View Full Version : Idea in regards to no lyrics/shouty lyrics etc.

I'm not holding this to just songs with no lyrics either, as there are some songs with only one guitar in, and (albiet very few) some with no drums, that would work.

Either way... I think it's obvious that songs with very screamy/shouty lyrics have zero place in the "main" listing of songs (People have to be able to "sing" the main songs clearly, or a huge amount of people will be turned away).

By the same token, when it comes to DLC, the restrictions are off, you can have ANYTHING up there really, because it's not an integral part of the game, if enough people really want Slipknot (Why, I'll never know) then it could be in there, despite having crap... everything (but more empthasis on the horrible to sing vocals in regards to "normal" rock singing, if you catch my drift).

Same goes for instrumentals, it'd piss people off if they released instrumental songs in the main track listing, but for bonus/DLC, who cares? If you want it, you get it, if you don't, you don't.

Stuff I'd love to hear on the game would be something like Beethoven from The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but they're not likely to be in the main game due to a lack of vocals on the tracks they have that are rocky enough, as DLC it'd work.

So what's everyone elses view?

In a nutshell, I'm basically saying, the main game really HAS to be kept to your general rock, not too heavy, nothing with really screamy lyrics, because they have to try and draw in a wide crowd, including the kids who will be begging Mum & Dad for the game and accessories for Christmas.

Once the game's out, then they can go nuts with the DLC and release all sorts of stuff, even if said song has to neglect a particlar instrument, because said song does indeed rock (After all, bands are known for playing instrumentals and such during gigs to give the singer a break).

Shouty music is a black mark upon rock. Letting it be in Rock Band would be disgraceful, especially as its not music. Slipknot, or as I prefer, slipsnot, is rubbish. Let it be in Rock Band and I lose a lot of respect for Harmonix.

Dun get me wrong, I dislike Slipknot as much as the next guy who likes real music... but the fact is there's people who want bands like SoaD, Korn, and that style into the game... which is fair enough, they like it, but the fact is it wouldn't be "fun" to play for the majority 'cause the "singing" isn't actual singing, just a lot of shouting.

Hence putting it up as DLC only as an idea... that way those who desperately want to, can play it, but those of us happy with listening to music with real singers can do so :D.

its not music eh? some of the most incredible musicians are in metal/hardcore/etc bands. if all you know about is slipknot, don't post.

I advise re-reading what I said, I said SLIPKNOT isn't music.

I ALSO said that the music which has singers that scream and shout have no place being in the "lead" songs for Rock Band because they would alienate a large group of people who might buy the game otherwise, and should be left for DLC instead, while the more mainstream type of stuff (and stuff that's better for everyone as an "all rounder") should be placed in the main game.

But hey, why not take something completely out of context to jump on someone eh? If you "really" want to know I listen to a hell of a lot of music, including bands with "screamy/shouty" singers. However I, personally, feel that the three bands I mentioned (Slipknot, Korn, SoaD) lack any real talent, and need to go back and listen to some of the good rock music that's out there.

Please go check out my thread stating why I'd like to see in RB, and then try telling me "all I know about is Slipknot", I think I pretty much nailed a lovely wide range of music with it, that would go for all tastes of music, without completely alienating people who outright can't scream and shout down the microphone.

And yes, in my view, the best musicians ARE in metal... they reside in the form of bands such as Within Temptation, Hammerfall, Edguy, Lauren Harris (that gal rocks live!), among many others.

hehe it is alright..i am sure you will be forgiven, and i agree wholeheartedly with both of you, i'm not sure..being a singer myself...that i would want ANYTHING to do with screaming or anything like that...its not music...i want notes i can sing and lyrics i can say...simple as that...i doubt most singers will appreciate their band playing without them..but as DLC its a great idea...as long as they dont put it in the main game...some DLC would work for just instruments, guitar and voice, drum and voice...ect ect like road trippin by RCHP..it has no drums but is an amazing song...would fit in DLC but not in the main game

'zactly, that way the individual can buy the song... and you could all still jam out, plus if you were essentially having a group game, the singer is bound to want to quickly rest his/her voice at some points (This is assuming ya not all changing around anyway, I can already see me booking a week off and sodding down my mates with everything for a week of rocking out), while the drummer might want a quick break too... this allows you to have said break without the others having to stop at the same time, and you can enjoy watching through the break.

Something else I was thinking... will there be a mic stand available with the mic? and if so... would it be at all possible to rig it up so a guitarist could sing the song while still playing? 'cause if I know the song (Enter Sandman for instance) I wouldn't even need to read the lyrics (and when the green bar appears, it'll be hard to miss the sodding thing on my TV, lol), I'd enjoy playing guitar AND singing at the same time. I tend to do it at the moment on songs I know anyway, so why not in-game too?

I'm assuming it wouldn't really affect the game at all to do that, I'm just thinking that if there's no stand available, it'll be a case of buying a cheap one yourself, or finding a way of rigging it up yourself.

I don't think they are realeasing a mic stnad with the game..but you can always just go buy a real one..they're cheap, because the mic is normal sized it would fit in there, but about singing and playing many people have asked that question and i personally cannot say if its possible in game or not...it would probably be difficult..and if they dont have it you could still sing and play only as two different characters on screen so i don't think that would be a problem

lorddavid
07-22-2007, 05:51 AM
Oh I expect it to be two different characters on screen, just more wondering how easy it'll end up being to do... 'cause I remember 'em saying that the mic would also double as a tambourine (I think... something like that anyway) for the less vocal parts... which would be complete smeg for someone who's in the midst of a guitar solo, lol.

I mean... what would ya do? headbutt the mic?

Phiromos
07-22-2007, 05:52 AM
hahaha there is a thread about that and everyone said they would headbutt the mic...but if you get the RB guitar for guitar solos you don't have to strum...that gives you a free hand to tap the mic

lorddavid

Good point, but only if you have a mic stand... otherwise you just have to slam it into your own head while holding it temporarily :D.

Either way... can't wait for it, I love all these type of games (GH1 was amazing, and I'm now hooked... I'll be buying a 360 solely for this game... lol Even now... I'm going through the harder stuff in GH2 and playing the bass on 'em, just for variety)

Phiromos

yeah i love both games as well ive 5 stard almost all of the songs..not on expert but on hard...im no crazy guitar hero person but i'm alright...i'm so excited for rock band becuase of the singing..i am a singer in real life so i can't wait to sing classics with a whole band with me

lorddavid

Excellent, I pretty much only play on Expert now (only a handful of songs I'll play on Hard regularly... like Jordan & Free Bird (If I actually wish to complete it, tho' I've beaten it twice on expert... and the first time was on quick play... how pissed off was I?!).

I actually find stuff on Easy and medium harder to play than on Expert now, 'cause of the lack of notes, I end up trying to strum non-existent notes, even when I first put GH2 in, I played through it with my mate, but as he plays medium, to unlock it all, we had to play through on medium, he hit every note in the songs he played until about tier 5, while I never once perfected a song thanks to stupid little mistakes. Really annoying that, lol.

Personally I'm really looking forward to the drumming... which is ironic as I can't do that in my room (Kinda hard to sit on your bed and do so... when the drum kit would have to sit on it as well 'cause there's nowhere else to set 'em up, lol), I'd have to set the whole thing up downstairs just for the drums.

It is both my prediction AND preference that Harmonix will eventully release downloadable songs without lyrics or with harsh lyrics, but it will be a long time after they've used their library of quality songs that everyone CAN play. It's the social aspect that sets Rock Band appart from Guitar Hero. Even though you have to pay for it, DLC still creates value for the game, and I believe most people who buy the game will still want fully playable songs.

Oh definitely to begin with, but I'd be shocked if they didn't release a pack of, say, instrumentals after a month or so, and mebbe a pack of the screamy/shouty stuff. They need variety for sure, but that means they do also need to cater for those who like that stuff, but my guess is it'll be more of a rareity than the norm.
