View Full Version : Are PS3 Slims decent?

Hello all, I've had a 360 for two years now and I've been looking to maybe get a PS3 at some point. I'm really interested in some of it's exclusives like Ratchet and Clank (I grew up with it!) and Heavy Rain. I've been trying to research for myself as to which type of PS3 would be the most reliable/best overall, but I'm still undecided.

I've heard that certain versions lack the ability to play PS2 games, which is one thing I'm partially looking for in a PS3. Although it really wouldn't be the end of the world for me as I still do have a PS2 nonetheless.

I don't know anybody with a PS3, and I honestly don't know anything about the PS3's hardware failures. I've heard that it's less hassling than a RROD (something I've faced 3 times in 2 years..:(). I want to get the new slim (especially if it's cheaper), although I'm not sure if it really is better than a 20, 40, 60, or 80 gig. Hardware space probably isn't going to be an issue, I mean I would probably spend more time online with my 360 anyway.

Are the older systems really prone to as many hardware failures as a 360? Would a slim run better? Should I spend 300 bucks on a slim or an 80 gig? I'm looking for some advice from PS3 owners here.

Please comment!

Thank You!

I have a PS3 slim and I like it very much. 120GB is a big enough HDD for what I intend to use it for - Blu-ray and some games. It's not backwards compatible, but I have a PS2 slim if I ever feel the need to play a PS2 game.

Do you know if they are really all that much better than a fat?

They have an even LOWER failure rate than the fat PS3's and they are smaller and much quieter than the fat ones. They also have bigger stock harddrives now. I think they have a 120GB and a 250GB. They have a lot more space.

And as far as failure rate goes, I've had my fat 80GB PS3 for nearly 2 years now with absolutely no problems as long as you keep it well ventilated you should have no problems. The PS3's are a million X's more reliable than any 360.

I'm in the same boat with my 360. It's just sitting there collecting dust. I tried selling it on craigslist, I had a few people interested as it's in mint condition, but nobody went through with it. I'm selling it for $150, anybody need one?:D

I think that the 60GB is the way to go. But since they are very hard to find new and you don't seem too affected by PS2 compatability, go with the slim. The 60GB does have more USB ports. But both are good choices.

The slim's great, in fact, the only difference between it and a fat is is that you can't install Linux on the Slim.

Also, if you look around the internet, there's a coupon for a FREE PS3!!!11!

The fat looks sexier.

They're okay, but they tend to overheat quickly. Also, you'll need a powered USB Hub if you want to play all four instruments on RB.

^^^ This is false. they actually run on a 1/3 less power and do not run as hot as the older fat models

I play with all four instruments quite frequently on my slim. I only use the hub that came with RB2.

What are you talking about? Are you kidding?

Mine seems to make weird popping noises (I'm assuming it's the case) when I play it for extended periods of time.

Runs fine though, and haven't had any problems with it since I bought it at launch.

they're decent insofar as they can fit in overhead compartments

first generation of PS3s---yes, the ones where you pay more money for less gigs--are still the best because of the backwards compatibility

Seeing as the "fat" PS3's YLOD hardware issues don't really arise until 2-3 years into its lifespan, I'm not willing to say they have lower failure rates. We'll have to wait and see.

And the bluray drive is slower on the slim.

Oh man, I keep hearing that in 2-3 years, the YLOD issues begin with the fat PS3's. My PS3 is coming up to the 2 year mark this summer :(

Seeing as I have a refurb of an 80 gig, I have no idea how old my PS3 technically is. I know it's the 2008 model of the 80 gig. Meh. It's had no problems so far, aside from a few noises from the Blu-Ray player that don't sound all that healthy when a game is booting up sometimes.

Anyway, I wanted to get a slim myself anyway, but they were all sold out (this was around Christmas time.)

An 80 gig refurb should run you about $250, at the cost of maybe a little less reliability.
