Fire Emblem (pretty much any of them)
I don't think I've overlooked any...:o

Better than 2? Interesting. 3 is what crushed any favor I had for Guitar Hero.
I liked GH III better than GH II, way better setlist imo.
Guitar Hero 3 has the best setlist of any music game ever, disregarding DLC.
Thank You! Aside from Rock Band 2 however.

Ah. There were so many things wrong with that game. The dropped passes were ridiculous. I would have picked 04. I'm actually curious as to why you chose that one. Not a flame.
However, I probably played that version of NCAA the most out of this decade.

I could careless about that stuff, when I play a music rhythm game, I expect to play great music (unless the game is ridiculously broken like Rock Revolution, even if RR did have a pretty impressive setlist).

GH3 had some great songs (especially Dead kennedys, Sonic Youth, and Slayer... 2 of which are in Rock Band now hahahaha!) but overall I thought GH2 had by far the best on disc setlist of any music game to date. Reverend Horton Heat, Dick Dale, Danzig, Rolling Stones, Heart, Butthole Surfers, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Primus, Rage Against the Machine, Jane's Addiction, The Pretenders... Jesus the list just goes on and on, I could probably name like 15 others without having to even think about it. Amazing, amazing setlist (if only they had all been masters instead of covers).
Edit: Oh, oh, and I didn't even mention bonus songs. The best Honest Bob song, the best Freezepop song, Bang Camaro, VAGIANT, That Handsome Devil, and so on and so on. Good god I wish I had a PS2 still so I could play this game again.

It's what convinced me to get a PS2 back in 2002.
A TM:B sequel would make me go out and buy a PS3, they actually semi-announced one a few years ago but there's been no info about it since.
Actually now that I think about it if a Dark Cloud 3 was announced I'd probably run out and buy one too... Such an underrated series.

1. Jade Empire (Just loved this game from start to finish. Fantastic. Every time I see sequel rumors get debunked I get pissed))
2. Tales of Symphonia (Seriously I've never had as much fun doing random battles, and the characters were all quite awesome and likeable)
3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (750 hours across 8 characters...)
4. Brutal Legend (Amazing first playthrough. Coolest visuals, awesome characters, and... Metal. :))
5. Final Fantasy X (Beat it 3 times)
6. Diablo 2 (So many hours lost to this game!)
7. Timesplitter's 2 (My first multiplayer experience. Unlocked every character (Still played as Monkey though) and this game caused a new game around the playground, virus tag)
8. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Only fighting game of last gen I liked)
9. NBA Street Vol. 2 (So much fun)

Blame Lucasarts, not Obsidian. They wanted the game done in time for Christmas when if they had more time it would have been far better. Look at how much was cut (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cut_content_from_Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Rep ublic_II:_The_Sith_Lords)!
