I know these are the RB forums, but I posted a thread in the GH forums and it is a ghost town there.
So if anyone here has beat GH3 on expert, what were some strategies to beat Lou?

There's a fantastic spot to use the whammy powerup (if you're lucky enough to get that first) to defeat him quickly.
Lou always gets the first power up. If you survive that AND get your first powerup AND get the whammy one, save it.
Not long after this he'll get a string of extremely fast green notes, unleash the whammy and watch him fail.

the only way i can survive his first power up is if he gets a whammy or brokin string, anything else and I utterly fail. I'll try your suggestion, Piggy. Thanks

No problemo.
Now that you can download the boss songs you could try practicing it. But for the most part, if you're struggling with Lou, you should just keep retrying until you get the whammy powerup.

Exactly what Piggy said. If you're lucky you get whammy. I've also gotten lucky and scored a broken string in the same spot that broke the green.
That being said, if you don't get lucky there, you could always hit him with the big whammy of double notes, then whammy, then broken string, and if you timed all that well enough, score another powerup to put the nail in the coffin.

I'm really pissed off. Ya know why? My god damn GH3 disc won't read. I'll try to fix it later. I'm gonna play Mass Effect right now.

Yeah with hard boss battles it tends to be a lot about luck depending on what they and you get first. After that, it's all about using the power-up at the right moment.

Oh god Lou used to get me so frustrated until I got extremely lucky one day. He gave me a lefty flip and I magically hit a streak of notes which got me a lefty flip to use on him. Then he failed after that. I honestly have no idea how I won, I was so happy. It was all luck.

If you can beat "Raining Blood" you can beat Lou. Just keep trying but remember to take a few breaks. I took a 30 minute break once, came back and beat him on my first try that run. It's really just a matter of making sure you can hit the notes to begin with and quickly correcting yourself when he lays down a whammy or string break. If you can do that, hoard your power-ups and use them at the right time he's really a push-over.
