View Full Version : Blast Beats don't register pedal

I've been having this problem for a little while now. While at first i brushed it off as a calivration issue, after sitting down for 5 hours to try to calibrate the game, it made no diffrence. Here's the situation (for tis example i will use the song B.Y.O.B. by System Of A Down):
When i play any regular part of the song (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Outro) it's fine, I get nearly 100% barring any chokes on my part.
But when i get to those blast beats (That part where the group is screaming 'Where The F*** Are You!?), while my red and yellow pads are lighting up like Xmas trees and registering every note, my pedal will be lucky if it registers even one note.
Here's how i know neither i (or the drum kit, which is the ION kit btw) are at fault:
A: I can play anything else with no dropped notes. Even songs with massive amounts of bass such as Are You Dead Yet or Painkiller.
B: I can get near 100% on the very same song (BYOB) on Guitar Hero World Tour, using the same drumkit. I always get 100% of the blast beats.
C: I have tried an alternate drumkit (and pedal) but nothing does the trick.
I am assuming therefore that the game must be at fault. Can someone please help me find out why? I see guys online getting blast beats like they're nothing on this game, but i can't even do B.Y.O.B. because it won't detect the pedal during those sections...

The game is clearly not at fault, because other people (including myself) can hit those parts just fine.
Either you've got a calibration issue, or you're just not hitting the pedal at the right time. The fact that you can get it in GH:WT is proof of nothing, since that game has a much wider timing window than RB does.

Well usually when there is a pedal+pad note, i always make sure that they both 'detect' at the same time. So i hit the pad at the same time the pedal hits the contact (so to speak). The wierd thing is, i can do any other kind of beat. Anything. Hell, i've beaten Embedded and i can't do this? Doesn't make sense to me...
Btw, i get 100% on Bridge 2a of BYOB at 80% speed. Can't touch it at 100% speed though...

It's you. I also have trouble with that section in GHWT, but other times i'm fine

I have the same issue dude, its all mind games. Its going so fast the signals in your mind are getting all screwed up. Subconsciously you think your hitting it, but your actually not.
You just gotta practice the hell out of it.

I am hitting it, i can play it on any speed in the practice mode, but when i play it 100% all notes, it doesnt detect it. End of story. Also, it's not calibration as the TV my drums are played on is a SDTV. Quite an old one too.
Let me put it this way. On it's own, i can hit the pedal notes, same with the pad notes. If i combine the Yellow pad and Pedal, that works. If i combine the red and Pedal notes, they work fine too. I'm sorry, i am not meaning to sound like an elitist douche (I am fully aware i do sound like one) but i know i am hitting it right.

These 3 players, and many others, can hit those parts fine. Sorry, but since your drumset apparently works just fine, it must be you.

No I hear ya, from the way you worded it, just seemed really similar to my experience so I was quick to jump on it.
Anyway, I'd start closely inspecting the wires of the red, yellow and pedal for any damages. (Bends, pierces, cracks etc.) My friends bass replica suffered the same fate to symptoms you were describing to an unseen bend in the wire, and it took us weeks to figure out what the problem was. Turns out his idiot cat was chewing on the wire. But anyway if their is a hardware problem with your set, its most likely to be in the wire unless your duel wielding hammers as drum sticks. In which case, the wires are replaceable and cheap. Can find em at any radio shack.

No damage on the wires. Pads are fine too. Blue pad a has a bit of an air bubble but that pad isnt used in the blast beats.
Is it at all possible i have a faulty game perhaps? My disc is scratched a bit.
Also to note, i have it installed to Hard Drive. I doubt that would be the cause but i'm just listing everything i can think of.

The disc's condition shouldn't make any difference at all with this, especially if it's installed to the hard drive... the game's not even reading the disc while it runs.
And having the game installed to the hard drive won't affect gameplay in any way.

Update: It's happening on two slower tracks with blast beats: Won't Get Fooled Again and Fire.
But here's the shocker: I can hit them in Lego Rock Band!
If that's not proof i'm doing it right i don't know what is.

WGFA and Fire do not have Blast Beats okay, you need to get your terminology right
I had a similar problem but the opposite way, I couldn't hit the intro rolls in Chiron in Lego RB, but could hit them many times in RB2

One day i will have a decent webcam and prove to you that i am not lying. Everywhere else (Below 100% speed in Practice, Freestyle) it works.
By blast beats, i mean something like the following:
YO/R/YO/R/YO/R/YO/R
O = Pedal
Y & R = Pads
While short, both Fireand WGFA do have these parts in them (although WGFA admittedly spreads out across the rack with it's own, and Fire's 'blast beat' lasts less than 5 seconds. but i noticed every pedal note misfire)
Isn't it in the least bit possible that my copy is bad or something? I'm telling you, any way i can prove that i'm right i will do it (not right now though, it's 7:30PM and i'm not allowed on the drums for the night in case we annoy the neighbours) because i am as sure as anything.

I think thats called alternating, but if it is a problem, rent, borrow o buy a new copy! Or redownload the song

It's kinda hard when the only friends that live near you dislike the game. Also, i have no job and am strapped for cash. :(

And btw, i spent all day working with the calbration today. The only way i could get the pedal to register was to cause all the other songs to stop working at all (due to the track being out of sync with the audio).
I can't see how it is anything other than the hit window being bad. And i've had problems with it before (i.e. on fast strumming parts on guitar/bass).

It's not just one song, its:
BYOB
Prequel To The Sequel
Conquer All
This Is Exile
What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse
And more (i can't recall them atm)
And BYOB is one of my favourite songs anyway. I hate that just because i'm playing on drums i have to avoid these songs or tone down my difficulty just because my game isnt workin right. I shouldn't have to either.
Say what you will about Guitar Hero World Tour, but at least it doesn't need calibrating on an SDTV.

Wow, mbnasir6... quite the rude and incredibly unhelpful attitude there.
Tr1cky: I'd try getting in touch with one of the drummers on Youtube that have FCd that song, and ask them if they had trouble with this, and if so what they did about it.

This man is correct. It's not the equipment nor the game (and David was right...GH:WT has a much larger timing window). You're hands and feet are just out of sync enough for you to be missing things, and from your description it sounds like your foot is lagging just that fraction behind on the really fast parts.
Sorry to say but the only solution is more practice by you.
(Edit: The only thing I can think of that isn't totally you, would be the foot pedal. If you are using the stock Ion pedal, it's crap and may be hindering your ability to depress it fast and accurate enough for the sections you have mentioned. There are some great aftermarket pedals available, and some are fairly cheap.)

Well, in all honesty, i'm planning to get a proper drum trigger and double bass pedals (so i can do Expert Plus in Guitar Hero), the only hitch is getting an adapter of sorts (i.e. Kickbox) so the ION can accept it. Problem is, i found that all this stuff is extremely expensive (average total price seems to level out at £500!)

Okay sorry if I sounded liked a d-ckhead but i'm just trying to say there nothing more you can do
And on ebay (Official RB Store) you can buy the Kickbox RB for around £40 including shipping
Yamaha KP65 for around £60 (Cheaper on eBay)
And double pedals for around £75
I downlaoded BYOB and I didn't have problems,
Prequel To The Sequel
Conquer All
This Is Exile
What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse
All of those songs are extremely fast and may require double pedal, so again, its probably you, I have been able to play the Blasts in WaHNtHaC in freestyle mode, but in the game I fail it

I think it may have been the pedal after all.
Know why?
I just heard a loud snap while playing WGFA and now nothing is coming from my pedal, cept for a rattling sound.

Btw, are you sure double pdals are only £75? When i went looking around in central london, i found many shops that advised me not to go the cheap route, saying the best starting price for double pedals (with a decent durability) should be around £150-200... This is two pedals linked together btw, like these:

I have a video up reviewing the Roadie SP-500 (actually it's the SP-800, I just mislabeled it), which are pretty much identical to the Vex pedals you linked. The only difference is the design on the footboard.

Just watched the vid. Cool, that saves me quite a load of dosh.
Now, considering that my most likely purchase for a trigger will be the Yamaha KP-65 (because it's cheap and it works according to your review) that means:
Pedals: £70
Trigger: £55
Kickbox (including import fee): $82/£52 approx ($57/£37 now cus its on sale but i aint buying it right now)
Total:£177
Still doesn't make the wait any easier... gonna have to wait till August to get them.

i couldn't find it on ebay. Somehow you have...
ebay hates me.
Thing is though, if it's coming off of ebay, my mum will be very unlikely to want to get it, especially if its coming from the US. She is a little paranoid about the website having many scams.
And that looks like a diffrent kickbox, whats the diffrence? Is the one you sent me better?

It's you 100%, the problem is partly RB's timing window also. You have to have rock solid tempo when playing a blast beat, can't waiver. And because RB's timing window gets tighter as notes get more dense, fall off beat and your screwed.
It's not the game.
