They were going to put it in, but it was just too boring. I, myself, like playing bass, but I guess the general public does not. XD

I love bass but I agree with Harmonix that it shouldn't get a career. Mainly just because you'd be using the same controller and that just doesn't seem very wise as far as keeping the game from getting boring.

I couldn't disagree more than I do with those of you who think the following
1) Bass shouldn’t have its own career track
2) Bass is boring
While I will agree that the bass is the Bas***d red-headed step-child of (at least) Rock Band, I also believe that there are just some folks who are bass end players.
So, yes, I play bass - in the real world. This, of course, lends itself to my play style. With that said I do have to say also that I am NOT a guitarist who couldn't hack it. I am a bass player - I have been one for nearly 30 years and I don't think it is very likely to get boring for me any time soon. For those who need to be sure I am not full of hooey, feel free to look me up. I am two songs from finishing the guitar track on expert – so it isn’t that I am hugely guitar challenged.
I guess I might even be able to get over it all if bass scores were tabulated and had their own leaderboard. Sure, you are going to say they do...but it is missing that critical "what does it all add up to" piece. They have three careers in already – adding similar code to the game (to handle the bass career track) wouldn’t kill anyone. (Before I start a huge discussion on programming – I am not saying that it is a simple fix – only that it wouldn’t be as rough as putting together a career track from scratch)
I understand that there are a LOT of folks who are happier playing guitar - but there are also a lot of you that I would be happy to play with any time. I promise not to get bit**y about you playing guitar all the time and I will just enjoy playing bass. For some of you getting in to a band where there is actually someone who WANTS to play bass is a new thing. So, jot my name down and feel free to invite me – I am just happier being the bass player.
If you wanted a second (or perhaps I should say "another") guitar hero - I would like to assert that this isn't it. And to have career tracks for everyone but the bass players is simply not fair.
If you think that a bass career is, or would be, too boring I would also suggest that you wouldn't have to play it. No one is suggesting that you drop everything you do on the guitar tracks to do so - and honestly, there are easier ways to grab achievement points than to work you way through 60+ songs.
Thanks for reading this far – and if you need a bass player who can hold her own – please feel free to shoot an invitation my way

I wouldn't mind if there was a Bass career (or sub-career? just the interesting ones) since if it was boring I wouldn't play it. But at least I could.
And for Cowbell.. well you can actually buy a cowbell and use it to activate the "clap" hits during the vocal breaks. Tambourine might work as well.

Yeah, I'm missing the bass career as well. Guitar just ain't funky enough.
...and if they were worried about boring bass, they just could have thrown in some Primus, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Rush. Boring solved!

For the record - my tambourine seems to do the job every bit as well as banging something in to the mic. ;)

yeah i'd like a bass career because it'd give me more stuff to do and like others said, the ability to track leaderboard and star stats.
