Can anyone please explain how exactly starts are awarded? Is it based on accuracy, points, or a combination of both? Will using my Overdrive effectively help me earn stars faster?

Its all to do with points.

Obviously if you can keep your mulitplier longer and can go into overdrive at 4x then the points will add up much quicker then if you keep missing notes and breaking your combo.

My question is:
What are they good for?

Fans and points raise you ranking, money is good for spending, what good are the stars?

They're no good at all. Just like your points, they're only an indicator of your performance on a song.

Stars are for some requirements. The Hall of Fame Induction and Endless Setlist both require a certain amount of Stars to unlock. I believe some venues require a certain amount of stars to unlock too, but that may only be fans, I can't remember.

Stars are the primary requirement for unlocking this or that actually. Far, far less than half of the unlocks are fan/other related.

Stars are awarded based on your personal (Solo Tour) or band (BWT) score which is generally in the 50,000 to 1,000,000 point range. Before you even start playing there is a score calculated which if you pass you get X number of stars. Stars are STRICTLY based off of points.

Yes, overdrive usage helps your chance to win stars in fact with multiple players the effects of overdrive make a huge difference to the score for the exact same notes hit.
