View Full Version : Do people in your community share your musical tastes?

Read the title. I personally know no one who knows anything non-mainstream (by mainstream, I mean REALLY mainstream.) I had to actually introduce my friends to bands such as The Pixies, NMH, The Smiths, Joy Division, the Velvet Underground, etc. The closest I've seen to people who know some degree of music is 2 people who were walking around school, one with a Joy Division shirt and one with a Dinosaur Jr. shirt (albeit it was Farm...)
Anyway, do people you know know as much about music as you do/share your tastes?

Full of people who call music any older than 6 weeks old "old".

Most of my friends just listen to mainstream music, some just listen to songs in RB, some people in Rock Band Club listen to some cool stuff like Husker Du Replacements, Pixies, etc. but they also listen to some ****ty bands, I see a few metalheads who wear death shirts, and there are a bunch of punks who mostly wear Casualties and Exploited shirts.
So kinda, but I don't tlak much with the people who do have decent music taste.
@Trident: My friends didn't know who Kurt Cobain was and thought he was "old."

My Best Friend likes some of the music I like, but also has some awful musical taste that I rip on her for all the time (secretly I don't mind some of it though).
My other best friends are mixed, they like the odd band that I do, but it's heavily informed by their own tastes, such as one guy who is really into his dad rock and singer-songwriters will like Old Crow Medicine Show, or another who I agree with on some artists but find that he likes too much novelty music or the wrong albums (prefering Dylan's early folk to the electric trilogy, for example).

I can relate, the one guy I know who listens to Husker Du prefers their punk material to their alt material. I don't see how that is possible.

I like this 'making' people like music. I am so guilty of this. Just today I sent the Shagg's album to a friend in the post to guilt them into listening to it.

Who are The Pixies?
Anyway, my best friend (loose term) is obsessed with Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa almost exclusively, and he probably has some of the best taste at my school, to give you a comparison.
There are two people I know of (both conveniently girls) who listen to the same music I do at my school, and one is a good friend for that reason.
Most people in my area (upper-middle to upper class area of town public school) are into metalcore, nu-metal, post-grunge and dadrock.

i don't let anyone have the same musical tastes as me, as soon as someone else has heard of a band, they are immediately crap, that's why you gotta stay on the ball and have a lot of lighter fluid and matches on hand, you search and search, find something you like, but then your friend walks in, and he hears it, so then he likes them, and you have to burn the album, because it's no longer the "in" thing for me, so, then i search more, but i find out someone else has bought that album, well, that's not for me, can't get that, it sucks then

Some of my friends share my taste in music but I generally have a different friend or group of friends for each type of music. I has one friend who is really into electronic music and the local DJ scene. I have a group of friends that are really into experimental music and jam bands, jazz, and blues. Then most of my other friends listen to a mixture of classic rock, modern indie stuff, some hip hop, or electronic music. Most of them don't actively search for music though.

Very rarely but you tend to find some people sneaking around listening to some good stuff.
There's a bar in town here that hosts tiny prog shows and it's fantastic. I saw Umbra and the Vulcan Siege not too long ago and it was one of the best mellotron I've ever seen in person. Also, one of the most talented guitarists I've seen in a long time, Andreas Kapsalis, played their with his Kapsalis Guitar Duo group.

Everyone I know listens to nothing but the mainstream rap/hip hop garbage. And if not that, then there's the small group of "metal" fans, but they don't like any good metal. All they listen to is August Burns Red, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Devil Wears Prada. I'm the only person I know that has some sort of musical range, but that's not much:p

Community wise, it's mostly the pop-culture hip-hop/dance stuff (which is Z103 here, which is our subsidiary of Virgin Radio, which may help some folks with hwat I'm trying to describe).
Or obscenely poor punk music, which is most of the local band scene.

It's funny, i used to be that guy who barely listened to anything past the doors or the rolling stones, and some of my friends got me interested in other stuff. Then my own tastes really developed, and now i'm the one into all the weird stuff no one has heard of. My best friend listens to a lot of what I like, and over the past few months just about everything I recommend him he ends up loving.
I'm also lucky because a lot of the people that I do know in the local music scene have similar tastes, but overall, I still got a lot of strange looks when playing stuff that's "eclectic and weird" such as The Pixies, Nick Cave or Sonic Youth. Good thing I've never put on my Naked City or Residents albums around those people, their heads would probably explode.

I have some friends at school who enjoy some of the stuff I listen to. I have one friend outside of school that enjoys great hardcore punk, but then also listens to the modern "mallcore" stuff and some other bands I'm not that big on (Vampire Weekend, for example).
Other than that, I suppose that my school has a more eclectic taste than most places. I couldn't really lump most people into one category.

I only have one friend that even consitently listens to music, and he likes The Killers, Green Day, Bon Jovi, ect... Most of the kids at the schoolyard are either into Disturbed/A Bullet For My Valentine or Pink Floyd/Metallica, though not so much in either group that they can name any of thier songs. I'm only into surface-indie stuff (Neutral Milk Hotel, Wilco, Sonic Youth..) in addition to my Neil Young obsession and dad-rock that doesn't get played on the radio, but I can't really talk about music with anybody I know.

There are two people here that do, as far as I know.
One of them I actually got to join this board, Kid-Charlemagne. He's a big fusion/classic rock/metal fan in whom I have got him into various artists(Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff, Isis, Queensryche, and UFO first come to mind), and he in turn has made me really appreciate Steely Dan(wonder where he came up with that name!) and Dire Straits. He and I do disagree a bit, especially since he's anti-ambience and anything counterculture, but besides that, we have some awesome taste and are great friends.
The other person is a girl that I admit I was into for a little. She's a big metalhead, being way into the Norway scene and has a clear and logical perspective on most of the scenes out there. Besides metal she also loves Joy Division, and I had plans to introduce her to Ameseours, along with other good things as such. What happened, you ask? She met the self-proclaimed MASTER OF MUPPETS. Now she can do whatever she wants.

Being as how I usually live in Military communities, I'd have to say no. It's such a diverse group of people from all over, so the tastes tend to be rather broad. One thing I have noticed however is that most are pretty accepting of other's tastes. You'd be surprised how often you see the metal heads and rap fans at local country nights and vice versa. :) I guess that's why I have a real problem with the "auto-insult" crowd here.
There are exceptions of course. Further, I tend to hang with an older, more mature crowd who have moved passed the "cool" stage of life and are more concerned with enjoying themselves rather than fitting in.

I don't know too many people with a really impressive range of taste, but I know a few that rival or surpass my own range. Right now, I can think up 3 people.

I live in a fairly small community, so there aren't really any groups of people with similar taste like you would find in a big city like the "metalhead group" or the "indie rock group" or whatever.
Most of my friends have completley opposite tastes. One of them loves alternative and experimental stuff. One of them loves almost any prog or metal he finds out about. One of them is the most hardcore Avenged Sevenfold fan you will ever meet. And the other guy appreciates anything that takes real talent (so he says) and likes a mixture of popular metal, classic rock and prog.
I'd say the guy who likes experimental stuff and the "prog-head" are the most open minded. I managed to get the former into several metal/prog bands that I never thought in a million years he'd like including Mastodon, Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Torche, Kylesa, Baroness and Between The Buried And Me. Similarly, I got the latter into a few bands also including Textures, Arch Enemy, Atheist, Gojira, Mastodon and others. He also got me ito Between the Buried And Me as well as Ayreon.
The other two guys, not so much. The one who likes a mixture of stuff is ok. I'll show him a song by a metal band like "Blut Im Auge" by Equilibrium and "Vacuity" by Gojira and he'll say he really likes it. He'll go home and download the entire discographies of those bands, but he'll really only listen to the song that I showed him. And the last one? Well he's way too close minded to even attempt to show new music too. He says doom metal is ****, and that any metal with screaming/growling in it is also **** (yet he likes Children of Bodom). I told him I liked "Visions" and he said I had something wrong with me. (He did introduce me to Nevermore). At least the former respects my appreciation of those style of vocals, though he can't really get into it himself apart from a few songs.
So yeah, that about covers the taste of my closest friends. We all like metal to a certain extent though, so yes, we do share musical tastes.

^ at least you have a couple open minded friends! I don't even bother trying to play them anything experimental, proggy, indie, or anything >.> it's pretty much Suicide Silence, or nothing with them.

Ugh, that band is terrible. I guess I should count myself lucky. I can at least deal with Avenged Sevenfold, despite how much that friend of mine talks about/plays them.
