View Full Version : I keep losing my multiplier on the drums!?!?!

I got Rock Band for christmas yesterday and have been playing it for hours. When playing on the yellow and blue pads during hi-hat/ride cymbal parts, it seems I lose my multiplier when I know I am playing correctly. The game was bought on 11/20 and the date on the bottom is October 12th. Anyone else having these problems or any solutions? thanks

Take a song with a long intro into practice mode and slow it down to 50%. Test out your drums and see if they detect rolls and any other combinations you can think of. If something isn't pick up you can either send them back or try the penny mod.

There are 2 and only 2 solutions:
1) Perfect your timing and be sure you're actually hitting the notes on time.
or
2) Your drums might be faulty and not registering every hit. Contact EA and get them replaced.

Chances are those two pads are very sensitive, and you might occasionally get a double register from them. I bought two bundles, both dated in October, and one of my drum sets is like that with the same pads.
The best way to determine what's up with them is to plug em into the pc and use the Drumit program for windows that was created:

That's what I did with mine, and I could see occasionally on a normal beat the drum would register twice. It might also be worth watching this youtube vid to see if the symptoms are the same as his:

He ended up taping one or two of his pads down, which seemed to help the problem somehow. Maybe give this a shot.

Testing in Practice mode, as suggested, is an easy test that works.
I had the exact same situation as you... I thought my playing was off but then I tried my friend's drums and I wasn't missing a beat. I'm betting you have defective drums.

Also, I went to play Run to The Hills on expert, and on my hits on the red pad wouldn't all register. I'm an experienced drummer (Marching quads, jazz band, youth wind symphony) so I know the proper timing and such. I'm thinking of getting a whole new bundle because the guitar is terrible.

Yeah I would mate. If you get it replaced now you should get a bundle dated a lot later than October, where hopefully most of the problems have been ironed out.
Touch wood, anyway.

Was that when most of the issues were ironed out? I think my bundle was dated 11/10/07, and I haven't had ANY probs with the guitar, and just remote "flukes" with the drums...prob have 40+ hours on them.
But I still "knock wood" everytime I turn it on. Sort of like driving an Alfa Romeo Spider. Fun as hell, but you're just waiting for it to strand you on the side of the road.

Or maybe take advantage of the Calibration Option?

Could also be hitting to close to the edge of the pad. I've noticed that sometimes I start hitting towards the outside edge of the pad, partially catching on the rim (though it doesn't sound like it) and I don't have as good a response because the impact is enough. Watch the placement of your hits if possible.

I would say proberly faulty. I am a drummer in real life and have played professionally for years. I posted a video showing my hands and you can hear me hit the pad with the beat. Then you can hear the clicks saying I missed when I clearly hit the pad.
Some of these songs I played on a real set in cover bands. If you want to see the video it is the last link in my sig line. Flirtin with disaster. I am sending mine back to EA tomorrow.

My guitar seems very sticky and is hard to strum as well, does anyone know if the "newer" models of the guitar actually click like the GH2 controllers?

They do not click. That was one of the major complaints about the GH guitars, the clicky strumbars. I love that the Strat's strum doesn't click :)

God I hope not. Guitar strings don't click and neither should guitar controllers. (Also, to answer your question, no)
I also lose my multiplier on drums a lot. I hit red/yellow at the EXACT same time and one will not register. I find that if I hit them a fraction of a second apart I can get both more reliably. It will be RMA'd.

something you gotta watch out for two on some sets is that it seems the pedal is super sensitive. I know my friends set is like this. I can take my set and play all day and go play the same exact way using the same footing on his, and I'm breaking my multiplier.
This is not really directed at anyone in this thread, either..but I'm about tired of hearing "i'm a real drummer, I never miss" This game is not the same as playing real drums in that regard. If you're timing is slightly off on a hit in RB you can miss. No one will know the difference in real life because theres no "score" no "click" no "meter" nothing besides an ear.

...and also, the plastic pads on the RB controller have completely different (i.e. almost no) rebound from a real drum head, so the fact that you can 'roll' perfectly in real life doesn't mean you necessarily do on an RB controller. Not saying you don't, just that the one does not imply the other.

When people say they can play a friend's system and not have a problem, it could indicate a faulty drum set. But another explanation could be a difference in calibration (or the need for it). I only mention it in case you guys haven't considered this possibility. Different TVs and/or sound systems may need to be calibrated differently.

You see any strings on your game controller? Real guitars don't have green, red, yellow, blue and orange buttons too, but it doesn't mean they're going to get rid of them.
The new strum bar has proved to be a nightmare for almost all involved. I'd swap mine for one that clicks like a guitar hero controller in a heartbeat.

I don't see what the buttons have to do with the strum bar. The buttons represent the areas where one presses down on the strings on a real guitar. The second someone comes out with a way to better emulate a guitar's frets than the current color-button system, I'm all over that shiz. By "nightmare" I assume you mean people cheesed off that their GH skillz didn't transfer over immediately to RB without a change in technique for teh high scorez despite the better representation of the actual instrument by the RB controller.

A clicky strum bar implies that you have to let the strum bar all the way back up (letting it click a second time...the first being when you press down on it) before you can push down on it again. That sucks for when you're playing something very fast and repetitive.
With the non-clicky strum bar you can just release the strum bar a tiny bit and push it back down again. I think that, in this regard, you can play the song much more accurately.
