Confused about Controllers

Newbie here. I received both XBOX 360 Rock Band (with Guitar controller) and Guitar Hero III (no controller, just the game) for Christmas. I've seen all the posts about lack of compatibility between Guitar Hero and Rock Band controllers, but I am confused about which ones work and which do not. I was able to use my cousin's Guitar Hero controller with my Rock Band game, but I can't use my Rock Band guitar controller with my Guitar Hero III.

Is there any guitar controller that works with both Guitar Hero III and Rockband?

On Xbox, the old wired Xplorer from GH2, and the Les Pauls from GH3 will work on RB.

The RB Strat will not work on GH3.

I have no idea if the Xplorer works on GH3. Anybody else?

I've read from numerous places that the 360 xplorer and les paul works with RB.
