View Full Version : "Stuttering" glitch during RB2, TB:RB gameplay?

In both Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band, whether playing DLC or disc songs, there seems to be a small chance (I'd say less than 10%) of the game briefly stuttering in the middle of a song before resuming normal play again.
More specifically, the game hangs and the visuals pause for a second or so and the audio "skips" before correcting itself.
As I said, it does seem to happen infrequently enough that I haven't bothered posting about it until now (I've had RB2 for over a year now). But I think it's starting to happen more often... I was playing a song online with someone else earlier tonight and it skipped twice during the same song, with about 50 seconds of playtime in between the skips.
I can't think of any other game that freezes/skips so often, but then again, I play Rock Band 2 more than any other game.
I play on a small Magnavox HDTV and an 80 GB SKU PS3 -- although the hard drive has been upgraded to 160 GB, I seem to remember the skipping happening prior to the upgrade (but perhaps not as frequently?)
Having searched for similar threads, I've found several topics that seem to suggest similar problems (1 (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35270), 2 (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173266), 3 (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167797), 4 (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21172), 5 (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98864)) but none of them share the same diagnosis or fix. If anyone thinks they know what's going on and if/how I can correct it, I'd really appreciate it.

In your specific case, is it happening to both on-disc and downloadable content? Or just one of the two?
If it's just on-disc songs, there may be something wrong / about to be something wrong with your Blu-ray drive. Do you get issues when playing other games as well?
If it's DLC only, then there may be something wrong with the hard drive you installed.
If it's happening to both, then I have no idea. I've never had any such issues on either my 60GB PS3, or the 120GB (replaced with 320GB) PS3 Slim I own.

hmm...this might not be a hardware problem so much as a problem with your internet connection.
I have experienced this on several occasions, and it was always right before I received some kind of PSN notification (Friend A is online, Friend B has sent you a message, etc.).
This happens whether I'm playing online with a band or (this is the part that confuses me) when I'm playing solo...not sure why internet hiccups would affect you when you're not playing in an online situation, but like I said it was always right before receiving some PSN-related notice.
I've had the problem on my original 60 GB PS3 and my current 80 GB PS3 and it has happened both during on-disc songs and DLC.

It's definitely both.
Do you get issues when playing other games as well?
Not that I'm aware of, no.

Thanks anyway.

I'm not sure if this is it, but I suppose I could try playing with the notifications turned off/offline and see if that makes a difference.
But for the record, I usually don't see PSN notifications following the skips/freezes (and I often get PSN notifications during gameplay without any problem at all), so I have a feeling that that's not the issue.
