View Full Version : So I Was Kinda Bored With My Current Music Library...

And decided to go snooping around in the rest of my families' music library for bands that I like but haven't heard those albums.

So far I've come up with "Darkside of the Moon"-Pink Floyd, Tejas-ZZ Top, time's up-Living Colour, Anthology-Sly and the Family Stone, and Fresh Cream-Cream. Which one do you guys think I should listen to first and which ones should I just not bother with?

you've never heard Dark Side of the Moon before? It could be the most important music album ever made

Haven't heard Tejas, but the other three are worth a listen. Have you really never listened to Dark Side of the Moon before?

I've never listened to the entire album before. I've heard certain tracks, but I've never had the time to find and listen to it 'till now.

Oh I also found "Anthology" by Sly and the Family Stone, I should add that to the OP hehe.

Between Darkside of the Moon and Fresh Cream. I'm not too familiar with the Living Colour, and Tejas is pretty skippable.

Funny though, I did the same thing last week. Though I dug up Elton John, Billy Joel, Beach Boys and Gin Blossoms. My parents are more soft rock/oldies oriented.

All of them are worth listening. Dark Side of the Moon and Fresh Cream are two of my favorite albums ever.

I'm now embarrassed for not having listened to Dark Side Of The Moon before... Amazing... I'm going to listen to the rest tomorrow. Now I'm gonna do something else.

If you like "OK_COMPUTER" than you should try it. They have similar concepts.

i'll probably listen to The Flaming Lips cover of it before i listen to the original, in all honesty

Definantly give Sly & the Family Stone a shot... "There's A Riot Goin On" is my favorite funk/soul album ever... rivaled by perhaps only Maggot Brain...

I agree with Johnny Rotten when it comes to Pink Floyd

it's hard to say which band i prefer, but i definitely think the original DSotM is better (despite not being one of my favorite floyd records).

So you think they're actually quite good and pose as disliking them to further your punk image?

If you want to have a memorable impression by an album, it's always an bad idea to listen to a cover of the album. Go for the original. Cover versions are just for nostalgia with a fresh sound. You lose half of the feeling by not listening to the original in the first place.

Well, why go listen to a cover of something if you are expecting something from the original? In my honest opinion, covers (even cover albums) should be done in completely different ways and I actually prefer the Flaming Lips cover album, personally.

I do not enjoy Pink Floyd, generally.

yeah, bands don't cover albums everyday so when they attempt it i agree that they should take a different approach. otherwise you could just listen to the original version, if they sound so similar.

The only exception to this rule is pop-punk cover albums; The Vindictives, Screeching Weasel, etc. all covered a Ramones record back in the 90s. :p

I like the Sex Pistols, but I have to say, I think Johnny Rotten is more pretentious than everything he labels as pretentious.

Hey, when I imported the album on my PS3 it listed the last 2 tracks as just track 12 and 13, on the back of the album they're listed as "The Coffee Song" and "Wrapping Paper". Is this some sort of rare album version or something?

How will you know if you haven't listened to it? It seems like the type of thing you'd like, but I don't know. It was a joke, anyway :p

It takes a few listens. It's very purist blues-rock, as opposed to later Cream albums.

Although it doesn't help that I went to Fresh Cream right after Dark Side of the Moon, which is the most "complete" album I've ever listened to.

Pop in a copy of The Wizard Of Oz and play dark side of the moon if you want a creepy surprise! Yes, I realize I sound like a child molester lol.

I've heard about that, but never tried it... I will one of these days. Is it actually supposed to sync up exactly?

it's worth trying, but don't hype yourself for a big event, especially if you don't have any quality drugs in tow.

I'd have to be very bored. The two aren't the same length, either... would you start the album the second the actual film begins, or just after the opening credits?

it's been about ten years since i've done it so i forget exactly when, but you start it at a key scene towards the beginning.

You start DSotM on one of the lion roars. I believe it's the first or second. Once the album ends, you let it stay off, as it doesn't sync again.

way to generalize, the atmosphere of DSotM is what made the album stand out, and something i felt they still could have incorporated, not necessarily in the same way, but in some form, instead of playing what felt like half-assed attempts at playing the album rather than putting a new spin on it

I wouldn't call it "half-assed," nor is it really just an attempt at covering the album as it is. That wasn't the point. The album doesn't sound like covers of Pink Floyd as much as it does a Flaming Lips album in itself, which seems like a "new spin" to me.

i know it wasn't really half-assed, just saying that's how it sounded to me, it just felt like a really weak attempt at playing Pink Floyd when i listened, instead of a new idea, but then again, that is how i felt when i listened to it and is my opinion just adding the bold to keep from being ganged up on that i'm missing something due to different tastes

i'm not crazy about the DSotM redux either... it's not bad, but i consider it quite a bit weaker than the original and light years from the flaming lips' strongest work.
