Hi, I upgraded my 40gb PS3 to a 500gb drive last weekend, and now it lags when I play rock band 2. haven't tried other rb games, But all other games I've tried seem to play smoothly, including guitar hero.
It will freeze up for 1-3 seconds at the start of a song, the sound will sometimes loop or glitch as well. I think it only happens to tracks on the hdd, I don't think RB2 tracks freeze, only imported tracks and DLC.
I don't think I've redownloaded any DLC. All the tracks were put ont he hdd using the ps3 backup utility.
The HDD is a WD blue drive. And i would've thought it'd be faster than the stock 40gb drive if anything. I wonder if it's a size issue? 500gb is kinda crazy.
I'm going to try swapping in a hdd from one of my laptops. But if someone had some other things I could try first then that'd be much appreciated.

Sad, no responses :(
Well I was bored today, So I took out the 500gb Seagate HDD from one of my laptops and installed it in the PS3, restored the same backup.
And it's working fine now! For the record the laggy hdd is a WD5000BEVT. So RB fans avoid this HDD to be on the safe side I guess.
The only thing different, was that DLC wasn't working straight away. Last time I redownloaded a downloaded game (Super Puzzle Fighter). This time I redownloaded a RB DLC track.
Once you redownload some DLC, it activates all DLC on the new HDD, there's probably a better way.

Hmmm... my original 60GB PS3 drive lags every now and then. I just figured this was common across the board, regardless of what hard drive you have installed. Many of my friends experience the same lagging/audio skipping issues.
I'm planning to upgrade my drive soon, as I'm down to under 1GB of free space. Did the backup utility save your RB game data? Like your bands, characters, etc?
I'd hate to have to redo the ESL if I upgrade my drive to something bigger.

so i've been having the same problem. i put in a samsung 320gb ard drive 5400rpm and 8mb buffer. i've been trying to find a reason why it skips and haven't found a solid reason. i read in one spot that the higher rpm rate might be the reason and i read today that it could be the cache. i would like to find out what it is though cause it is very frustrating to be doing well and have it ruined by the game skipping. what is the cache on the hard drive you put in from your laptop. im thinking of getting a seagate 7200rpm with 16mb cache. i will reply when i get the results. if you find anything out, please post.

The working hdd, is a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS (http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=04d26c9cf9c2d110VgnVCM100000f5 ee0a0aRCRD) has 8mb cache and 5400RPM
The Laggy Drive is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=506) which also has 8mb Cache & 5400RPM

I too had problems with the WD. I read somewhere that this lag happens because of a power save feature in the drive, but I was unable to get solid, substantial confirmation of this. It also caused me problems in NCAA Football, so I knew it wasn't game specific. Went with a seagate 250 gb instead, and it works flawlessly

I know the WD green drives for desktops have power saving features that can interfere with some applications. But I assumed the blue drives were fine.

I might be confusing all of them that I read about. Thats why I qualified my statement instead of trying to sound like i was the utmost authority on the subject! :)

well, i finally got the hard drives switched out and got the ps3 up and running. played about 6 songs and didnt have a problem with any of them skipping. i usually got it every to every other song when i was having issues. ill post if i have any problems and ill also post what the hard drive is when i have a second to check what it is. just for reference, i read something somewhere about there being issues with hard drives that are 3.0 mb/s rather than the factory 1.5 mb/s. the first one i put in was 3.0 and the one thats in now is 1.5, so that could be something to look into. later.

well, everything seems to be ok but i did have one problem. i played god of war 3 completely through with the old hard drive and had no issues and tried to play through it again after i switched the hard drives and had freezing issues. apparently this is a problem that many are having that just needs to be patched. hopefully they get it fixed cause thats way too great a game to be having issues. thats all for now.
