View Full Version : Point of using the normal frets?

I'm new to RB and I'm curious as to what the point is of using the normal frets on the guitar .. when you can play everything with the small frets on the bottom, and get used to it quicker that way for solos and fills.

I could see how it may be comfortable to use now, but theoretically if you just started using the small frets for everything that would basically make you much better at the solos and basically everything else thats tough on the guitar.

any comments on this?

I've been playing Guitar Hero since the first one came out and there's no way I'll ever wanna get used to the solo buttons. To me they are only good for the Big Rock Endings. I tried using them during solos and stuff but its just not much fun and i find it harder cause my fingers are kinda big.

I've got pretty big hands so I find the solo frets very difficult to use. Even for the big rock endings because of trying to hit the note after it with them.

Yeah, I never use the solo buttons except in the Big Rock Endings because they're just way too hard for me to use. I'm too used to the spacing of the normal frets and I end up pressing extra buttons, not knowing where my fingers are, etc.

Of course, the coolest and best way would be to learn to use both, and switch back and forth at appropriate times. That way you would look all cool and rock star like. ;)

I thought that you could only use the small buttons on solos.

likewise, i'm the same way, just can't get my fingers on those nasty solo buttons, i'll only use them during the big-finishes, and with the other hand (the strumming one, that is)

You can use them anytime, but you have to strum normally. When you use them in solos you don't have to strum.

i've played gh since day 1 and i play on expert pretty well. i can switch back and forth between the normal buttons and the solo buttons depending on the song and even section i'm playing. sometimes if there's a lot of awkward chord changes i use the solo buttons because it's easier to change chords because they're so much smaller and in turn require less distance to move.

iunno... i find the buttons easy to get used to and quite beneficial. course.. my hands aren't exactly the biggest hands you've ever seen in your life....

I think it feels a lot more natural and... guitar-like if you use the normal frets. I switch to the solo ones just to show off when friends are around, and I'd say the main disadvantage is that it's a lot harder on the wrists to use all the time. Since my guitar-type games started with Rock Band, I might try using just the solo frets for like a week though, see how it goes. If there are improvements to my scores, I'll post about it. :P

I've actually been going through a tour on Medium playing exclusively with the minifrets.

What I've noticed is that my hand doesn't fit well down there for long periods of time, and if I want to hold the guitar comfortably, I have to angle it so that the tilt sensor is always ready to trigger as soon as I have enough Overdrive.

For those two reasons, I'll always use the normal frets first for guitar, and I can't imagine using the minifrets for bass except on the Big Rock Ending. It just would feel wrong to be playing bass way up high on the neck like that.

I never use the small solo buttons
1. They're too small...and...
2. I'm too used to the positioning of the normal frets

Maybe For Whom the Bell Tolls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtoAj46L4Kg)? (About 30 seconds in) :D
