I figured, being from Vancouver and all it should be fitting to have a thread to discuss all aspects of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. I personally am super stoked for the opening ceremonies tomorrow which I have been so lucky to be able to attend!

What is everyone's take on the olympics?

Hell of a cost, I have to say.

Yeah I feel so privileged to have this happening in my hometown, it truly is a once in a life time experience. Indeed it is quite expensive. $499 to spend one day in the Molson Canadian Hockey House with free booze and food. You'd have to be wasted all day just to drink $500 worth of alcohol. Not to mention the cost of a Opening/Closing Ceremony or gold medal hockey game ticket is through the roof. Though there is a ton of free stuff happening all over the city. For me and most people in Vancouver it's basically gonna be a 2 week long party. Beer is the new water! :p

I've been waiting for these Olympics for a while. My family's been to Whistler a bunch of times, and I remember seeing a bunch of merchandise with "Whistler 2010" on them back in 2003-2005ish.

My brother is there to enjoy it all. I love that its gonna be around 10 degrees the whole Games. Nothing says Winter Olympics like spring weather.

As for the Games, I'm just hoping Canada doesn't humiliate ourselves and win something stupid like 10 medals, but I like our chances to win around 30. They've done a good job developping good athletes in many sports. Lets just hope they come through.

And for hockey, well, its obviously gold or we're all devastated. If we lose to Russia, I'm ok with that because they have so much skill, but please don't let it be the US, in the cruel reversal of 2002. They'd never let us live this one down, and well, I don't know if we ever could :(

Heh, we had a torch-carrier come into the school yesterday so the kids could all see the torch and touch it.

well they dont approve olympic events overnight. it takes years to get them accepted as legitimate events. it also helps that the x-games are held every year and dont exactly have an international committee who has to approve. at least theyre in now tho.

Seriously? that sucks, and seems like it would be extra work. How can they have tape delayed events? that means everything would be shown a day late :/ Ceremonies start at 5:45pm PST here, if your in the East just means you gotta stay up late.

Yeah it does, they couldn't even add in Women's Ski Jump into this year's olympics. Even though the Men have been doing it for a while now. The women took them to court and everything, still didn't get in.

I saw the clip, they showed it on TSN and its subsequently been banned by the IOC, and deservedly so. Its pretty horrifying to watch, I watched and thought there was no way he didn't die on contact. He was flying into that metal pilar. This track seems extremely dangerous, 3 crashes in just practice runs.

I thought overall it was a great performance, Hallelujah was amazing and to see 60,000 plus fans go crazy when Canada entered the stadium was awesome :D I just wish they would have sang the national anthem like an anthem instead of a song where every word is held for 10 seconds.

Love the Olympics. Big cheers for you friends to the North. Those that get to attend, I envy you. I remember back when I was a young lad and the Olympics were in Los Angeles. They held the kayaking events at Lake Casitas in Oak View were I lived. It was very exciting being around that atmosphere.
Opening ceremony was great. My heart goes out to the family and friends for Yesterdays tragedy.

it's really not that laughable. wayne never won a cup away from edmonton, and edmonton won a cup without wayne 2 seasons after he left with basically their same team.

the oilers minus gretzky > the penguins minus lemieux

theyre points per game over their careers are nearly the same.. many years after wayne was off edmonton mario won the scoring title and played less games. and nobody laid a finger on gretzky. it was like an unwritten rule, you dont hit gretzky. lemieux was a large man who was targetted and punished by the opposing teams. he suffered thru back injuries and surgerys, not to mention he was a cancer survivor. life threw a lot more knots in mario's life than it did wayne. gretzky also started his career in 1979, lemieux in 1988. gretzky had 9 extra years of playing against standup goaltenders to pad his stats and have the best years of his career.

Pretty awesome day overall here, Got to check out some of the live events and watched The Skating, Moguls and Hockey. I found it hilarious they had all this talk about Charles Hamelin and the other Canadian was the one to advance :p Jenn Heil was amazing, while it was no gold it was still an amazing performance, same with Quebec girl.
