This is hardly fair to make us choose... But I went with Megadeth due to them having made ONE more original release that I liked.
Garage Days were covers afterall...

Damn you Thrashmeatluk! You are going to make me agree with you. Though Megadeath is really good, but it's hard to beat welcome home (that is a creepy music video), Fade to black, wherever I may roam and Harvester of sorrows just to name a few.

I have quite a large hatred for Megadeth and I think Dave Mustaine is about as annoying as Fred Durst. Whereas I think (with the exception of St. Anger), Metallica are gods.

I'm gonna have to go with Metallica on this one. Dave Mustaine used to be in Metallica so therefore Metallica has at least had the best of both bands. lol.
I really just think Metallica is an overall better band. And as the votes show so far, I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Im going with Metallica. I say they are more daring in their music. Do you see Megadeth going into different genres such as Alternative Rock? [Load and Reload]
Also i dont think Megadeth would pull off anything as righteous as St Anger!

I didn't expect tallica to dominate this poll i voted for them, but who if you're a metal fan can honestly say they don't like rust in peace by megadeth? Its got to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time, and hanger 18 on GH2 was for me the best song.

I rarely listen to them. Duely to the fact I dont have any of their albums and don't really see myself buying any in the near future. Unless incredibly cheap

This Is A Guy Talking Outta His A**, Unlike Me anything With A Guitar, A Riff And A Solo Gets A thumbs Up From Me! Megadeth And Metallica Are 2 Great Bands Metallica Will Dominate the polls but Megadeth Will always Follow in the shadow of metallica, i personally Choose metallica but megadeth Were the more righteous Band To have agreed to harmonix to put their stuff on the game before metallica, metallica have chosen now to agree to put there stuff on the game because the game has become so huge! and is a great way to advertise their music, so i say megadeth for being righteous to have helped harmonix in the early days!

Ah, this statement is untrue! I showed you Metal Meltdown - Judas Priest one time and you shrugged it off! Has awesome beginning solo!. Although you like good solo's from unknown bands, but Priest and other big names have hard rocking solo's aswell

Metallica.
I can't stand Mustaine's voice.

This is a hard question.
On one hand, I only like 5 Metallica albums. (St. Anger, Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All)
On the other, I like... 4 Megadeth albums. (United Abominations, Rust in Peace, Killing is My Business... And Business is Good!, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?) Actually, Countdown to Extinction was alright... Make that 5.
I don't like Metallica because they're *******s who won't liscence their music to anything, and The Black Album and Load were pretty crappy.
I don't really like Mustaine's voice, but I've gotten used to it. And Marty Friedman is an awesome guitarist.
...Megadeth.

Megadeth... I can't listen to Metallica after the self titled album (which I liked). But Megadeth still puts out good albums... even though there were a few rough ones after Rust in Peace.

I chose Megadeath, never really liked Metallica (just not my cup of tea) but can appreciate that they are a good band.
Having said that, I am not exactly the worlds biggest Megadeath fan either, but the poll said one or t'other so I made a choice :)

I always though Megadeth to be the thinking man's Metallica.
I say Megadeth, because when Metallica started sucking, Megadeth was still decent. Just like now.
And no matter how awesome Master of Puppets is....theres something to Rust in Peace that just makes it special. Maybe because it starts out with one of the bands best songs ever...

megadeth hands down. not only is rust in peace my fav metal album of all time, but to me mustaine seems like the kind of guy who'd sit down and have a beer with you, telling great stories and being a good guy to hang with. james and lars (lars especially) seem like greedy hole-faces who'd make you pay $45 + gst to let you be in their mere presence (whereas i still think kirks the man...). thrashed metallica, sick of them. thrashed megadeth, still going strong.
plus where were metallica in little games called 'guitar hero' and 'guitar hero 2'? i bet a whopping $5 harmonix couldnt afford them, whereas the mustaine was only to happy to help! 'sure guys, would you like a cup of tea?'

I like both bands for different reasons, but I like Metallica a little better.
It seems that almost all of Megadeth's songs are about apocalypse and chaos, but Metallica has a variety, like anger, frustration, war, politics, angry saints, and... um... love.

What it means to sell out is that they tried to make their music more mainstream in order to make more money. Many people think they started to sell out with the black album, and Lars fighting against napster didnt help their image much either. I still love metallica and I would see them live if they came to washington any time.

Usually a band is called a sellout band after they garner great success. For example, people loved MCR. After they got popular through Myspace and the Black Parade album, they are now considered as sellouts by many of their fans.

This topic has got to be one of the greatest debates in metal. I seem to think I'm one of the few that feels I don't have to choose sides. I still listen to both bands frequently, and I chose NOT to vote for either band.
I got hooked on Metallica after hearing Puppets around '89 before Justice was released. I was a diehard Metallica fan, then happened to come across Rust in Peace in '90 before Metallica's Black album came out. I was then glued to both bands. They both went for more alternative-hard rock in the 90's with Load/Reload Youth/Cryptic, and both tried to test the waters with Risk and St. Anger. You can't say either band didn't try to be diverse and expand their sound.
Many considered Risk to be a major disappointment, and even Dave will admit that they tried an even more mainstream sound than Cryptic and didn't come out as he thought, which is why he titled it Risk in the first place - he was taking a risk with that 'soft' of an album. However, no matter how much of a letdown Risk was, there's no denying that St. Anger was the most disappointing album in the history of metal. For a band famed for fantastic guitar riffs and solos, great lyrics, and diverse drums, they suddenly decided "people don't want guitar solos" and made a punk-on-heavy-distortion-pedals album. Actually, that's slamming punk too much.. the album just plain sucked. Brain-dead lyrics with boring guitars and drums. It sounded like a high school garage band. (But maybe that's what they were going for.) They've had 4 years and a new album to reconnect with their fans isn't out. Dave fought back with The World Needs a Hero about 2 years after Risk, and followed with 2 more solid albums.
The St. Anger disaster, combined with their Napster battle - an atrocious PR move - didn't work too well in their favor. (Haircuts and makeup didn't help either.) Their lack of support for Guitar Hero also let down their fans, and YES Harmonix asked them and their publisher, and they wanted far too much money for a small developer to handle. Dave on the other hand gave us two fantastic guitar tracks - Symphony and Hanger 18.
Megadeth came back after Risk with 3 very good albums - definitely not up to their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th album level, but very close. Dave has done all he can to help fans get into the music, and Metallica has seemed to try to do the opposite. Metallica should have immediately worked on creating a back-to-the-roots albums to repair their image, but they decided to take a multi-year hiatus on new work.
Dave may have been a drunk pain in the ass when he got kicked out of Metallica, but you can't criticize being a drunk 21 year old kid when how many Metallica members have been through rehab in their 30's? Dave battled his own demons as well in the late 80's/early 90's. Both bands tried new looks - Dave tried the red goatee, and Lars wore eyeliner. Neither band has members that are saints so people need to stop complaining about Dave's time in Metallica. Honestly, Metallica should thank Dave - without many of his riffs, Kill'em All, most Ride the Lightning, and some Puppets songs would definitely not have been what they are today. Perhaps that's why I love older Metallica and most of the entire Megadeth collection. Dave's got better creativity for metal riffs than James/Kirk.
We shouldn't have to do an album comparison, but ultimately that's where it leads..
These albums are fairly equal.. with a slight edge to Metallica on all 3.
Master of Puppets.. >= Rust in Peace
Ride the Lightning.. >= Peace Sells
And Justice for All.. >= So Far, So Good.. So What
I've got to give Dave's debut a step above Metallica's, but he already had his hands all over Kill'em All, so it's hardly a fair comparison. Garage Days being all covers can't compete with Hidden Treasures.
Kill'em All.. < Killing is My Business
Garage Days < Hidden Treasures
Around '91, Megadeth breaks through..
Black Album =< Countdown to Extinction
Load < Youthanasia
Reload < Cryptic Writings
St. Anger < Risk
And now? Metallica has no answer yet for The World Needs a Hero, The System Has Failed, and United Abominations. It's hardly a debate on which band has been rocking hard the last 8 years. I really want Metallica to come out with a major kickass album in the likes of Puppets or Justice, but years of their attitude toward metal and their metal fans has me skeptical.

Metallica hasn't released anything worthwhile since ...And Justice. Between their crap releases consisting of cover songs, symphony collaborations, constantly trying to reinvent themselves (load/re-lead? st. anger??), and even a movie of them with a counselor/therapist, it amazes me that they still have the rabid fan-base they do. Even my friends have kept saying "I'm giving them one more chance to impress me" for 10 yrs! Why?! Move on..there is sooooo much better music out there to be listening to!
Anyways, Megadeth for me as far as this poll is concerned since i do like United Abomination but there is waaaay better thrash out there than these two bands are contributing the the scene. Has anybody heard the new Exodus album? That's what Metallica should've sounded like years ago.

metallica is definitely the better band.
but mustaine is still a great artist.
there's just something about mustaine that just screams @$$hole. (he was kicked out of metallica, and he makes member changes in megadeth over and over again because he can't play nice with the other children.)
I love Welcome Home, A Tout Le Monde, Of Mice And Men, Hangar 18, Symphony of Destruction, Holy Wars, etc.
I mean... Dave Mustaine is a brilliant artist.
But Metallica is 4 brilliant artists working as a machine.

Battery, Enter Sandman, Welcome Home, Master of Puppets, Orion, Ride the Lightning, Motorbreath, Etc...you get my point.
Megadeth
She-Wolf, In My Darkest Hour, Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Rust in Peace, Hangar 18. Peace Sells, A Tout Le Monde, Etc.

This is tough...Ive followed both bands careers from the begining. Ive seen them both live and have bought all thier albums. From a a career standpoint I would have to vote for megadeth. Dave has been a bigger contributor in the metal community and the progression of the genre to putting lesser known bands as a compilation bonus cd in their albums. Dave was also very outspoken when "Dimebad Darrell" was murdered and guest hosted headbangers ball to speak out.
Metallica is a great band and I love alot of their music. St Anger was just a mostrosity and a huge let down. The worst thing that band did was meet a guy named Bob Rock he totally commercialized the band and made them something thier not. Then they got on this "omg we have so many problems lets share them with the world" kick by making that stupid soap opera documentary "some kind of monster". Im so hoping thier new album kicks a**. To all who dont know teir 1st album wasnt originally name "kill 'em all" it was "Metal up your a**" so dammit stick it up our a"**ses already metaphorically speaking of course lol.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVEY ONE DAVE MUSTAINE IS A GOD. HETFIELD AND DAVES VOCALS WERE BOTH BAD IN THEIR FIRST ALBUMS, DAVE IN KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD AND JAMES IN kill em all. All of metallicas songs are way to long but mary friedman could kick kirks ass and nick menza would destroy lars ulrichs cheap drum beats over in every song. dont get me worng thie both great but Megadeth is a far better band and is in a different class all together.

For the Drums I go with Lars but on guitar I dont even have to say man Mustaine/Poland/Friedman **** every single one of them just owns.

Never hanged out with them (:( ) but i seen interviews and they are pretty cool dudes. They DONT charge you to sit with them, they are not pre-madonnas and if you chose Megadeth over them for that reason your an *******. One last thing, wasnt Mustaine kicked out of 'Tallica for be too violent on the drink? Hmmmm?
btw dave dont drink no more and if you watched the tallica vid some kind of monster you can see dave make lars cry like a bitc..................

Megadeth. Has this music-wise, fan-wise, Metallica.
Megadeth has been able to keep strong and didn't dissappoint their fans with everything after the 90's. It's as if James and Lars vowed to be *******s to their fans on albums with crap. After The Black Album, it went from some crap but made up for(Sandman, Unforgiven, W/e I Roam) to just awful trash. Metallica was great before Bob Rock(The Yoko Ono of metal) stepped in. They let him control the music and just ****ed up metal. Megdeth has sold out a few times but ****, at least they made up for it with albums afterward(United Abominations kicks major ass!). Youthanasia had a few decent tracks on it at least(A Tout Le Monde is all I got to say). Crptic Writings isn't a bad album in my opinion, it's different but, it's a good ablum that goes somewhere. Risk is just plain crap though. Metallica's stuff is really generic on most tracks. Megadeth goes somewhere in tracks like Blackmail The Universe and the Hangar 18 series. Dave seems like a nice guy when he isn't drunk. Lars however, seems like and *******. James is cool, and Kirk too. But, I jusdt gotta say, Friedman and Mustaine can kick Kirk's ass anyday when it comes to guitar and soloing.

Megadeth is great, I'll give them that, but Metallica has always been my favorite band, and always will be. Megadeth has 3 songs that I really like from them, and that would be Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls, and Holy Wars. They are all great, ecspecially Tornado of Souls epic solo. That solo is one of my favorites. Ever.
That being said, there are dozens of Metallica songs that I enjoy listening too.
Heres are my favorite 'Tallica songs:
Blackened
One
The Day That Never Comes (New Awesome Single for Metallica. They are back!)
No Remorse
Master of Puppets
Enter Sandman
The Call of Ktulu
The Ecstacy of Gold
Fade to Black
Anyways, I went with Metallica on this one (As you can see). However, I wanted to highly reccomend the new Metallica Hit: The Day That Never Comes. Its #4 on the USA Best selling song list (As of the date of this post). It was also released 2 days ago. It kicks ****ing ass. Rock on!

I have to disagree with you on the first point. But that's a matter of opinion.
Your second point is false. Mustaine only received writing credits on two albums, Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning.
Also, that's not necessarily their "better half", it's just your favorite half.

He didn't receive credits because they kicked him out of the band and somehow got the rights to it. He should have received the credits, but he never did. Most of the first four albums were his riffs.

I voted Megadeth. Even back in the 80's I prefered them over Metallica. Always liked both just liked Megadeth more.
I feel Mustaine is a better writer and better player than Kirk or James. I find Megadeth's music more interesting musically and lyrically. I think Megadeth has reamined more consistent with their catalog as well and has stayed closer to their roots musically.

I'm gonna have to go with Metallica on this one. Dave Mustaine used to be in Metallica so therefore Metallica has at least had the best of both bands. lol.
I really just think Metallica is an overall better band. And as the votes show so far, I'm not the only one who thinks that.
I would say the votes show that Megadeth is the better thrash band b/c I'm sure many Metallica fans that voted aren't even into thrash and voted for it b/c of the black album mostly.

I've never been able to get in to Megadeth. I'm not saying they're terrible or anything 'cause I'm not really knowledgable in their discography. I think for me personally, it's Mustaine's voice. I just... don't like him singing.
I won't say one band is better than another 'cause as most everyone knows that comes down to personal opinion, but Metallica's body of work is more enticing to me than Megadeth's.

This is an easy question - Megadeath.
I saw them play an acoustic show the week before The World Needs A Hero was released, to a crowd no more than 300 people. I could have spit in Dave's mouth I was so close. I still have not been to a better show!
To take their songs, and play them cleanly on acoustic guitars, and still be incredibly heavy was a sight to see for sure.

Megadeth has:
-More technical guitarists.
-Much better drummer.
-More consistency with their sound.
Metallica has:
-Better vocals, although this is all subjective.
-Better early bassist.
-Better writing, although this is subjective as well. Megadeth is much more "cut and dry" writing.
Megadeth is much faster. This helps in some songs, and hurts in others. For example, I greatly prefer "The Four Horseman" over "Mechanix".
I decided not to vote.

Megadeth 100%.
Megadeth does what Metallica does, only completely better. Not only that, but Megadeth stayed strong well into the 90s, unlike Metallica who faltered completely.
Also, if you've heard both of the bands live, you'd know instantly who the winner is. Megadeth's live sound has never once failed, while Hetfield struggles to keep his voice right, and Lars improvises every single fill.
Megadeth, however, in order to save time, plays each of their songs faster than their studio counterparts. Now if you've heard how fast their studio stuff is, it'd be pretty hard not to be impressed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omQl2UT-OFY
That's in 2007. I'd like to see Metallica do that, even in the 80s.
Feel I should mention that I do like Metallica a lot honestly, but nothing after Justice. However, I hate them live.

One of my favorite things about Megadeth is that Mustaines vocal range is the exact same as mine, which makes all of his songs so fun to sing along to. Not that easy to do those things to Rush songs.

I like Rust In Peace and Peace Sells But Who's buying but those are the only two albums i love from Megadeth. For Me and here's why (personal thought's):
BAND LINE-UP
Metallica has had one of the consistant Band line-ups with James,Kirk and Lars while they let Dave go, lost the BASS GOD Cliff, and let Jason go.
Megadeth had a group going strong for awhile but have made major changes more frequently...kinda losing some of their feeling. Metallica has had 7 members vs. 20 for Megadeth.
VS. NAPSTER
Metallica takes all the grief for the fallout of their fight with Napster. Well Metallica had every right to do what they did. Also, Metallica was the only band big enough (exception Zep,Beatles) that did step up, or could have stepped up. Metallica did all the dirty work, knew they'd lose some fans but every band whose songs were on Napster were damn pleased to see Metallica, band of the people doing what they dreamed they'd never have to do.

I offer these stats for use to compare without the use of well Metallica for this & Megadeth for that. I enjoy both bands, but without a doubt its Metallica all the way if I had to choose. I was shocked to see that Megadeth hasn't won a grammy yet. They lost once with "Trust" to Tool's "AEnema". They lost once with "Paranoid" vs. NIN's "Happieness is Slavery" while Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" also went down to. They lost once with "99 Ways to Die" vs. Soundgarden's "Spoonman". They lost once with "Angry Again" vs. Ozzy's "I dont want to change the world." They lost twice vs. Metallica with "Hanger 18" vs. "Metallica" & "Rust In Peace" vs. "Stone Cold Crazy." These were some of the Grammy losses for Megadeth that could have gone there way. I still can't believe they haven't won a Grammy...

I can't say I feel the exact same way, but I don't think Metallica was the bad guy during the whole Napster thing. I've always found it incredibly ironic that the same people who accuse Metallica of being "greedy" are the people who want to steal their music.
Of course, then it gets into the whole "music is about expression, not money", or "an artist should be thrilled that their music is being heard, not bought", though that's something I'd rather not get into.

You're entitled to your opinion, but awards are never a fair basis for judging a band's ability. Case in point, St. Anger debuted at #1 on the charts, despite being recognized as the band's worst by most of their fans. Now I'm not saying you can judge by majorities either, but that the only fair judge of how good a band is for you is your own opinion.
That said, they are both awesome. Megadeth is just more awesome in my opinion.

Megadeth 4 great albums (kib, peace sells, rip, countdown)
3 good albums (So far so good, Youthanasia, Cryptic)
3 decent albums ( world needs a hero, system, abominations)
Metallica
3 great albums (first 3)

Yea, I used the Stats Arguement to get the info out for someone who might not know about it.
Grammy's are a pretty nice award for a Band to get whether its for an Album, Song, Video...
Metallica has 7 to their name which is awesome for them, while I still can't believe Megadeth has zero because Dave does write some really good stuff. His influence is felt in Metallica's Kill 'em All & Ride The Lightning...Im sure these two Bands taught each other some really cool things that we the fans of course didn't get to see.

I've never actually liked Metallica. If I had to choose my favorite albums, it'd be Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets. I definitely 'liked' the early era better. The grudge I've always had against Metallica is because of, i think, over-repetitive verses, riffs, hooks, and styles. Later in their career (including the new single they put out) I believe they got much worse, and they are very much a bore to listen to.
I have to chose Megadeth because, IMO, they have many more strong songs and albums. From KIMB to Youthanasia they were pretty strong. Came back with The System Has Failed, which was a surprising recovery from the failure that is Risk. And with the latest album, UA, some songs were quite good. Megadeth still thrashes blazing solos, bass lines, and fast drum beats in some of their songs today (Sleepwalker, Washington Is Next!), which are very important to get the blood pumping. I feel an adrenaline rush with Megadeth's music that I have never gotten with Metallica, no matter how much I've tried.
But on the topic of thrash, you guys should check Violator and Evile(more than Thrasher). They are great thrash bands.

Mustaine writing credits can't be found on anything after Ride the Lightning, and his only significant writing occurred on Kill 'Em All.
Ginger Baker wrote a lot of the parts to Cream songs, but he's almost never credited with it, does that mean he never wrote it?
That's one of his biggest qualms with Cream was never getting the credits he deserved.

Is there any concrete proof that Dave wrote anything on MOP? I'm not denying it, I have just always heard that the most of the writing was done by Cliff, and all of the lyrics were done by James.

I really don't think Dave wrote that stuff, and there's no hard evidence to support it. Cliff was a classically trained pianist, and really did know music theory, so I see no reason to doubt that he wrote a majority of it. He thought a lot of theory to James too, thus resulting in AJFA (which still has some very obvious Cliff influences in the writing).

Megadeth is too silly for me on occasion. I find Metallica's music more complex.
You realize what you're saying, right?
Megadeth's music has been more complex since Killing Is My Business. The entire Peace Sells album is a pain in the ass to play on an instrument. Rust In Peace is nearly impossible to even keep up with.

You are severely discreditting Flemming Rasmussen, the producer for RTL, MOP, and AJFA. He is brilliant. Listen to Evile's Enter The Grave album ALSO produced by Flemming. The leader singer of Evile, Matt Drake's favorite band is Metallica and wanted the album to sound like it would be Metallica's 5th. It really sounds that way, instrumentally on so many levels.

Excerpt from an interview with Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan:
Q: What's the most insane thing you saw Mustaine do during the Gigantour?
A: This story is insane but not in the way you would expect. One day we were all in the catering area of this club, **** what was it, the one in Milwaukee, Eagles Ballroom? I think that's it. Well in the catering room there were all these collages on the walls with pictures of musicians on them. Right in the center of one there was a big picture of glory days James Hetfield. Like 1987 Hetfield with the white ESP explorer, roaring like a lion. Mustaine walks in and starts looking at all the collages, gets to that one, and just stares at the Hetfield picture for like 3 minutes. We're all like holy **** look look he's gonna have a ****ing freak out or a break down or something. Then he walks over to an open window, leans on the windowsill, and just stares out the window for 15-20 minutes. It was pretty intense. Just the **** that must have been going through his head. He was obviously affected. It was crazy just seeing 25 years of metal history colliding in that dude's head.

Wow, good poll.
For me, In terms of music skills Its Megadeth all the way. They are more talented players, and far better song writers, both lyrics & music.
But Its reasons like this poll that they aint got what they deserve In music, Because of the Mustaine Metallica rift since he was kicked out, he was always gonna be In the shadow of Metallica, and always compared.
I love both bands, but like I said, I do prefer Megadeth songs.
Mustaine = Prob best Rhythm Player In Metal
Friedman= Awesome Lead Guitar Player, They strugled to find a suitible replacment for years, but the new album shows they have there man :)

Megadeth. Dave Mustaine is more pissed off than anyone in Metallica ever was, and it's reasonable why he's so pissed. He got fired from Metallica, now one of the biggest heavy metal bands ever, and members of other bands have further fuelled his anger.
Granted, Metallica was awesome in the 80's. Every album from Kill 'Em All to ...And Justice For All is a masterwork. The 90's and 2000's were not too good to Metallica, however. They sold out. Granted, Megadeth did the same for a time with Cryptic Writings and Risk, but at least they made an amazing comeback with The World Needs A Hero. Death Magnetic was an okay return, but it BEGGED the production of Flemming Resmussen.
All in all, for an overlook of careers, I'd say Megadeth is far superior.

Metallica from Kill 'em All to ...AJFA is just epic wins, and they hit it on some songs from Metallica (Black Album) to St. Anger like My Friend of Misery and Enter Sandman. Metallica made kind of a comeback with Death Magnetic; The Day That Never Comes and The End of the Line are REALLY good.
I haven't listened to a ton of Megadeth though. My fear is that they're like Slayer (BLEH) but I don't really know to much.

I can safely say this doesn't pertain to my case, or that of any other true Metallica fan. The Black Album is good, but it's nothing compared to Metallica's earlier ablums. Fair, I have not paid any attention to Metallica's albums as of late so I do not really know what his voice sounds like now. When I talk about Metallica I am basically referring to Black album and earlier.

I kinda agree. James is losin' that voice. Death Magnetic kinda sucks. They should have put ...And Justice For All on Guitar Hero 3. But Megadeth does have better musicians. That's why Good Mourning/Black Friday is practically the hardest song on Rock Band. I've only beat it on Expert drums once before. I've beat all the Metallica tracks multiple times. Megadeth is getting over Metallica.

GM/BF isn't even Gar Samuelson's best work, that stuff lies on "Killing Is My Business... And Business is Good!"
For the record, I think James Hetfield's voice (post RTL) sounds extremely generic at many times. I also think that Megadeth is better in every single aspect sans a few things (such as an unstable line-up and they are worse lyrically[although I like humor, and lyrics are low priority in metal]). That's from a thrash fan standpoint.

Metallica writes better songs, therefore I give them the edge over Megadeth. Megadeth has better musicians
Agreed. I like the majority of Metallica's songs much more than Megadeth's, but Megadeth does have better musicians.
...James Hetfield has a marginally better singing voice than Dave Mustaine...
Also agreed. One thing I don't like about Megadeth is Mustaine's voice. It's okay, but Hetfield sounds better, imo.

Seconded.

That's funny, 'cause this thread has been up for almost 2 years. I guess we should get some new mods, huh?

Old Metallica > Old Megadeth
New Metallica < New Megadeth
This.

Little late but rust in peace > all. enough said. Metallica songs got so predictable, with their 10 min solos and use of wahahahhahahhah. Kind of got old. Also would like songs with a more technical side, which megadeth brings. And most def. new megadeth > new metallica, but it is also true for the old ones, you just have to get past the hype and overly use of material in the mainstream world. Come on really: holy wars, hangar 18, poison was the cure, five magics, tornado of souls... brutal tracks and more. Death Magnetic is mediocre at best.

I like Megadeth better than Metallica, but I respect Metallica. Megadeth just plays the metal I like, fast, heavy, and angry :)

Ok, so here we go. An overrated band versus an underrated band, by golly gee i wonder who will win?
I'm sorry Metallica just bores me to death with an average 7 minute song that has the same predictable solos by Kirk Hammet who people praise for some odd reason and he loves his wah-wah pedal(where would he be without it?). And to those who don't like Mustaine's voice, it's one of those things that grows on you. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me, when i first started listen to Metallica James' voice annoyed me. Now I will admit everything on Ride the Lightning and previous is pretty damn good and I listen to it quite often, but I'm a firm believer that Mustaine helped in the establishment of the band even though he was kicked out prior to the recording of Kill Em All.
All of Megadeth songs just have amazing riffage (not a word but whatever) I can't help but bang my head for example listen to Take No Prisoners, Rattlehead, Set the World Afire. Megadeth is a lot more consistent and every track is awesome. I also agree that Gar Samuelson is incredible on KIMB, he blows Lars out of the water, actually every Megadeth drummer blows Lars away, because he is not even that great of a drummer. And bassists holy crap Davbe Ellefson is the man, I say hes better than Cliff (that "bass solo" in anaesthesia was horrible and plus you can actually hear the bass in Megadeth songs). He has some pretty badass bass lines like in Bad Omen, Skull Beneath the Skin, Five Magics, Dawn Patrol.
Well there ya go, I'm getting off my soapbox now. Those are my reasons why Megadeth is better than Metallica regardless of record sales or popularity because if you base that on who is better, that is sad. Anyway metal forever \m/
P.S. New Megadeth album coming out this September, its going to blow Death Magentic out of the water! ;)

Im going with Metallica. I say they are more daring in their music. Do you see Megadeth going into different genres such as Alternative Rock? [Load and Reload]
Also i dont think Megadeth would pull off anything as righteous as St Anger!

Both bands are really great and are super talented but i have to say metallica because they have better songs and more creative ideas then megadeth. But thats just my opinion:)
