can any one tell me why this is there or what it is for . nothing is metion of this in the owners manual. can any one shed some light on this subject

Because the same model was used for both PS3 and Xbox360. The PS3 guitar is wireless, and requires batteries.
The Xbox360 guitar is (obviously) not wireless, and the battery compartment is vestigial. Just ignore it.

yea there are no wires going to it. its not connected

See, I lashed out on the rechargable battery thing now to be told it's pretty much useless...
