Apparently, saying that the hero of the movie is white makes it racist.
Also, "Indians (http://www.pixcellence.co.uk/assets/images/Indian-Wedding_4312.jpg)" (?)
It's Native American (http://api.ning.com/files/BarX8QwVjGBeoNUHlueQRP06vM53vxAzHlfvRCwHsIVP3QEfd8 xpmnoHuKZAH35ZKHiMvi8-BnA3Cao-8rDlgmyJlS-hmvgq/native_american_.jpg), Dr.Thisisracist.
Come on people. Just enjoy Avatar for it's good characteristics. Do you people not understand the whole moral of the story? Jesus.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's unintentionally racist.

...i dont understand how it could be racist. are all heroes supposed to not be white?
and the movie makes native americans look like a great culture they are. it makes white people look bad, if you look at it through a race-seeking eye.

It is racist, but only because people make it so
I thought it was pretty apparent where they got the avatar looks from, given the tribesman garb and braided hair and all that

I'm not saying it's racist, but their point seems to be :
Oh look...the people of color (Blue!) need the White man to save them! Where would they be without the White man!?
Or something to that effect.
How does this even affect anyones enjoyment of Avatar anyway? Let them think it's racist if they want. Whats it to you?

i think it's a mix of native american and african.
and historically, white people have treated both of those races like animals.
and i like characters that are made from Native American/African culture. They're awesome cultures.

The use of the term indian to discribe a native american is acceptable. And if you had read the article it is talking about the possible racism. Its a discussion piece on how "SOME detect subtext of racism in 'Avatar'"
There is nothing wrong with a movie creating such discussions.

The problem with that argument though is in order for it to be accurate you have to take all films into account and compare that against the current race ratios in the U.S.
There are a lot of films released with strong African American leads (Such as the upcoming Book of Eli)
So I don’t think you can say it’s disproportionate. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if when you factored in all minorities there was a higher percentage of films that feature that demographic as leads.
Ehfahq
01-11-2010, 05:59 PM
Or maybe they have an interesting point?
Exactly, it is interesting. Especailly when it compared to older hollywood movies:
""A segment of the audience is carrying in the back of its head some sense of movie history," said Bogle, author of "Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films."
Bogle stopped short, however, of calling the movie racist.
"It's a film with still a certain kind of distortion," he said. "It's a movie that hasn't yet freed itself of old Hollywood traditions, old formulas.""
I liked what the article brought up, even though I dont think the movie is outright racist.

Thank you.
That annoys the crap out of me. Kids are acting up in my class and a Native American teacher writes them up, and automatically it's "HEY! It's just because I'm white!!!" or "Just because I'm black".
And I'm like... Shut up. It happens with every race.

I hear you. I’m Cherokee (with Pawnee, Scottish, and French. My family got around.) And it seems as though other people are always telling me what I should be offended at.
They tried to change our high school mascot away from the Indian because it was offensive. The funny thing was no Native Americans were in the group that tried to do it. Fortunatly they failed.

People who want to see racism will see racism, it's as simple as that. If you really want to find hidden themes in things it's not hard. All you have to do is find some aspect of whatever movie, song, book, etc, that could be taken out of context to back up your theory. And if that doesn't work, you can always just make something up that isn't there and some people will probably still jump to your side and defend your point.
For example, it's just as easy to call the movie sexist because the hero is not a woman, or spaghettist because the hero is not an anthropomorphic pot of noodles.

And you will, because there's more of them.
Bearing in mind this is far from scientific, while my guess that the number may be higher is off, the numbers do show a statistical stability.
The U.S. population that claims to be white falls at around 75% - 80% (The number gets confusing depending if white/Hispanics are included)source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States)
This is a list of the films released this month in the U.S.. Of 18 films, 4 feature minorities as leads. This is around 20%,which coincides with the population total. source (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/2010/01/)
Of course any given month or time there will be more or less films with minority leads. But if you average them out, the numbers come pretty close to matching the population.

I think in the end where the marine guy says how does it feel to betray your own race? is what they're talking about.
They are saying that it would have been more obvious he was talking about humans if Sully was a different color.
Wait, the bad guy being racist makes the whole movie racist? Well then Hotel Rwanda is racist. Take that, Godwin's law.
