View Full Version : Guitar Songs For An Intermediate Player

So, as you may understand from the title, I'm an intermediate-skill guitar player (real guitar, not RB), and I have been looking for some new songs to learn. I know the following songs if that gives you any idea of my skill/taste:

Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
Back In Black - AC/DC
Heart Of Gold - Neil Young
The Call Of Ktulu and Master Of Puppets - Metallica
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Come Together and Day Tripper - The Beatles

I also know bits and parts of songs like:
Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Iron Man - Black Sabbath
Breakin The Law - Judas Priest
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns n Roses

You get the picture. So if you guys could supply some songs that you think I might like, and possibly a link to some good TAB of that song, it would be greatly appreciated! If it wasn't clear enough, I like mostly classic and hard rock, and some metal. Bigger hits are better than deep cuts for me.

Thanks in advance for your help! :D

Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
I Will Dare - The Replacements
Day Tripper - The Beatles
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (solo is challenging)

The solo to Sweet Child O' Mine is a good test for intermediate players, it's rather easy, but that one little fast run can be tricky.

Ozzy Osbourne - "Bark At The Moon"
Ozzy Osbourne - "No More Tears" (very end of the solo can be challenging)
Black Sabbath - "Children Of The Grave"
Megadeth - "Symphony Of Destruction" (Marty Freidman solos are by no means easy)
Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
Metallica - "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"
Metallica - "Leper Messiah" (if you haven't practiced sweeps, the solo of this song is a good place to start)
Led Zeppelin - "Black Dog"
Guns N' Roses - "Paradise City"
AC/DC - "Hells Bells"
Slayer - "Raining Blood" (good song to practice tremolo picking and triplets)
Dream Theater - "Another Day" (don't be intimidated by Dream Theater, the solo is rather easy)

I practice parts of the songs above on a regular basis and they've helped me over the years. If you want a rather challenging song for your skill, give John Petrucci's "Glasgow Kiss" a shot. It has a lot of fun parts to play and the solo uses nearly all the different guitar techniques, including sweeps, tapping, and string skipping.

Alright, thanks you guys. I'll check at least some of these out for sure.

Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
I Will Dare - The Replacements
Day Tripper - The Beatles
Paranoid - Black Sabbath (solo is challenging)

I'll try Paranoid and Here Comes Your Man. I already know Day Tripper though :p.

Cool. Don't know if I've ever heard Like A Hurrcane, but I will check it out.

it's my favorite neil young tune, though i think it's actually best when neil plays it solo with an organ.

I'm listening to it right now, and I love it. But I just hope it isn't too complicated for me.

if so, give "old man" a shot... i'm a pretty shabby guitarist and i got it down.

Alright, I'll try that before I go for LAH. But do you know how long the studio version of Like A Hurricane is? Any videos on YouTube are usually live and around 8 minutes, so yeah.

But anyways, has anybody else got song suggestions for me?

the original studio version of LAH is 8 minutes and 20 seconds. it's from the album "american stars 'n bars" (which isn't a particularly good NY album, but damn that song is amazing).

Yeah, that's the one I'm listening to right now, and I think I get the gist of the song. It's awesome :D

I'd be willing to try In The Street, but Eruption? Honestly? I said intermediate, not virtuoso.

Eruption is actually not as hard as you think. If you can master the art of tremolo picking, Eruption is fairly easy. And the tapping part is a lot of fun to play (and is a good way to impress people;)).

I'm not that great at tremolo picking yet... does anybody know any good songs to practice tremolo picking? And even tapping for that matter.

I play drums in a band, but I play guitar sometimes.

Rock And Roll - Led Zeppelin (Pretty easy, allthough the solo is really tough, but really fun.)

Helter Skelter - The Beatles (Super easy, but if you play it with feeling it's very fun. Even though the chords are easy you have to play with emotion to make it sound right.)

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (Can be tough, but it's extremely fun.)

Well, it kept me busy for about 10 minutes... now I guess I'm gonna have to learn the rest of those songs because I love the intros!

Purple Haze is actually pretty easy and really fun to play. Hey Joe is a really easy Hendrix tune to learn as well.

Never really considered any of Jimi's songs to be within my range of ability, but I guess all I can do is try!

Oh yes. THAT one. I have nightmares from that one.

I'm working on Alive myself, currently. You could always try that one.

(Looking from the lists given, I'm in the same skill level as you, so we're probably going to benefit from the same songs.)

If you like some instrumentals, Always With Me, Always With You is good.

Some Santana is good too: Black Magic Woman, etc.

Alright! Looks like more than one person can benefit from this thread! I've been considering Black Magic Woman, so maybe I'll try it next.

**UPDATE** - I started working on Love Me Two Times yesterday, and have already got the intro, pre-chorus, and most of the chorus down! It's a really fun and good song for intermediates like myself, so lots of thanks to TheChangling who suggested it to me! :D
