I found a what I think is a good deal on a throne and mic stand, but it's still $51 for both with shipping. Anyone find anything cheaper?

Locally the cheapest throne was $37.95 and the cheapest Mic stand was $19.99 but I had to buy the additional thing that screws into the top that holds the mic. I just want to get the best price on these items. :)

THANKS! There's some cheap thrones there.

Next question.. is cheap really the way to go? I mean, they have some for $19.99... now I am wondering if my frugalness will be a mistake on something like this? I wouldn't want it to collapse under me or someone else, or be uncomfortable. :s

I looked around and the best deal was $30 for the mic stand (complete) and $33 for drum throne, I got them both at the Guitar Center.

This drum throne is solid and well built.

Is the Guitar Center a local place to you, or online?

Is there something I should look for in these?

I certainly hope you haven't ordered that yet, and get a chance to read this note before you do.

The mic stand linked there is probably just fine, you never put any stress on a mic stand, so the cheapest available will do.

But as the for the drum throne, just remember that you get what you pay for. Those $20 thrones are very uncomfortable even after a very short time. And over the years, I've had 2 break under me while I was playing. One snapped right in the middle of the stem where one of the pairs of height-adjustment holes are, and the other did the same thing, but lower on one of the legs.

And no, I'm not obese, I'm 6'1, 185. :p

I've been playing drums for over 16 years, so I've gone through quite a few different thrones. Spend the extra 15 or 20 to get a better quality, more comfortable throne. Your rear will thank you for it :)

Drum thrones are definitely one area where you get what you pay for. I'm sure you could get a folding chair that was as comfortable as the cheapie thrones.

Thanks to you both. I don't want junk, but would like to have something affordable since I just spent $1500 on Christmas, I would like to wait awhile before shelling out much more. But I also think we could wait a few months and buy something better otherwise I would hate to toss the junk and buy more. So do let me know how the ones above work out, might be good enough for the kids.

I was looking at Walmart today for some generic stools. I'll keep looking around. Right now they have a big office chair they are using, and make a makeshift mic stand. I just was looking for something affordable to get now, but I might wait and get something better later.

you guys should try your local pawn shop they usually have lots of musical related stuff at a good price(in nyc at least).

I actually thought about checking out pawn shops (never been to one until about 2 weeks ago) and the thrift stores. I think I would have a better time finding what I want at pawn shops though and in this town there is no shortage of them!

I would say don't go cheap, I have a drum throne I paid about $40 for and it is solid (Pearl brand). It will stand up for a long time to come. I spent $20 on a boom mic stand and it will more than suit my purposes (plus $2 for the mic clip that is a rubber material so it will work for a lot of mic sizes).

I checked out a few cheaper thrones before I went with the $40 one and they just looked and felt cheap, I didn't think they would last.

Got both items at my local music supply store and they beat out the pricing of anyone online when you include shipping.

Yeh, I second the opinion of *NOT* getting a cheapo drum throne. $40-$60 sounds like a decent range if you're only using it for RB. Since my wife doesn't have an office chair, we don't have a designated RB drum throne, AND the fact that I do real life gigs about once a month, I'm looking into getting this:

$140 but I too have to wait a bit...I'm forcing myself to clean up from all these holiday parties before I go splurging again ;) Here we're just using some beatup IKEA chair:

Don't give us your opinion when it arrives. Wait till you've sat on it for 3 hours straight, and THEN give us your opinion ;)

And to answer the previous question, yes the $20 ones would be fine for little kids, as they usually don't weigh very much. But it'll still be uncomfortable for them too.

My suggestion for any hardware you want: Mic stand, throne, guitar stand, different drum sticks... is to just go to a local pawn shop, you can usually find everything you need at one for a lot cheaper than anywhere new. I got a throne, mic stand, and guitar stand for around $30.00... and they're not exactly cheap construction ;)

with thrones, you do get what you pay for. I bought a Pearl D-75, which I've heard is the best bang for your buck. I got ripped off up here in Canada, I'm sure, as I bought it brand new at the local music store and all the fun stuff (music, electronics, etc) is way overpriced up here, but even so I could afford it so I went with it.

Btw, I play guitar and I NEVER buy anything from the local music store. Ebay, Craigslist, Gear forums, whatever, are the way to go. Being as I have NO drum experience and didn't have a clue, I ran to the music store. I spent about $75 on mine, and I'm sure you yanks can get it for about $50-60.

Guitar Center is a ripoff as well, and from most accounts, the folks working there have little to no idea what you would need (due to the high turnover rate).

Anyhow, the D-75 is solid, sturdy, professional, and comfy. Highly recommended, search for it on one of the above mentioned websites. You'll find it for cheaper than the price I mentioned.

Skip the mic stand for now and just drop $40-$50 on a better quality throne. It is far more necessary than a mic stand and your ass will thank you later.

Yep, the D-75 is a pretty good throne, it's what I started out with years ago, and you can find it online for around $60.

I upgraded a few years ago to a nice really cushy Pork Pie throne, basically this one, but solid black:

Will do. I understand that it probably won't be the Pope's toilet seat comfy but that's just a reason to let someone else play drums a while ;)

Thanks for all the info!

I am going to hit up the pawn shops Wednesday and see what I can find. If I can't find one there, I'll probably get the $36 one from the music shop here. The mic stand isn't AS important, but one of my girls wants to play guitar and sing, so need a stand for that. :s

OH my! It IS a small world!

You know a year before we finally made it out here (we tried for 2.5 years) my dad's girlfriend met a guy at her work that was moving to CA from this area (Irwin to be exact) and then once I got to Greeneville, I met the friends sister on the Greeneville forum!

Very very small world. We love it here in Greeneville, it's everything we ever wanted, rednecks and all. (We're CA rednecks, so we fit in nicely here).

Dirt Cheap way. Buy a 50 cent hook at home depot and hand you mic from the ceiling. You can sing like lemmy.
