View Full Version : Does an Album/Song Being Overplayed Diminish How Much You Like It?

This post isn't meant to be confrontational at all, just an honest question that I'm honestly wondering about.

If an album is really overplayed, like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or OK Computer or Nevermind or Led Zeppelin IV, does it begin to diminish in value in your eyes?

Note that this isn't a thread to defend that you dislike OK Computer for different reasons, etc., it's to discuss whether or not overplaying can be a factor in liking an album less than another.

In my opinion, a song being overplayed can make it turn into background noise for me. For example, everything on Nevermind that's frequently played on the radio doesn't grab my attention anymore because I'm so used to it, but I don't dislike "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

not in my eyes, i still think Sgt. Peppers and IV are amazing albums

If I hear any song too much I will probably get sick of hearing it, whether it's myself or the radio that's responsible for the overplaying.

i wouldn't say it necessarily diminishes in value, though it will usually result in me listening to it less in my own free time and that could result in me thinking a bit less of the music in the long run.

of course albums like those mentioned in the OP have been a part of my life for a long time so i've got a pretty solid hold on how i feel about them without too much outside influence.

I notice actually that I'm listening to Counting Crows, so maybe it doesn't impinge on my enjoyment actually.

I just ripped the best of my parents had because I wasn't too bothered about getting the full discog.

if it's lacking "anna begins" you're totally missing out.

Then I'm missing out, though looking has directed my attention to some Coyote Shivers songs. What ever happened to him, I liked his stuff.

i don't listen to the radio so not really, sometimes i hear a Camera Obscura, Morrissey or Police song where i work and i freak out, but it doesn't ruin it.

also i can't listen to Muse anymore because they've become way to popular for me to like, i would become less hip if i still listened to them

I'm too tired to be sure if this is a joke, but I really hope it is.

When a band is played on the radio, that means that they are mainstream, which means I subsequently begin to hate them.

No, but how popular a particular album/song is does make me hate hearing people talk about it nonstop.

For me, it doesn't make a difference how many times I listen to an album, I will still enjoy it to a certain degree.

It's happened to me before, like with the nonstop requests for Hey Jude on the TB:RB forum wearing me out on that song. They have better songs, people

Radio? Once they release a track via any medium other than four-tracks, I call it quits.

I really do not listen to the radio because it does ruin music for me. Even Octane is bad. Small doses. Small doses. ;)

The radio I usually get exposed to against my will mostly plays stupid remixes of things (without even mentioning that they are remixes (Gee, I didn't know Kings of Leon had no guitarist, a bass player with one finger, and a drum machine), it onyl rarely seeps into me disliking the original.

my teacher taught me something important about the radio

he said

"the radio is just one large commercial, labels pay to have there artists on the radio, then once you here it, you are inclined to buy it, but they showed it too you first. therefore stripping the average radio listener of any freedom he/she has too chose what to listen too."

he's right.

not to mention the radio is filled to the brim with crap (on all stations)
