So with Guitar Hero: Encore (Rocks the 80's) coming out, I thought to myself: ok, so they're rocking the 80's but what about other decades that rocked equally hard if not harder?
So here's a poll for funsies to ask all of you rock experts out there...
What was the best decade for rock music?
Akaymay
07-21-2007, 04:48 PM
Definatly the 80's. Arena Rock all the way. Greatest decade in music HISTORY. AC/DC, Guns 'N Roses, ALL of those bands!
If you don't know what arena rock is, if you have Comcast Digital Cable, put on channel 412.
AC/DC is God, no questions asked.

I personally liked the 60's becuase it kinda helped to shape rock itself...with the stones and the beatles...both of them changed the face of rock history...and helped get the 70's rock started

All Decades ROCKED !!!!!!!!
The 70's rocked the most because of the all of the great albums and tours done then..... Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Golden Earring, and Cheap Trick..... They ALL R-O-C-K-E-D in the 70's !
Arena/Stadium Rock of the 80's -- Okay. I prefer Priest, Pro-Pain, and Metal Church.
But, I prefer the 90's to the 80's for ROCK..... 90's: Dream Theater, Filter, White Zombie, and even RUSH.....

I can't agree with 90's... I mean half the decade was pretty awesome, but the ass end of it was crap. The 70's rocked more overall through the whole decade, and more innovation in that decade than any other imo.

Unquestionably the 1970s, where rock got heavier and dirtier.
Then the 1980s that had lotsa cool stuff - moreover hard rock and heavy metal.
But I like the 1960s too (second half specifically), as it was the genesis of rock as we know it.

Whatever deacde Helloween brought their hellish power metal to the world lol
Most people would say the 80s, but I think that if the 80s rocked the most, then paradoxically, they sucked the most too. Because of hair bands.
But the foundations of everything there is today started on the 80s, so I guess that gives it quite a few points on its favor. Thats in Metal I mean. The rest of the 80s music sucked balls. So thats points against it.
I dont know, lots of great things that are still burning brightly today come out on the 90s. Its a tough call. Maybe Ill pick 90s because in general, rock in the 80s sucked for the most part.
But, if Almost Famous is any indication, the 70s would have been an awesome time to be a rocker...

Dude, thats the thing. It depends what kind of music you listen too. Helloween, Accept, Iron Maiden, Savatage....all awesome bands of the 80s, that were for the most part, part of the underground Metal movement that set the foundations for everything that would come out later.
Now, for your everyday rock or pop rock music, yeah, the 80s were just weird. I hate watching 80s movies because of the horrible music at the beginning (and the infamous montage).
For rock, the 90s were a sort of return to the 70s somewhat, but thats mainstream rock. Again, it depends what you are into. And the poll doesnt ask for especifics, just asks you what you think (which can sort of make it a weak poll to draw conclusions from, cuz obviously here we all listen to different stuff)

How about Sunn0))) they are pretty recent. A lot of good noise rock has come out recently. The internet has brought the lesser known genres to the masses, which is awesome because stores don't really see most Extreme Music.
So that is why the 00s are the greatest. Also they have every single album released in every previous era available for your listening pleasure.

Yeah tman. Saying Metal is dead is easy for anyone to say, yet when rock and roll is dying in a gutter of popular aberration, Metal is still strong, and still rocking harder.
Besides, what it means to be "alive" in popular is something Metal has never been anyway, nor it cares to be.

I haven't found metal in any way frightening or shocking for years. I've developed something of a distaste for it due to many saturday nights on which I have been forced by one of my friends to watch Headbanger's Ball, which is a pretty awful way to be introduced to modern metal. Not that their aren't good bands- Megadeth's not bad, Maiden's just made a great new album, and Metallica, though not retaining much of their past greatness in the studio, is still going strong live. So I guess whatever you're into is cool.

Thats just the thing man, Headbanger's Ball is not showing you REAL Metal. They are just showing you this alternative "metal" crap, and metalcore (which is not metal, period). Yes, Maiden's last album left me wondering how is it possible that Steve Harris can be alive when he has demi-god-like musical powers, but you have to look past Metallica, Megadeth, and yes, even Maiden. Getting into the core of what Metal is really about is tough, cuz yes, for the most part, its underground, especially here in the USA. Sure, bands like Hammerfall are considered more "mainstream", but they arent getting the mainstream treatment. I mean, you are either into Metal or you arent.
Thinking Metallica is all there is and these new bastardations of posers playing crappy music calling themselves Metal, when they arent, is all you have as contemporaries is not the way to go. I mean, Grave Digger, Paragon, and the rest of the german metal gods, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, Candlemass, Solitude Aeternus (for those into doom metal)....Metal has never died. Like I said elsewhere, Metal has never really been alive either. What means for a genre to be "alive", Metal has never tried to be that.

With Jimi Hendrix, really started the whole thing of guitar riffs. + Other awesome guitarists like Eric Clapton and such.
The Beatles of course, were there, but weren't they pop at the time? Well they put something there though.

I think thats mainly because of the age demographic here, plus Rock has changed a lot since Rock and Roll, and, for me at the very least, I find the 60s and 50s hard to bare musically, because they were the backbone of Rock, but the backbone I didn't find as nice as the current rock. Although, Jimi Hendrix... just, thats enough. No need to say anything else... legend :D

well i associate those times with songs like Rock Around the Clock, followed by thoughts of "how the hell did we get from that to bands like Nirvana, the Killers, and every other modern rock band". So I'm being one sided, basing EVERY SINGLE MUSICAL BIT on only a few songs, like "Yellow Submarine" and the aforementioned "Rock Around the Clock" and its only "All along the Watchtower" which keeps me going :D

To be on topic for a bit: 70's win because of Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Derek And The Dominos, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin. 60's should be coming in second because of The Beatles, Cream, CCR, Hendrix, and that whole Woodstock deal.

fine, my example of Nirvana is bad. Radiohead instead.
And, to SUGGEST FOR ONE SECOND that "Rock Around the Clock" is better than anything, be it "yes we can" by made in mexico, or smells like teen spirit by nirvana, is plain stupid.
Cobain was overrated, but the band was still good. I call it "throwaway rock" I can listen to it once on the radio and go "yh thats gd" but I wouldnt want to go buy the album

The poll is clearly asking what decade [B]rocked[B] the most. Adding the 80's and 90's to the poll is an absolute joke. Don't get me wrong I listen to and love some of the music which emerged from those decades but the music was anything but rock. The 50's showed us the roots of rock with musicians such as Chuck Berry. Once the 60's arrived rock exploded and true rock and roll continued into the late 70's with the eventual arrival of punk and metal. So to even consider any decades but the 50's, 60's and 70's is a joke.

I seriously just spent at least 20 minutes thinking about this. I really didn't like having to only chose one, but I had to go with the 70s. This is only because I like more bands that played in that era than the others. I still love B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and elvis during the 50s, but I dont listen to enough of that music to call it the best decade. The 60s were very close seeing how I love Hendrix, Cream, Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Doors, but the hard rock from the 70s just barely edged it out for me. I also like the 80s with all the great thrash metal bands, and I still also like the hair metal. The 90s was alright, but only because of the grunge movement. froms the 00s I really only like a couple underground bands and old bands that are releasing new stuff. Im only 16, and I dont think its fair to say that just because Rock Band has a young audience we dont appreciate old music. I like old music more than I like new music. I think the main reason the 50s and 60s haven't been choosen as much is because that stuff hasn't really been in the Guitar Hero games, and the main fan base for RB is people that like the newer music in GH.
I dont know why so many people have to flame Nirvana. They were a great band because they were so raw coming after a time of superficial hair metal bands. Kurt Cobain wrote great songs and just because it werent the greatest instrumentally (I still think that Dave Grohl was talanted) they brought back an aspect that music had been lacking, emotion. If you dont like their music than just dont talk, because it really does not good to just say that Nirvana sucks and is overrated just because you dont like their music.

The 70's for sure. The best music comes from that era. Queen, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, etc. Those bands made that era the best at rockin' out.

Oh
Emm
Gee
You're so right.
I once heard a wise man say "The best thing Kurt Cobain released was the safety".
Wow, and I was starting to think I was the only one who thought Nirvana was trash and overrated...I ****in hate people who put Cobain in the top echelon of guitarists...come on, I could go pick up a guitar and play 75% of his **** without even touching it before.

I agree, Cobain definitely wasnt one of the best guitarists or singers out there, but seriously, you have to give him credit.
anyway, I chose the 80's because of iron maiden mostly

The 70s rocked the most for me. About every single band I like besides a couple from the 80s and 2 from the present I like formed in the 70s. Rush,Deep Purple,Blue Oyster Cult, Kansas, Yes,Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Heart, the list just goes on.:)
Edit: I like The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Beatles a bit too.

Pumpkins are amazing. They're really a kinda band that'll either do nothing for you or absolutly change how you look at music forever... for me they are the latter... And their singles ar enever their best songs. They may truly have been the last band to make albums unstead of just songs...

80's what can compare to the birth of thrash metal?
Ill tell ya what compares...oh I dont know .hmmmm i dont know ... how bout the 50's for the birth of rocknroll. without Alan Freid (who coined the phrase) and Elvis who made it cool to wear eye liner, Chuck Berry whos riffs are ripped off to this day, Jerry Lee Lewis who is the embodiment of the rocknroll lifestyle (shot his base player while sitting in his car then complained that he was bleeding on his seat), and a slew of others not occupying the three stained glass windows in the Hard Rock Cafe, and early bluesmen without whom none of todays music would exist at all

I say the 70's. (apart from the whole disco abomination)
It was just a lot more free for musicians. Self-indulgence was a good thing then record labels were willing to take a chance and develop new artists. I doubt any current A&R people even know the term, "development deal".
The 80's started out great with the rise of British metal, and the death of disco. As the decade progressed, (like the rest of America) corporate greed took over, and you saw the clone wars. Example: Bon Jovi hit big, then every label had to have their own Bon Jovi clone. This is what fostered the hair bands and made them spread like crabs on a toilet seat. A ton of good metal bands were ignored in pursuit of $$, shooting for the lowest common denominator.
The 90's brought the scourge that was grunge, and the slew of Pearl Jam and Nirvana clones. There were a few lone bright spots- Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. The 90's also introduced the world to the loudness wars without telling us. Here's an eye-opening article on this travesty (http://www.prorec.com/Articles/tabid/109/EntryID/247/Default.aspx). Check it out, it will explain why so many new cd's sound so bad. If you can't hear it, you're lucky.
So......yeah, the 70's rocked the hardest.

AC/DC is awesome but I like Bon Scott better (1970's)

Had to go 70's. Prog rock is my main genre of interest. Fantastic stuff there. I also like funk (although I hated it in the late 70's as a teenager). I've come to love a little Billy Preston or Parliment. Preston isn't as funky but he's good.
Arena rock wasn't bad either....I saw about 5 Ted Nugent shows and they always rocked!
Led Zeppelin, Queen, Jethro Tull shall I go on?

mid/late-60's through mid/late-70's, PERIOD. The music that came out in that time frame influenced EVERYTHING you're listening to today. Whether it be the Who, the Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, various punk bands, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, Black Sabbath. Rock music was being created from blue, jazz, folk, R&B, etc etc etc.
There's plenty of good bands out there today (or the 80's, 90's and now), but there has never been such a concentration of all-time greats to come out as there was during the above period. New bands will still be giving credit to bands of that era 20 years from now.

80s rocked the hardest hands down also the best guitar came out of the 80s. back when friends joined bands and rocked for the pure fun not like now when you have all these solo artist out for the money. back then rock came from the heart!!! 80s RULE!!!!!!
Ok, I'm sry but the best guitar didnt come from 80s. You really don't know what you are talking about. I mean, you can say you love the 80s but even 50s had as good guitar as 80s. There was Les Paul, Chuck Berry, ect. Even in the 30's, there was Robert Johnson. In the 70s there was Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, Page, ect. Now don't go and tell 80's had the most talented musicians or whatever. Did you ever listened to Gentle Giant? They're 4 and they sound like an whole orchestra.
Just lemme make a few corrections here
50s for rubbish like Rock Around the Clock which only ur gran likes
60s for Psychedelia
70s for Punk
80s for Nu Wave
90s for Britpop, Alternative Rock NOT PUNK
00s for Good Bands from the 90s selling more albums...
50's is not rubbish. How can you insult these composers when you never listened to 50's music?
late 60s early 70s were the best IMO,
I voted 70s though.
That's exactly what i think lol.
PS- AC/DC's singers were great, but I listened to the whole back in black album and every song sounds exactly like the one before. The only song that is not the perfect copy of they're previous ones is Thunderstruck. Well that's why I don't like them. But I'm being rough in that post lol. Sry to all you 80s fanboys.
PPS- Yeah well Metal's best period was probably 80's because of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. But as everyone said, 80s pop is bad. Real bad. Like 90s and 00s.

Music did not come in 70's. Music has probably been created in like... -15 000. And though present music is influenced by (ex: ) Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin was highly influenced by Robert Johnson.

I voted for the 70's. So much was happening during that decade as far as music goes.
The early 70's gave rise to Black Sabbath, KISS, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and so many others. I always considered the early 70's as the birth of heavy metal.
The mid to late 70's was the rise and fall of Disco.
Then you have the late 70's with punk rock both in England and NYC, which to me would have been the most fun era to live in (as far as music scenes go). The only dilemma I have is where would I want to be at the time... London or New York? Screen on the Green or CBGB's?
Tough, tough choices. ;)
