Pretend I'm saving my nickels and dimes to get a PS3 pretty much only for Rock Band.
Is the 40gig PS3 sufficient? Will this let me play online and get me everything I need to play Rock Band?
I've read I'd need to buy a (cheap) USB hub? Is that true?
Also: Online play with PS3's is free, while is costs a fee with Xbox? Is that right?
Thanks for your help... sorry for newb questions... I'm a PC gamer. :)

The 40gig only has 2 usb slots. So, it your choice i have the 40gig andim goign to be a udb thign so i can have a full band play at once.
and even though im not that much of a fanboy but i would get the ps3 and yes its free. But ps3 has unlocked potential and while i think the xobox is already has the full potentail already. And i have a feeling in like 2-3 years the ps3 will kill the xbox 360 if you havent heard microsoft already stopped sellign xbox's they stopped production for xbox's. But ps3 is still making ps2's until it evens out. But it depends on what you want. Do you want good game NOW? if so get xbox. But if you want awesome game that will probably demolish the xbox 360 then get the ps3. Again this is my opionon all of this may be wrong but this is how i feel about this.

You would be fine.
You are correct that you would need a USB hub though since the 40 GB PS3 would not have sufficient slots for 4 instruments at once. (But that's like 5 to 10$ so not a big deal)

The only thing I'd add is don't bother to get a hub until you need it. If it's just going to be you, playing through solo tours and online, you won't need more than 2 USB ports at any one time.

One thing that may be of interest is if you like to use cards like SD, MMC, Compact Flash, etc... to store stuff on, the 40 gig does not come with any actual memory card slots, so you'll be stuck using USB storage if you ever feel the need to upload/copy stuff on or off the PS3.
I use SD cards for everything (Palm Pilot, PC, Digital Camera, Wii), and the card slots on the PS3 are really convenient for me. I figured I'd give you a heads up just in case.

i think the 40gig is a good value. i probably wouldve went that route if it was an option back when i got mine (the days when it was 20gig or 60gig:)).
basically the 40gig will do the job you need it to do...play ps3 games like rock band, and blu ray movies. it has basically all the other features of other ps3s. sure it doesnt have backwards compatibility with ps1 and ps2 games like the other models, but most people never look back at their old collection. even if you did want to play it, you can always dust off the old ps2. you would still have to do that if you got a different next gen system anyway.
the hard drive size doesnt really matter because at some point we are all going to upgrade to 250gigs, 320gigs, or whatever the next largest size they come out with in the 2.5in size.
the usb ports shouldnt be a problem a cheap hub cant solve. if youre going to be playing multiplayer games using regular controllers you wont need a hub because the controllers are wireless using built in bluetooth.
i have the memory card readers on my ps3 and have memory stick media as well as SD cards, but i have never used it once. i have used USB drives. if you do have those types of memory cards you obviously have a way to transfer it to a USB drive. it'll be an extra step, but at least you can still get the job done.
im not saying you should buy a ps3 over an xbox360. im not a gamer and have no idea which one is better. i love the fact that the psn is free. were all waiting to see how great home really will be. but to me it sounds like people are much happier with xbox live. and although it is a pay service, when you look at the price paying for a year or whatever in advance, it's still really cheap.
all im just saying if a ps3 is what you want, there is no shame or major drawbacks to getting the 40gig. it's well worth the $100 in savings.
