View Full Version : Simon Cowell leaves American Idol

American Idol fans, start preparing those goodbye tributes: Simon Cowell announced today that this year’s ninth season will be his last. The irascible judge told the nation’s TV critics in Pasadena, CA that he will team with Fox to launch a stateside version of his popular UK show The X Factor in fall 2011. “We did talk about me staying on both shows but when we looked at the practicalities of that, it was impossible,” Cowell told the press. “In my opinion, it’s like having a good player and a good football team. The two have to be okay together. I believe it’s not my show, but it’s still very close to me. We made sure when we did this, that I would be protected. I’m confident it will continue to be the No. 1 show. Everyone is committed to keeping it that way.”
Like Idol, X Factor is a televised talent search that pits contestants against one another and the prize is usually a recording contract. The UK version was responsible for the launch of Leona Lewis, among others. The show divides contestants into four categories — guys, girls, groups, and singers of all ages — and already airs in many countries. “It’s a big, big production,” said Cowell, who literally signed his contract with Fox at the press conference today. “There is no upper age limit on X Factor and groups are allowed to enter. We gave ourselves time to set it up. It gives us time to work out who the judging panel will be.
“I’m doing X Factor in America because I believe I can find someone incredibly talented through this process,” Cowell continued. “This country, thank God, has got thousands and thousands of people still waiting to be discovered. I want to find a star at the end, I genuinely do.”
Cowell said he was offered more money to stay on Idol but it wasn’t about the cash. “I felt like doing something different,” he said. “I want to leave Idol this year bigger and better than it’s ever been before. Having already done the auditions, it feels fresh, it feels relevant. I like the contestants this year. This final year for me feels different. I never would have wanted to walk out when the show was No. 21 in the ratings. You want to leave on a high. It’s been a fantastic time. We’re going to do something new. America needs a different type of show.”
As for Cowell’s replacement, the Fox suits said they have plenty of time to figure out how to make up for the huge void. “We are not going to find a Simon clone to do what he does because he is one of a kind,” said Peter Rice, Fox entertainment chairman. “The reason we are making the announcement in January is to give ourselves time and allow people to come forward. We were frankly surprised at the enthusiasm in replacing Paula. We have to make sure the chemistry is as good as it can be. So I don’t think we will rush into that.” As for Ellen DeGeneres’ quip to EW recently about her threatening to bolt if Cowell leaves, Rice deadpanned, “I think she was making a joke.”
Speaking of Abdul, Cowell did have some promising news about the ex-Idol judge: ”I adore Paula. Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity because I miss her. You’re gonna have to watch this space!”
All that's left is for Randy to also leave then all the original judges have left their own show. :p

I don't know how many more year(s) this show has left, but I'll be watching again this year.
There won't be another superstar like Adam Lambert me thinks on the show this season.
If Simon leaves, that would be a big hit to the show, but I think the end is approaching regardless.
Only time will tell, eh?

Simon's Opinion is the only opinion the people really care about. Now that Paula and her stoned self is gone, The new Judge(Who cares what her name is.) She pretty much ruined the show, and as for Randy...well, No one really knows what Randy says. It's all hidden underneath DAWG! and YO! Without Simon, less people will watch it, and (Hopefully) American Idol will be over.

Not that I'm a big fan of the show to begin with, but I'm really disappointed to see that they added Ellen to the lineup at all. I can't imagine her trying to criticize someone, with her "happy about everything" persona she's created. Plus, I'm not a fan of her cutesy yammering.
I imagine it will only get worse by having Simon leave. He's synonymous with the show, to me.

Umm, Daughtry's first album sold over 5 million. I think he qualifies.
I didn't mean after the show anyway. Adam's the best singer/performer that Idol ever had. He was no amateur during his tenure.
EDIT: Let me check that album sales statement first online. I think I heard them say 5 million on the AI rerun I watched yesterday.
EDIT 2: Wiki says 4 million. Also fastest selling rock debut in Soundscan history. He's a star.

Daughtry did pretty well as a band yeah.
My point was that Lambert is not going to be at that level.
The whole "oh look how different I am and btw I'm homosexual" thing works well within Idol but it's not enough to guarantee superstar status. That performance he did that caused so much controversy? I don't even care about that part, that song flat out sucks and his performance of it was horrible. Did you hear the vocals? MAN! That guy is terrible.

I don't understand... are you implying that creative artists don't deserve their fame? There is a rather huge difference between an artist who pours all their creative energy into their career and someone who has other people do it for them. And I'm not even referring to others writing their own material, otherwise I would be discounting the amazing talent at Motown. But everything.
Again, not knocking the people who like American Idol (though it is hard for me to talk about it without doing so )
Starfleet_Rambo

I mean it doesn't matter what avenue an artist uses to get their art out there or become discovered to get the help to find their direction in music.
Artists will be liked or not liked regardless of a show or taking over my radio (Nickelback).

It's all about perspective. Music is an art form, although it's also, very unfortunately, a business... and there will be those who are in it strictly for the business aspect. From a particular perspective, those who are not in the music business for the purpose to make creative music don't deserve their fame. But that's just one, slightly elitist stance... as long as an artists does what they enjoy, then I'm okay with that... I just don't know if I count rolling in money as "doing what they enjoy".

They aren't solely looking for talented singers. Rather, they're looking for an entire product package that can be marketed to the broadest possible audience.

I'll give you Daughtry...kinda.
Lambert is not a star, he's done nothing. His only claim to fame is having a really crap performance on live TV that offended some people. I'm betting he won't be a star in the future.
Katehrine McPhee is not a star either, though she's not bad to look at.
Jennifer Hudson is debatable, but her recognition is mostly from being in Dreamgirls. Not her success as an artist in the music industry.

The problem is that there is a wicked obvious double standard based on gender. Dudes who look... unconventional can do okay. Ruben Stuhoweveryouspellit, Clay Aiken, The one dude with the gray hair. But when was the last time there was a 300lb fat lady in the final 12 or whatever? Every female who make it even moderately far in that show is young and attractive, there are virtually no plain looking girls and definitely no ugly ones.
So you can say it's just a singing contest but evidence abounds that it is about more than that. They aren't just looking for singers, they are looking for top 40 pop artists, with all the trappings that go along with it.

My problem with the show is that it has become so formulaic and predictable. A few rounds of embarrassing auditions, some preliminary rounds, a few themed singing performance weeks, and then the finals.
It's the same treadmill again and again but with different performers.
topperharley
01-13-2010, 03:44 PM
My main problem with the show is that it's marketed at the people who mindlessly listen to the same generic Top 40 music that all the commercial radio station conglomerates play ad nauseum, so those are the types of singers that generally go far on that show. But the major record labels already shovel enough of that kind of music onto the pile already, so I don't see the need to have what amounts to a televised popularity contest to find one more every year.

I watch American Idol every year and I am not ashamed of it. I usually convince myself that I will just watch the auditions but I end up becoming partial to one or more of the contestants in the competition and watch it all the way to the finals.
I am kind of upset that Simon is leaving because his comments to some of the contestants are what gives the show most of its appeal and personality BUT I am willing to wait and see what direction the show will take after he leaves.
Also PANTS ON THE GROUND was absolutely hilarious.:p

I just heard about this pants on the ground crap on the radio this morning and I am already sick of it. I did love Simon's comments though. "You know, sadly, I can actually see that song being a hit."
I liked Pants on The Ground because it was an old dude making fun of the homeys style of dress. Dude had a point!

Yeah I don't disagree with his point but we are going to be hearing that goddamn song nonstop for the next week or two, I guarantee I am going to want to stab him in the face before it's all done.

Lamar Royal FTW.
Before the audition:
"I'm gonna go in there, take the critic 'cos I like constructive criticism."
After the auditions:
"f*** American Idol." "Mary J. Blige f*** can't sing". "who the f*** is that bit** Kara anyway?". "f*** 'em all".

I'm tolerant, I just hate it when TV and radio shove some annoying crap down our throats because it's "hilarious". And I can't turn it off because my coworker listens to a radio station all day long that just loves to play stuff like this over and over and over.

i just watched a 3 minute clip of this "pants on the ground" thing and i'm clueless as to how this would have been funny for more than a few minutes even 15-20 years ago when sagging pants were a big trend.

^ They're still a trend.
I missed AI on Tuesday. I wanted to watch it, instead I was playing 5 hours straight of Borderlands, just to complete the Mad Moxxi DLC.

Huh...something tells me the Fox execs will be screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" after this season. Meanwhile, I'll be at home, watching American Idol die.
Simon Cowell was what gave American Idol a lot of its fame, and now he's leaving the show. I bet Fox'll have a huge profit drop if Cowell's new show tanks and American Idol falls off the charts.
Idol won't fall off the charts because of Cowell leaves. People will still tune in to see all the bad auditions and the tweens and teens will always tune in no matter what.
