View Full Version : Female singers

Okay, so my band and I are holding auditions for singers, and the rest of the band is trying to talk me into a girl singer.

I've never liked girl singers, especially when post-Evanescence bands like Flyleaf and Paramore all sound the same, so you can imagine how excited I was when I found a girl who answers our ad with 'Yeah, I'm a good singer. I do Evanescence covers, mostly.'

So now everyone in the band is turning against me, saying that I have a problem with girls and implying on my 'super macho chauvinistic behavious'.

My argument to them was there isn't equality in male and female vocals. You'd have to be the stupidest people in the world to look me in the eye and tell me that it didn't make a difference.

And them?
'But, dude, she's hot!'

I just don't know. I don't think I could be in a band that's going in a musical direction that I don't like.

Any thoughts?

I think that if you think bands like Flyleaf and Paramore sound the same, you might want to have your hearing checked... :)

Are they trying to talk you into a female singer because of THAT specific girl, or because that's the sound they want from the music you're all writing? That's an important distinction to make. If it's not the sound you want, leave. There are plenty of other bands out there that can utilize your talents.

How old are you and how old are the people in your band?

If she can sing well for the music your band plays, and isn't a psycho hose beast, I'd say let her in the band. A good singer is a good singer, and a hot female singer is likely to get more guys coming to your shows.

Ummm just because a girl CAN do a good evanessence cover doesnt mean she wants to do them all the time.........
Have you given her a chance to see what else she can do and what she likes to do?
Have you also put forward clearly, the direction you want the band to go in to see if she is happy with that and wanting to achieve the same goals?

I don't believe there is a difference in male an female vocals, if you find the vocalist that fits with your band......
I know a lovely girl who looks VERY girly, but when she gets her growl on, I know Death Metal vocalists that couldnt tell it was a girl - and in fact most of them didnt believe me until I showed them photos.......

Maybe instead of directing your attitude toward her, based on her sex, you should find out whether your paranoid fears are actually just unfounded attempts to hide your chauvinism........ and if the band is in fact going in a direction you dislike, and all of the others are happy to go that way, then it's pretty obvious you need to find a new band LOL

If your distaste for female singers is rooted in any kind of feelings that "girls shouldn't sing", then it's sexist.

If you literally do not like the way a female voice blends with the music, then it's no different than disliking the way certain men sound singing.

Personally, it's a rare female that sounds good to my ears in a rock setting. Arch Enemy, but then she's a growler. Kittie works, too. But it IS rare, and I'm FAR from sexist.

no, not really.

Dude, look at Abnormality.

Seriously, I personally have no problem with female singers (hell, I'd take anything I could get, singers are hard to find). Besides, worst case scenario, the band could use some eye candy.

It's not rare for me to find female singers I like? Please, continue.

...yeah, I realize my wording was ambiguous, sorry haha.

Don't underestimate the power of this statement as well. I speak from personal experience. ;)

You need to get a hot MALE singer though so that you get more ladies coming to your shows. Unless you are into dudes in which case carry on!

Personally I prefer female singers, I just think their voices (on average) sound better than dudes' voices. All personal preference!

What does that even mean?

Guys typically sound better in a rock setting. What music are you playing, and what does she sound like? I'd personally drop her and the band if your mates' best argument is "She's hawt", but I don't know where your band is going and what she sounds like.

Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler would like to have a word with you.

This. A hot girl will get you some short-term success, but in the long haul it'll be an obvious gimmick that won't garner much respect and you won't grow beyond a local audience.

Sure, if you want to keep playing at bars and cancer walks, go with the hawt bitcsh, but shoot for sound above all. Personally I'd have massive respect to any rock band that was led by an ass-ugly girl with a great voice.

Wow dude, that's quite the sweeping generalization that really only applies to one situation: If she's hot but can't sing.

If she's hot but CAN sing (see: Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, etc.), it's quite a different situation.

MisterMixelpix

Well then she's not a "hot girl". She's a singer who happens to be hot.

To me, the phrase "hot girl" implies that the "hot" is the quality that landed her in the band.

do it

hold "try outs" with your pants down and whoever does the "best" makes the band

then you can search for a real singer

who cares if you prefer a male singer. if a female singer wont make you happy, dont waste your time. ultimately youre doing this for fun.

If your bandmates want the singer solely because she is hot, you need to tell them this very old joke:

Two bulls stood on a hill. They looked down on a valley where a dozen cows grazed.

The young bull said, "Hey Pop, let's run down there and (have relations with) one of those heifers."

"No, Son," said the old bull. "Let's WALK down there and (have relations with) ALL those heifers

If they want her because she is a good singer then maybe you should listen to them.

In retrospect, I should have told you guys that we play metal and hard rock.

And as for a few of the issues you brought up,
No, I am not sexist,
Yes, the sex of the singer makes a HUGE difference,
And yes, she is hot. (And I must emphasize hot, I was truly surprised at just how good she looks)

As for my band mates, we're tight friends. Quitting really isn't an option to me, no matter how thick they act.

She either sounds good, or she doesn't simple as that, same with a man.

Yeah, I should've worded it better, but it means what it says, male and female vocals aren't the same thing.

Heh.

Not so simple, I'm afraid.
We have to think about styles that don't work well with female or male vocals, subject matter that girl or guy singers can/will sing about, not to mention the huge difference it would make in our (possible) fanbase.

You still haven't told us what she sounds like.

We were going to audition her tomorrow, but she postponed.
