In Rock Band, I'm the Wolf, white make-up clad drummer for the superband MOOP.

In real life, though, I'm a grad student with some cursory knowledge and skills at lead guitar. My only prior knowledge of music theory before two years ago was a grade school class where we learned recorder. Being of the generation where music lessons got cut from school (this generation), I didn't have much opportunity to play an instrument, since no one else I knew played. I picked up an electric guitar two years ago and started learning. I quickly found out that rhythm wasn't one of my strengths, so I stopped learning chords and utilized my strength (logic) to learn keys and scales. Since then, my skills at lead have improved markedly. Now I started Rock Band and became the Wolf, most skillful drummer in the virtual world of rock.

...at least, I'm on my way to becoming that. For someone who plays melody almost exclusively, rhythm is like a whole different world. Not to nerd anyone out, but it's like Rock Lee in Naruto. You have a deficiency that you try to negate by becoming really great at something else, but it doesn't quite make up for being well-rounded. Since starting Rock Band a couple weeks ago, I've drummed through Deep Purple on Easy, which was quite an accomplishment for me, even though my video game skills can best be described as "breathtaking". The Wolf would be proud. Oddly enough, my rhythm practice has also improved my guitar skills in real life and my licks sound a lot more fluid.

So I now know a couple things- kids really need to be taught music in grade school (piano should be essential for theory) and rhythm and melody go together like Mario and Luigi.

Does anyone else play an instrument in real life like guitar and is having difficulties with drumming?

I play bass guitar, which is a rhythm instrument, so I didn't have much trouble playing the drums. I've never played real drums either.

But I can understand where you're coming from. When I play bass IRL, I am focused way more on the drummer and what he's doing as opposed to the guitarist(s) and what he's doing. So I already have the focus on rhythm and time keeping as opposed to melodies and lead playing. Sounds like you are the opposite.

Yea, me! I'm a bass (and some guitar) player in real life so you'd think I could hold a solid beat but watching those prompts fly down and keeping everything together is pretty hard for me. I'll keep trying though because I do feel it will help my real life playing. Plus, for a few years now I've wanted to take up the drums as both a challenge and to record some tunes. Right now I do lead and rhythm tracks and of course the bass tracks. It would be cool to mix in some simple drum patterns without a electronic loop. I'm hoping if I can master the game it might go a very small way toward keeping a somewhat solid beat on a real kit minus the highhats, cymbals and all the other pesky real stuff actual drummers deal with. :D

Yea, exactly. Since it's been years since I've jammed with a full band I never have a drummer behind me which exposes my weakness of keeping a solid beat. Much easier with a good drummer behind you.

I completely agree. I don't even go to practice unless my drummer is going to be there. Luckily for me, drumming is his life and he almost never skips practice.

Yeah, when I play lead, I just wait for a cue in the music rather than following a beat. Rhythm is hard!
