Other people helped the man capture the crooks until cops arrived to arrest the bandits.

Someone tried doing that in Toronto. The store clerk chased the guy down and pinned him on the ground. A couple days later the clerk was charged with kidnapping and assault.

Why would something be missing? If you hold someone against their will it's called kidnapping. The police are the only ones allowed to do that.
