View Full Version : Saddest Video-Game Character Deaths

Much like the Favorite Video-Game Twists thread, only a different subject.

What do you think is the saddest video-game character death?

*Warning, this thread may contain spoilers, so please put "spoiler* around the sentence that contains the spoiler, or black it out.*

I think the saddest deaths are Commander Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Avery Johnson from Halo 3.

That was a dick move by Bungie. Johnson was one of the most badass characters... no he IS the most badass character in the Halo series. He's survived hell and back, and then he gets copped out by the freaking monitor. THE MONITOR. I've always disliked him, but ever since the end of Halo 3 he's been on the very bottom of my **** list.

That was kind of sad. I mean, she was *****ing about not being able to die throughout the entire game. But, then in the end she gets played by Ocelot/Liquid. That was pretty cold.

However, I felt pretty bad about two characters in the MGS series:

Emma and Sniper Wolf. I feel really bad for Otacon, man. Loses two of the only people that he really cared about. I'm surprised that guy didn't go emo and kill himself.

I'm not going to bother blacking it out because I doubt anyone else has actually played this game, but Reisha's death in Ar Tonelico II really hit me. It was an emotional peak in the story because she was just starting to reconcile with Luca (her daughter, and one of the main characters) but ended up sacrificing herself to save Luca.

Ghost and Roach from MW2 SP

General Shepherd shot Ghost in the head and shot Roach (which was you at the moment) around the stomach area with a magnum i think then he had his guys throw both you and Ghost into a little pit and pour gasoline on both of you and then lit you and Ghost with his cigar, pretty much burning you alive, luckly Ghost was already dead so he did not suffer from being burned alive

god when that happen i flipped him off,but at the end you get to kill him when your Soap so that was ok

I didn't play FFVII until long after the game came out, so it had been spoiled long before I played it. As a result, it didn't really affect me. It was more like, "yep, here is where it's going to happen," and "oh, so that's how it happens".

In Mass Effect, I had no problem sending Kaidan off to die. Apparently, in Biowareland, being interested in someone's background means that you want to sleep with them, so Kaidan ****-blocked me from blue alien sex. Kaidan deserved to die for that.

Not so sad but for KotOR's dark side ending telling Zaalbar to kill his best friend Mission. He's a Wookiee who owes you a life debt and she is a 16 year old girl who is insisting you are still a good person at heart (think Vader/Luke in VI) It was pretty awesome. And if you are DSF you get to kill Carth if you did the romance option with him. He comes back trying to use the power of love to bring you back to the light and you kill him for it. Those two make Visa Mar's death in II look plain.

I always feel bad killing the Big Daddies in Bioshock. They have a child-like innocence to them and the way the Little Sisters cry when they are killed always makes me feel guilty.

Another depressing death was Sergeant Paul Jackson in Modern Warfare. The game even forces you to play through the 1-2 excruciating minutes he suffers right before he dies, after which the screen goes white.

Final Fantasy X:Tidus and Auron, but mostly Auron. Also, I don't count the perfect ending in FFX-2 as cannon, so Tidus is dead to me.

Metal Gear Solid:The Boss's death and EVA's almost death in MGS3, and Emma's death in MGS2 (Never liked Emma, but I felt bad for Otacon).

Bioshock:Andrew Ryan.

Fallout 3:When your father dies.

Modern Warfare:When Sgt. Paul Jackson dies, Gaz gets headshot'd, and Griggs dies trying to save you.

World at War:When You die. lol

Megaman X:When Zero gets rocked by Vile. (He dies like 50,000 times every X game)

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X:Steve's death. I didn't like him too much, but Claire is just too hot to be unhappy.

And probably countless other old games.

I kind of hate that in RPGs. Killing off usable characters? Whaaa? There's one game where you get a new character, but not long after you have her on your party she becomes part of the main story and is unusable for two-thirds of the entire game. Not the same as killing, but still. Not a huge fan of losing a team mate. :(

The thing that made that choice less effective is that, by that point in the game, you've amassed this huge sum of money that you can't spend on anything. So when Roman starts going on and on about how you should take the money so he can start his business over, you're left thinking, "I have plenty of money for that, I just want to kill this clown for all the **** he's put us through."
