Can you use a regular controller instead of a guitar?

I really enjoy being able to just use my old PS2 controller to play Guitar Hero, it is much easier and more accurate then having to strum and hit together. So I try to do this on the Rockband and it only wants to let my use it for the singer. I also figured it would be the way to play bass since the game doesnt come with 2 controllers but it seams that you cant actually do that either.

The four of us are tying to all play together and we can not figure out how to do the bass.
