View Full Version : So the new MW2 map pack costs...

BuRn7 CaK3

1200 ms points for 5 maps. Is it really worth it? I mean, that's just $15 for 5 maps!

The maps are:

New maps:
"Bailout," a multi-level apartment complex
"Storm," an open industrial park littered with heavy machinery
"Salvage," a snowy junkyard fortified by stacked debris and crushed cars

Modern Warfare maps:
"Crash," a war-torn urban environment
"Overgrown," which features a massive dry creek bed

If you all remember correctly. The variety map pack for MW was only $10 (800 MS points) and that was for four maps.

After being revealed earlier today, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling made an appearance on Major Nelson's weekly podcast earlier this evening to discuss the upcoming Stimulus map pack. On it, Bowling confirmed that the pack will be comprised of five maps (three new maps and two "slightly reworked" maps from Call of Duty 4) and also announced the price: 1,200 Microsoft Points, or $15. That's right, the map pack will actually cost one quarter of the game's price itself. The Battlefield guys are going to have a field day with this.

You could argue that the map pack being just $5 more than the price that most people were expecting (800 points) isn't really that big of a deal. But Activision and CEO Bobby Kotick have continued to amass a reputation as a company that cares about nothing more than money, and this decision isn't going to help that perception one bit.

Will you be buying the maps when they're released in just over two weeks? If not, is it because of the price or other reasons? Let us know in the comments.

Well I sold my MW2 copy a while ago. If I still owned it, I still wouldn't buy it. It's just not worth it. Now, if it was priced at $10. I would get it (saying that I still owned MW2).

Not for $15 I won't be buying them. I personally prefer Battlefield: Bad Company 2 over MW2; so I can wait until the MW2 maps are a "Deal of the Week" or something (granted I know it's not likely to happen until probably after the Summer).

$10 was overpriced but manageable when Halo 3 set the new standard. $15 is ridiculous.

I'm gonna get it for sure. Seems worth it to me. Especially since I suffer from Mapathy. I distinctly remember people thinking the Variety Map Pack for CoD4 was cheap and people were surprised how cheap it was, now that they are used to this, 5 more dollars is ridiculous.

Also, I don't understand how people are comparing this map pack to the free map pack that Bad Company 2 is getting. BC2 is only getting two maps, and it's technically just 2 maps that people already have but assigned to different game modes. You're not getting anything of value.

I can't really afford it, so I won't be getting it anytime soon. I don't really know what I think about it for value wise. £10 for 5 maps doesn't seem too bad.

I'm buying them, 15 dollars for 5 maps is technically better than 10 dollars for 3 maps, however, 2 of the maps are already been made, so you would think the price would be cheaper

BC2 is much better IMO. But if i were a CoD junkie, i still would not get it. its essentially $15 for 2 NEW maps, the CoD4 ones are old.
all they are doing is polishing up the old ones to run well with the game engine and leave it at that.

Thing is, the already made 2 maps aren't just simple copy-paste procedures for us to play them in MW2. They still had to tweak and convert and perfect before it was usable.

There are 3 new maps, 2 are repurposed from COD4, for a total of 5. Without seeing them, it's hard to tell what changes are being made in those maps (they're said to be slightly redesigned for MW2), but I'm certainly glad they're coming back. $3 a map is more than acceptable for me, considering I pay $2 for a RB song that sometimes I only play once.

I saw on the Xbox.com MW2 Forums that the DLC was going to be more than just maps. I don't know if it is true but from what I read there is going to be more Spec Op missions, Perks, Weapons, Challenges, Titles, and Emblems added to multiplayer. Again I read this on the MW2 Xbox.com forums so it might not be true but all of this is worth $15 to me.

****, I agree with you. I actually was expecting the five maps to be $20.

When you turn it around and look at it from a RB point of view, you get 7.5 songs for $15. Not that big of a difference.

Yes, but with Rock Band, you will likely get to play those songs on new games for possibly years to come. When COD6 or MW3 or whatever comes out, they're basically worthless.

I don't really care for playing games like these online, I like single player more, but $3/map is pretty ridiculous. I'd rather buy Atomic than a new map.

Then you're not the target market. That's what I'm trying to stress here. This map pack is for people who bought MW2 only for multiplayer, or played the campaign once and then went crazy on multiplayer. If you prefer the single player mode, then this isn't for you. I really hope the next DLC offering has more Spec Ops missions, even though I haven't got 3 stars on them all yet since I can't find anyone to play with.

On that note, someone should help me out with Spec Ops.

I suppose if say, Perfect Dark had come out with extra re-made Goldeneye maps or something, I'd maybe plunk down a few points for each one. So I guess it depends how much you play the game.

How many multiplayer maps come with MW2 anyway?

You kids and your paid for maps. Back in my day when we played Quake 2 we downloaded our maps for free and that is the way we liked it dangnabit! That's 3$ an hour for entertainment. Plus the two "old" maps could be the best maps ever created for a FPS. Especially crash.

Well, it will NEVER be on the PS3. The 360 and Wii are still a possibility, but it's not very likely. All of the parties involved are competing and they can't come to an agreement. More than likely, they both want the other to budge, but they won't, so it's never going to happen.

You seem to be neglecting that people who bought the game new don't just get those maps free, but any maps they release from then on. If you get it used you can buy a DLC pass for only 10-15$ i believe, which is really cheap in the long run. Not to mention BFBC2 maps are far bigger and varied than MW2's maps.

It's not? I swore I heard that it was. It has more of a chance to go on Wii Virtual Console than XBLA for the simple fact that Nintendo owns the rights to Goldeneye 007, if I recall correctly.

Banky71
03-16-2010, 01:01 AM
Without Nintendo allowing Goldeneye o be released on XBOX 360 it is highly unlikely that Microsoft would allow for it to be released on the Virtual Console. Nintendo one owned a part or Rare. When Nintendo lost intrest in Rare the Rare people bought Nintendo out of those shares. Now Microsoft owns Rare. For the game to be released on any console you would need to obtain rights from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Activison(which owns the game rights to James Bond games now). The deal Microsoft had set up is said to have included a deal with Nintendo to release the game on VC as well. Nintendo decided not to allow it so no one will get the game for a release.

Kariodude
03-16-2010, 02:17 AM
Here is the problem with Goldeneye.

Rare, the developer who made it, is owned by Microsoft.

It was Nintendo's property then, so they still have a stake in it.

Thirdly (and this is brought up the least) Activision owns the rights to all James Bond related gaming releases, so even though Goldeneye was before they got those rights, they would also have to be a part of it.

More than likely, it will only end up on one of the consoles. Whichever company ends up paying off the other one enough.

I think people are overreacting.

Exactly how I feel. My opinion is that I think it's not worth the $15. I don't think ANY map pack for an online-focused FPS is worth it, especially if it's a yearly title like Call of Duty. You'll pay so much for the maps, then a short while later everyone has moved on to the next (new) game, and you are left with a bunch of multiplayer maps you don't play anymore. It's only worth it to grab the maps if you play split-screen often, or LAN parties. Me personally, I won't get it, simply because I don't play online too often to warrant the purchase. If they are going to incorporate the DLC into EVERY SINGLE PLAYLIST then you should kiss online play goodbye, because you will be getting kicked out a LOT for not having the maps. How hard is it to make a filter so that you avoid this issue?

*sigh* 1UP is on the Activision hate train too? Seriously, they are just overreacting. It's one thing to not like the company, but to let it influence their reporting of gaming news (and how they write it)? Ridiculous. I see this all too often on Joystiq, etc. I'm just tired of the Activision bashing...stop complaining and vote with your wallet if you are so sick of them. Meanwhile, I'll be happy playing their games that they publish, as long as they appeal to me.
