Release Date: November 2007
All of us at IGN are massive fans of the Guitar Hero franchise, and when it was announced that Harmonix would be working with MTV on its next title we dreamt sweet dreams of the artists that they'd be able to sign. Then when the companies announced that Rock Band would be a four-piece game with vocals, guitar, bass and drums, we began shaking in our seats from the anticipation.
After having played the game at E3 we can say that it looks to have lived up to our expectations. Though there were only a dozen or so tracks available for play, the current set list is nothing short of fantastic, and the promise of 100 downloadable tracks in the first year sounds astonishing. But when you sit behind the drum set and tap along as someone screams vocals into the mic while two others pick up stringed duties, you'll feel like you're part of something special.
Where Guitar Hero hinted at what a rock music game could be, Rock Band looks to be the full realization of the design. It was incredibly fun to play, and we can't wait for more time up on stage.

Guitar Hero II introduced the ability to play cooperatively with one player on lead guitar and the other on rhythm or bass, but that was nothing. Rock Band adds vocals and a fantastic drum set to the mix to allow a full band's worth of four gamers to rock out on stage, and the result is intoxicating.
While you've been able to play most of the band's parts separately in other titles, this marks the first time that you'll be able to play the drums in a North American music game. The drum set that Harmonix has put together is fantastic and feels very similar to a real electronic kit. It's a little tricky at first, but once you get it down and can keep the beat, it's great fun.
Harmonix has made a number of other tweaks to its proven formula, like the ability to save a band member who has failed out by nailing a passage, and added sections where you can freely rock out to score extra points. We still don't know how much it'll cost, but we're willing to pay just about anything to rock out like that again as a full band.

With the redesigned E3 straying much more away from peripheral makers and other companies in favor of games, we weren't entirely sure what hardware there would be that would capture our imagination. How wrong we were, especially when we neared the Rock Band stage and sat down behind the Drum Set for the game.
The kit itself, arranged in a mild semi-circle, features a kick pedal for the bass drum, snare and pads that represent the floor, middle and high toms. What really impressed us is that this setup could take a beating: even with the most furious drummer lighting up the kit on the Hard difficulty setting, the peripheral took the percussive pounding without a single dropped beat. While we would've loved to see another external pad that represents the hi-hat or cymbal attached for some of the drum solo sections of songs, Harmonix managed to come up with a setup for the percussionist in us all that's always dreamed of taking over the stage with a solid, steady beat. For those of us ready to rock the drums, we salute you.
Runner(s)-Up:
# Guitar Hero III Wireless Guitar (RedOctane)
# Wii Balance Board (Nintendo)
Other Nominees:
# PSP Redesign (PS3 - Sony Computer Entertainment)

It also won Best Music Game for 360, as well as runner-up for Technological Achievement for 360 (the drum set being runner-up to Halo 3's video editor) as well as Best Game for 360 (behind Fallout 3). I assume the reason it didn't win the PS3 awards for Best Music Game and Best Multiplayer Experience is because the game was running on the 360 for the show (the PS3 awards were won by SingStar and Warhawk respectively).
