View Full Version : Define Your Taste In 5 Albums

Rocket2Russia

Amazon.com had a thread like this today, and I was interested in seeing your answers. Do just as the title says: give five albums that define your taste in general. Not necessarily favorites or bests, but albums indicative of your taste.

Mine:

Brian Wilson - Smile [Rock]
Radiohead - The Bends [Alternative]
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine [Electronic]
OutKast - Stankonia [Hip-Hop]
Mastodon - Leviathan [Metal]

EDIT: That list is wack.

Butthole Surfers - Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac [Alternative/Noise]
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica [Experimental]
The Doors - The Doors [Rock]
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde [Folk]
Faust - Faust [Krautrock]

I totally thought of the idea for this thread a while back, but I never got around to posting it. :p

I don't know what I'd put on this list yet, though I can assure you, Odelay will be on it.

i guess i didn't pay much attention to genre, and just went for more specific aspects of the albums... man, i took pills.

I was just specifying for mine. It's no requirement. I was just using it to help me narrow it down to five.

Depeche Mode - "Some Great Reward" (Post-punk)
UnexpecT - "In A Flesh Aquarium" (???)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - "Texas Flood" (Blues)
Alanis Morissette - "Jagged Little Pill" (Pop/rock)
Daft Punk - "Discovery" (House)

Yep.

UnexpecT - "In A Flesh Aquarium" (???)

Progressive Metal and Avant-Metal are very common terms for 'em as much as I hate the latter term.

Progressive Metal and Avant-Metal are very common terms for 'em as much as I hate the latter term.

That's true, but I feel like UnexpecT incorporate too many different sounds to be considered progressive metal.

Can't say I am a fan of the avant-metal term, either.

Gowienczyk

incorporate too many different sounds to be considered progressive metal.

I don't think this is right, personally. Progressive Metal has so much broad range and progressive music in general has always been open to several ideas. I still think progressive metal works for Unexpect. Just because they don't follow Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater, Fates Warning or Symphony X doesn't void them of being progressive metal.

I was going to make a gag list containing Miley Cyrus, Hollywood Undead, brokeNCYDE, the Millionaires, and The Jonas Bros. but I was too lazy to look up album titles for them. Instead:

Epica - Design Your Universe (Symphonic Metal)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell (Indie)
Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster (Pop)
NIN - The Downward Spiral (Industrial)
Juli - Es Ist Juli (Neue Deutsche Welle)

Mega-Tallica

Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe (Melodic Death Metal)
Fates Warning - Disconnected (Progressive Metal)
Sevendust - Animosity (Nu-Metal) <--- debatable
Machine Head - The Blackening (Groove Metal)
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I (Classic Rock)

Those are my main genres that I listen to. And all of you may know, I don't venture much from the metal/hard rock type of music, but I've been recently trying to break out of that frame of mind.

The Cars - The Cars (New Wave)
16 Horsepower (I don't know what genre per say they'd cover (they're usually listed as alt country, but sound distinct from most other groups in that), but I'm a big fan of it)

Blind Guardian - Battalions Of Fear (Power/Speed Metal)
Death - Symbolic (Prog. Death Metal)
Anthrax - Spreading The Disease (Thrash Metal)

I couldn't tell you either but they are one excellent band. I saw them open for Morphine once...epic.

As I mainly listen to various rock and metal, I figured that I'd post five of my favorite albums that belong to neither category:
Funkadelic - Let's Take it to the Stage
Jurassic 5 - Power in Numbers
Lords of Acid - Our Little Secret
Tricky - Maxinquaye
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth N' Ashes

I initially had Morphine's "Yes" on the list but I suppose that is just rock with a saxophone...

thrashmetal's self-titled was cool, if only for that song that goes DO DO DO DO WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION

That said, my five would probably look like:

Steely Dan- Katy Lied (classic rock, jazz fusion)
Queensryche- Operation: Mindcrime (progressive metal)
Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation (classic alternative)
Cynic- Focus (technical death metal, jazz fusion)
Prince- Purple Rain (all things awesome)

Pretty much the only genre I don't listen to that much is country music(even some of that I don't mind). I don't think I can narrow down my range to just 5 albums:

3 Doors Down - The Better Life
Damone - Out Here All Night
Evanescence - Fallen
Fear Factory - Archetype
Godsmack - Godsmack
Green Day - Dookie
Machine Head - Through The Ashes Of Empires
Papa Roach - Lovehatetragedy
Pearl Jam - Ten
Psychostick- We Couldn't Think Of A Title

There are dozens of other albums/artists I could list but won't. I tried to get fairly diverse with this list, but it was a lot harder then I thought. Anybody want to help me narrow it down? Is it even possible?

You do realize it was just a sampling, right? Like I said, even ten albums isn't enough to encompass my tastes on the whole.

That being said, TB2 is better. There's more expressiveness overall, "Altered State" has actual interplay which makes it more interesting and fun than its TB1 equivalent, and that moment when I found out the announcements in "The Bell" were done by none other than Alan Rickman...
