Overdrive for Vocals?

Quck question...my wife and I enjoy playing Rock Band, but she's only gotten the overdrive for vocals to activate once in all the times we've played. We know you're just supposed to freestyle something into the mic when that section appears, but apparently doing something wrong. If anyone has any advice or tips, it would be greatly appreciated so we can actually stack up our multipliers. Thanks.

The in game tutorial does cover this, but essentially, once you have over half of your overdrive meter full, just shout out, or sing loudly anything during a freestyle section. It has to be loud in order to activate your overdrive. If you find it not working, you might want to check the sensitivity setting of your mic. I have never personally had an issue, but one thing I have found is that you have to anticipate the shorter freestyle sections, because by the time the game picks it up, the section is over, and if you wait until the section gets to the line it is too late to get it activated.
