View Full Version : Refuse to play Guitar Hero?

I'm curious how many refuse to play Guitar:Hero games? I'm improving on my drumming with RockBand and I'm debating whether or not to even bother with G:H. The two concerns are:
1. Is it even worth learning the two color schemes. I'm thinking this may actually screw me up for both RB and GH because the color to pad recognition is almost automatic now for RB.
2. The game just simply isn't done as well as RB and therefore isn't worth using even though they have: Metallica, Hendrix, Muse ........
What are your thoughts. Do some of you play both just fine and find you can switch back and forth with success easily?
Thanks

i quit GH games after the smash hits release.
you said you are doing the drumming, but what system do you have? if a 360 and only have the RB drums, i do believe the road contracts down to 4 (plus the bass line) in GH. shouldn't be an issue for the color scheme.
i've found with GH:WT and RB2 on the Wii that the drumming is easier on GH, while the guitar is easier on RB.

Its not that I refuse to play them, its just that I refuse to pay 60$ for them. Just bought Smash Hits for 16$ on Amazon to be honest... Even though I know nothing can match my 400+ library on RB...

I have one GH, and never bought them again. Rock Band is just so much better in every way.
More DLC
The color scheme and feel of the game is really bright and obnoxious in GH
HMX can actually make a game without extreme over-charting

I have an XBox and use a Roland E-Drum set. So I'm real concerned about the color recognition issue.

I have not bought (since GH3) & will not buy ANY GH game, I am fully committed to RB. Most of this comes from GH's stupid business practices regarding guitar compatibility in the beginning. I also think their guitars feel like fisher price toys, I didn't like the way they kept pumping out games that you could not import and on and on. I think HMX is happy that I chose to buy over 300 songs since the first RB game I bought, I realize I am small potatoes to some of you who buy EVERY song that comes out tho...

I play both, I enjoy both.
Though I enjoy RB more.
GH5 however is pretty damn close in quality to RB2.
And this comes from someone who HATED GH3.
I guess I should say that I could not STAND the charting in Smash hits, and Van Halen was just a terrible throwback.
But GH5 is solid.
So is Band hero(gameplay wise).

I've usually been down with Harmonix all this time since their guitar hero days. When guitar hero 3 came out I was pretty disappointed, then rock band was released and I've loved it ever since. After playing rock band 2 and collecting DLC I wanted to give Guitar Hero World Tour a try because it had songs I loved that weren't out as DLC. I bought that game and didn't like it much the vocals is broken to the point where you can't get 100 % and you have to sing the EXACT pitch the game tells you to, just a bit above or below or not loud enough will cause you to miss. Drums was ok but I didn't like the bass line that scrolls down the note highway whenever you hit it it looks like its passing by and missing, when playing in rock band 2 it actually feels like I'm emulating drum playing but with GH I felt like I was playing pounding away on a piece of plastic. guitar and bass was fun though I'll give it that. World Tour was the only one I bought and I thought it was ok could have been way better but it isn't as polished as rock band. I have since tried smash hits and demos of gh5, van halen, band hero, and metallica
and it was the same (a little better on vocals though)
Overall, I'd say stay away from GH if your happy with rock band and the charts they make for songs. Some people do like GH and rock band though so try borrowing the game from a friend or if your on xbox 360 you can download the demos for the gh games.

If I'm at someone's house, and all they have is Guitar Hero, I'm all over that.
but if Rock Band is an option, I'm going for RB.
I like RB better, but rhythm games are still rhythm games.

I will play them but I just can't enjoy it. To me they characters just feel emotionless. Yes they look good but that doesn't make up for it. Those hammer-on sustains also annoy me, not because I can't hit them but because I find them stupid.
Also Rock Band marks the solos and that makes me feel special when playing them.

I recommend GH:WT GH:VH GH:Metallica
DO NOT BUY GH5!!!!!! IT IS GARBAGE!!!!
They do not support ANY of the bands on GH5 with DLC....plus they picked some of the crappiest songs you could find for the on disc set list. Awful.

I used to own all the GH games for Wii. (Not including BH) Now I only own:
GH3

I traded GH:A, WT, and 5 for Wii Points to Download Rust In Peace. IN YO FACE NEVER$OFT.

Musical tastes is subjective and shouldn't come into consideration when talking about if a music game is 'good' or not.
The play mechanics and gameplay options have vastly improved over say GH3.
So from that standpoint GH5 is a vastly superior game to GH3.
From a soundtrack perspective it would be very subjective.
For instance a Metallica fan would say that GHM was the best game in the series.
A non metallica fan would probably say it's the worst.

Agreed.
People always say "Guitar Hero drums are more realistic because they have cymbals!"
No. Guitar hero has 2 cymbals. 2 toms. Always, and forever, and nothing will change that. RB has 3 cymbals OR toms depending on context.

What kills me is the "fillers" on the GH drum charts. Where they want you to bang on the drums where thier shouldnt be drums. And since I want 5 stars I just bash the buttons on my kit to get some extra points.
They really dont make sense.

I think both are pretty good rhythm games. GH5 is probably the best in the series so far and I had a lot of fun playing it at a friend's place.
However, I'm pretty much devoted to RB2. It's about the same music-wise, but what keeps me hooked is the presentation. The fact I can pick and choose where I want to play in tour mode, being able to make and customize my own character, and the performance animations help make it more enjoyable.
Also, I don't like how you can only activate star power on GH drums by hitting a complex series of notes, rather than using a drum fill which actually gives you the option of activating or saving it.

I still dabbled in my GH series but when I switch back and forth I noticed more and more that the RB series is 1000x better.
The GH series tends to make my eyes hurt from all the ugliness.

What makes it worse is when you have a goober on the drums who just bash the hell out of them everytime that happens and totally drowns out the sound of the entire song.
I REALLY hate those stupid things.
Almost as much as I hate the guys that bash the drums at the beginning of RB songs(before the drum sections start). Totally drowns out the song you're playing and knocks your concentration out the window when you can't hear the guitar or bass part you're playing because of spazoid the drum beast.

Last GH title I bought (which I bought used so as to not give the company any of my money*) was World Tour. I got it mostly because it was fairly cheap used and had some decent songs that I wanted to play. But, the gameplay was horrible compared to RB titles and the graphics were so campy I couldn't stand to look at it** (the drummer doesn't even play along to the actual song like the RB titles do). Now I don't even forsee me giving Gamestop or some other store my money for a used GH game. I'll stick with my massive amount of DLC and TB:RB, both of which keep me happy.
*It's called brand loyalty.
**Note that those are my opinions and may not be the same as yours.

I purchased GH:WT when it came to me in an email for $14.12 through Amazon and couldn't pass it up. Been playing it for the past month to milk the achievements, but I really really miss Rock Band. I only play about once a week now and have been focusing only on GH. I mainly drum and use the RB2 kit, but the drums do feel a bit awkward at first, especially on Disco Beats as the cymbal/snare to not switch, but it's not too bad once you get used to it. I do perfer RB better and love the idea of a single disk being able to access all of your content. I don't necessarily hate GH:WT, but can't really see myself purchasing another game or snagging any DLC (Though I am so tempted to grab some Hendrix - Purple Haze was probably my favorite so far for drums)

I kinda like it. They're OK, kind of wish that they hadn't gone with the cel-shaded approach with the last one (doesn't work for everyone, Neversoft), but quite frankly Rock Band is better in pretty much every way. GH has exports, but that's basically it (and I'm assuming Harmonix is going to wise up to it's possibility for RB3).

RB for better long term investments, party fun (although GH5 might be the only competition, only drawback is its soundtrack), and solid gameplay.

I'm guessing they mean the five lane drum charts that are 'dumbed' down to the four lane for RB drums.
But I could be wrong on that.

I don't play them, but like any other game, its simply because I don't like it very much. Its likely easier not to play it because of the quality I see in Rock Band, and I very well may play it if Rock Band had never existed.

The last GH game that I bought (and will ever buy) was GHWT.
I'm strictly a drummer and I can't really explain why I don't like the
GH games but I'll try.
First, there's something different about the angle of the note highway.
Not sure what it is but something is different about it and after about
five minutes of playing I feel like I'm gonna have a seizure.
Second, I don't like the round gems for drum charts. Everything feels
bunched together and clustered which makes it hard to tell if I'm supposed
to hit say red and yellow or red followed by yellow - if that makes sense.
Third, I use an Ion kit but the standard RB1 & 2 kits are the same way with
the 5 note chart being condensed into 4 notes - which makes some songs
feel awkward to play.
And finally, I've noticed a difference in the way the track sounds in GH.
Everything sounds muffled - no matter how loud I turn it up.
Anyways, that my two cents.

GH just fails at trying to be the bigshot music game of the decade.
Although I tire of the constant bickering with GH and Harmonix, I still play some of their games, just as long as they don't freaking start copying Rockband more.
(Which they did with World Tour, in case you didn't know.)

I'm going to be "uncool" and agree with Toymachine here, I don't play GH as much as RB only due to the fact that RB has more DLC, I find them both fun to play, GHWT drum charts were horrible, and gimped really bad, but 5 and BH are pretty cool, and yes it is more fun to play with more note's, makes you use the cymbals more! It didn't take me long to get used to the extra note, and actually made me better at RB! Going back to four notes and bass was kind of boring for me, I would say at least rent it first, but yeah it is easy switching back and fourth, so go for it!

Back on topic, my reason is easy (and shared by a few here).
I'm at nearly 1,000 songs, so I'm way too invested to care what what's coming out of the GH camp.
I have played GH5, and it wasn't too bad. I did enjoy it.
One caveat; I'm not a fan of genre/band specific games, however, if GH comes out with a Country Hero, I'll be all over that. :)
