View Full Version : Mayhem 2010 band list: weak!

Is it just me? 2009 had Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, and the best examples of the deathcore genre. This year has Korn and Rob Zombie? For real? Lamb of God and 5FDP are okay, but this definitely can't hold a candle to last year.

Yeah, it is terrible and it is a rather huge letdown from last year.

Rob Zombie and LOG seem to look like the only highlights. I've never thought much of Korn, and i seem to think 5FDP are...somewhat lame.

Pretty horrible line-up if you ask me. I wish HMX would sponsor Wacken Open Air instead.

My bad. here ya go.
Korn - Great nu-metal, but hardly "Mayhem". Have they made any good albums since 1999?
Rob Zombie - Again, we all loved Hellbilly Deluxe and White Zombie, but what's this electronica nonsense lately?
Lamb of God - Good band, I guess. I've never been huge on them, but they deserve to be here.
Five Finger Death Punch - Decent, for a band that got its named from Kill Bill. Good mosh pit stuff, could be fun.
Atreyu - Standard metalcore. Really nothing special.
Norma Jean - Christian metal DOES NOT WORK, folks. Aggression + Jesus = crap. Nothing against religious music, but metal's the wrong genre.
3 Inches of Blood - I like these guys, actually.
In This Moment - No idea.
Hatebreed - Hardcore legends, so they get a pass.
Chimaira - Talented genre-hoppers. Made a debut album in pure nu-metal, calling Slayer "dinosaurs", then did a 180 when nu-metal went out of style.
Shadows Fall - Again, a good band, if overrated in my mind.
Winds of Plague - Pretty dang good deathcore, to be honest.
So there ya go.
NOTE: in 2008 and 2009 there was a "Hot Topic" stage, and that's where bands like Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, and The Red Chord were. That's completely lacking this year. No HT stage at all.

Five Finger Death Punch - Mediocre
Atreyu - I'm not really sure what to think of them

Chimaira - Haven't listened to them much
Shadows Fall - So so

It's quite horrible, worst fest tour line up i have seen.
Korn - They had their big time back in the day, now they are just "that" band that no one really cares for any more.
Rob Zombie - As much a fan I am of all of his work, he really just needs to retire.
Lamb of God - Not a fan of anymore, but probably the best band on the bill.
Five Finger Death Punch - No.
Atreyu - Crap.
Norma Jean - Fail.
3 Inches of Blood - Kind of funny to see a "keep true metal alive" band on this bill.
In This Moment - Srsly? Do not care.
Hatebreed - Look at me with my bandanna.
Chimaira - They had their moment, now they are just "that band".
Shadows Fall - Like most Death Metal.. hear one song, you've practically heard them all.
Winds of Plague - Don't get me started.

My brother wants me to go with him to this. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Lamb of God, but I really don't want to put up with all the other **** for one band. Zombie is alright, but lately he's been getting so drunk before shows he just staggers around the stage and has the crowd sing for him.

lol. Well if you went over the top with it, say a 12ft platform, that would be ****ing cool. But you may as well just wear platform boots a'la KISS if you want to be taller. Or enlist a band of midgets to offset your stature.

Dude, I can't stand Cannibal Corpse. At all. Most of those bands I've YouTubed at one point or another and there are redeeming qualities for them, but not CC. I despise them.
While I may enjoy some of those bands music, I don't enjoy it enough to pay money to see them. Besides, that's too many bands that sound too similar for me to handle 80 hours of it.
About six years ago, I went and saw Superjoint Ritual at Harpo's and there were five other bands before them that all sounded the same. I didn't enjoy the show.

CC is either loved or hated. It's odd, no one's just lukewarm on them.
I guess you either love the genre and can differentiate between the various bands (to me, the bands I listed are all starkly different from one another) or it all sounds like a mush of blast beats and screaming. Me, I'm going to the Maryland Death Fest which is nothing but three days of grindcore and death metal.

Yeah, speed metal (or trash, if you want to get REALLY particular) is more my thing. Don't get me wrong, death metal has some killer riffs, but a lot of the time, it's all mashed together in a way that isn't appealing to me.
MisterMixelpix
01-22-2010, 06:59 PM
I think the thing is, most death is intentionally amelodic. Lots of scales and technicality, but it's not intended to have a "melody" in the way that thrash and speed metal do. I always point at Frantic Disembowelment by Cannibal Corpse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOb6JSQd-Qw
That riff is killer, but has no real melody to speak of. So some people are going to hear it and go "BRUTAAAAL" and others are going to go "well that didn't sound like anything but a mishmosh of notes."
