Actually.....
It all depends on what you or your band define yourself as....
I know you can't pull off the opposite genre but if you play something (metal being the example) you can add at least a sub genre to better explain your "style".
Everyone takes things in differently and so two bands with the same exact genre could sound totally different from eachother.

It is because there are so many different bands that fall under "metal" while sounding completely different from each other. People then get confused. I have met people who say "yeah I love metal! Iron Maiden? Is that a video game?" Sadly, in this country, 'mainstream' metal is pretty much screamo and metal core, which isn't really metal. And because some people like metal but only like classic metal and power metal, or people who only like thrash, or people who only like death metal, there needs to be classifications. Truly though "Heavy Metal" is supposed to be bands such as Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden but people have gone to use it to refer to all of metal so the gods have been classified as classic metal. And power metal, retaining an incredible amount of the qualities of classic metal would be in the same genre but because it isn't "classic" it needs its own group.
