View Full Version : It killed my 360. NOT WORTH IT!

I believe MANUFACTURING DEFECTS and POOR QUALITY MATERIALS are to blame for the problems people are having with the discs that have been shipped out.
The problems caused by my Rock Band disc DO NOT include the red ring of death and are not caused by software glitches/viruses
Bought the Rock Band bundle last night (12/27/07) from Best Buy. Thought I was so lucky having had looked everywhere for it. I just happened to go to the store to buy a gift card for a friend and saw the pile of boxes. Apparently they just got a new shipment. Played for a total of three hours before my game froze mid-song, started again, then began emitting the most terrible noise in the world. EEKKEERREKKEEERRGG!!! I guess I'll send the disk back tomorrow to get a replacement but I won't have a XBOX to play it on. Now NONE of my discs read and they ALL make the SAME noise while spinning in the drive. The sad thing was this game wasn't even a must have for me. I used to play the drums... I had a nice Pearl kit till I had to sell it because I no longer have the space. Thought this game could be fun. I had heard about all the hardware issues people were having but I knew I treated my things nicely and accepted that EA was taking care of their customers. Well what are YOU (EA) going to do about my Xbox? The three hours of enjoyment was not worth the useless pile of $400 sitting on my entertainment center. No matter how you look at it... It just doesn't make sense to buy this game until the defects are fixed.
Obviously this isn't an isolated incident. Why are there so many defective discs? The game was fun to play and I enjoyed every minute of my three hours worth. I'm not trying to tell EA they have a bad game or that they suck for what they are or are not doing. This is the place to post technical support issues. If EA is replacing game discs in huge quantities, as evidenced by a whole support path being dedicated to just defective discs, then others are having the same issues.
Update: I inspected the game disc closely and the label is very noticeably not centered which very easily could have caused an imbalance at high RPM's. What I believe happened is that the unbalanced disc jumped off the drive seat and in some way damaged the disc drive.

Remember kids, when your 360 breaks, it's always completely the fault of the last game that was in it.

I don't mean to sound childish because I'm not a child. It is completely plausible that my 360 decided to take a dump three hours into playing Rock Band and exhibited symptoms that had never occurred before. It could be coincidence and there is no evidence that it wasn't... other than the countless other Rock Band owners who are having disk quality issues exhibiting the same symptoms. It is a frustrating experience not only to drop $170 on a faulty product but then to have that product (equally as plausible as coincidence) cause another $400 dollars in damage.

I'm been playing the living crap out of RB on the 360 since the day it was released, and I have not had a single problem, not to mention that this software is not capable of doing something like that.
This is only plausible if you know absolutely nothing about the relationship between hardware and software.
Your drive failed, and would have failed regardless of what game was in it. That's pretty much it.

Same here DrEvyl. Ive had the RoD and its not the games fault at all. It has to do with the GPU soldering getting loose.

What an utter load of bs by the OP. He obviously knows nothing about programming or hardware. You would have to actually download a harmful program into your 360's operating system to have it effect your 360. You think the company somehow created a virus, installed it only onto your game disk out of the thousands of disks out there, it magically jumped off the disk into your operating system, and that it somehow did not activate until you had played for 3 hours?
Here's a clue....none of the disks work and they all make the same noise...does that mean all the disks have a virus that is "killing" your 360? Common sense would say "Hey, none of the disks are reading, so there is a problem with the 360 not reading disks."
God, I hate it when people try to get something free by trying to blame someone who is not responsible. Almost as bad as the old lady who sued MacDonald's because her coffee was hot...

Read what I'm wrote. I said nothing about a VIRUS or SOFTWARE issues. I'm sure the PROGRAMMING is fine. Seemed to work while I had been playing it. If you read what I am posting about, you would understand that I believe POOR QUALITY MEDIA or MANUFACTURING DEFECTS are to blame for the problems people are having with the disks that have been shipped out. Why else would EA replace game disks in mass quantities? Not because of a VIRUS on the disks.

My friend's 360 got the red rings while playing Gears of war. He didnt go cry to epic about how bad a game they have because of what happened to ONE person.

OP obviously doesn't realize that the RRoD is common and has nothing to do with the game that happens to be played last. He needs to do ***** at Microsoft and not HMX.
BTW OP, where are these posts about 360 RB owners complaining about faulty discs? I've only seen posts about some PS2 discs being faulty.

I obviously do realize that. I never said the RRoD was caused by any of the games being played. I was only saying I felt very lucky that none of the common 360 problems affected me.
MrE: if you type in "disc error" or "disk read error" into the search box at the top of the page you will get pages of posts. Please do so before you reply to this thread.

just did. 28 hits for "disc error" which are not all for 360. Looked at the dates too and it doesn't seem to be as common as you make it sound.
I would exchange your faulty disc so you can play RB when your 360 replacement arrives ;)

Thanks man. I feel like with the somewhat limited quantities on the market there must be enough problems with the discs that EA feels they need to address the issue directly. That definitely is the plan because I was rocking the drums when it went out. :)

I have RB for the PS2 and it did the whole freeze in the middle of a song, make a crazy noise thing and then none of the games worked either. All I did was clean the lense with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip, and that seemed to do the trick. My friend had that happen to her 360 too, and she said she just cleaned it the way I did. Don't ask me how, I have sadly never seen her 360.

Hey, what lens? If it is the disc laser lens inside the machine I wouldn't want to void my warranty by opening the machine up. I don't think I can reach it from the outside. If anyone has experience or advice on cleaning the lens please post it. I have a feeling my problem is more serious than a dirty lens. I think the off-centered label caused an imbalance and threw something off. Thanks for your help though.

Ryn you need help man... If it was the disk that caused the problem, it would have presented itself right away; not 3 hrs later.
Aside from taking the thing apart you can use a lens cleaner that is a cd with brushes.
If that doesn't work... Call Microsoft; they'll fix it for free!
My guess is that it's just the $5.00 optical drive that is bad, and might need replacing.

I agree that I would also think a disc error would show itself immediately but others have been receiving similar errors after they have already played the game longer than three hours.
I have one of those CD's with a brush but I'm not sure it would work with the 360's tray. And yeah I'm lucky I'm still under warranty.

Classic XBOX360 thread: "(NEWEST GAME) BROKE MY 360!"

12-29-2007, 07:56 PM
Wow, you guys really jumped on him, and in the process, made most of yourselves sound like ignorant little children (apologies to those of you who really ARE ignorant little children). Did you only read the thread title and decide not to read his actual post? He's not complaining about the "programming" or "software", he stated it quite clearly that he looked at the disk and it seemed like the label wasn't centered. If a label isn't centered on any kind of optical media (CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, etc...) it can cause an imbalance in the weight of the disk, which may, or may not, cause a problem. And yes, it could happen after 3 hours, if for some reason the disk speed had sped up at that time for some reason.
He's said repeatedly that many many people are having these issues. Yes, it could still be due to the 360 itself considering the wonderful red ring of death that a lot of us have gone through.
My point though, is that you people need to learn to READ AN ENTIRE POST before you jump down and start insulting someone. Just because you're not face to face with him, doesn't give you the right to act like an ignorant S.O.B. His post was very well thought out, and detailed, if you don't agree with it, you can just tell him that and why, constructively. Don't try to increases your e-peen by insulting someone based on a well constructed post. There are plenty of other people you can jump on. If it was a post like "dude, i gut dis game and now meh 360 broke, dis game sux, dun git it", then by all means, eat him alive.
It's people like this that make people get sick of playing games online:

Ok, end rant, I think I'm good now. If you got down this far, sorry for going on and on, some things just get on my nerves.
EDIT: And yes, this is my first post on these forums if you didn't catch that, I was trying to see if anyone else sucks at the game as much as me and my friends do that we can't all play on hard (some of us can, a couple can only do medium though), so we can't really enjoy the game to its completeness.

I work at an EB Games store and the employees and I all play the game. And we usually get together and play as a band for about six hours plus, when free time is allotted. I can honestly say we have never had a problem with the game at all (save for the instruments breaking). Your 360 burning out isn't because of the game, but the game did help it. Since Rock Band is such a huge game, the 360 is working to its fullest to process all the information on the disc. Basically, the red ring occurs when the GPU overheats and the soldering becomes loose. Easily enough, Microsoft addressed this issue and now gaurentee your system for 3 years free of charge (providing it's the 3 Red Rings). The only other issue I can think of would be if your game disc has a perfect circle scratch on the bottom side. This happens when the 360 is spinning a disc and the 360 is moved, bumped, shaked, etc. The laser gets knocked out of alignment and scratches your disc. I'm a huge rhythm gamer so I talk to tons of people about Rock Band and none of them have complained about the disc not working or about their 360 crapping out while playing the game. I'm not in any way saying you are wrong about what you said. I'm just saying there's a simple fix to get your 360 fixed through Microsoft and have Harmonix send you a new disc to use. It sucks you will be out of games for about a month because Microsoft is so far backed up on their red ring fixes, but sadly that's the best way to go. Atleast it is all free.

yea... similar thing happened to me i got the red ring of death after i tried playing rockband i hve had my 360 since the same year it came out and now i get the ring of death... at first i thought it was just cuz i hooked up the controllers wrong (using the thing that plugs in to charge were u get extra usb ports) but it came with no manuel to hook it all together and my guitar wasnt turning on so i was trying to make sure it had good batteries in it but when i restarted my console i got the ring of death and now i gotta wait 4 weeks cuz i gotta send my xbox 360 in to get fixed..

just to note a friend of mine's xbox broke the first time he put rock band in. I said he was being silly so i tried his disc in mine. although mine didnt break it wouldnt read the disc at all (odd because there seriously appeared to be no scratches on the bottom) maybe it was ruined by the laser when the xbox broke..i dunno much about the hardware... just sharing that tidbit
my rockband copy works fine except for the overdrive on the guitar wont activate at all by tilting =\

yeah, I had an issue with my first rock band guitar where it didn't register overdrive by tilting, nor did the strum bar work. I sent that back and got another, the tilt still didn't work, tried a third time, finally got a guitar that seems to be working nicely....bleh

I would normally agree (may still) that a disc should not have any effect on the system itself. It defies all logic in my mind, however this same incident just presented itself to me as well. however i did not get "red rings" it would just lock up, and now with all games it just locks up. I got rock band before i got my xbox even. and have played many many hours before this incident. it is probably a heat issue like others have said and is not by fault of the disc. I just wanted to make sure th OP knows that he isn't the only one that has had this happen. Also shorty after this happened a friend of mine said that he knows a few friends of his that had the same thing happen while playing rock band... can't vouch for them but it DID happen to me. I have contacted micro$oft for a repair... now time to wait and i had just repaired my broken drum pedal too...
