No of course you don't have to use the hub. I actually never do, since I have 3 free USB ports on my 360 (2 on the front, one on the HD-DVD player).

I have never used mine either. Drums and Strat are connected in the front. Mic is connected to my HD DVD add-on drive along with my Camera. If I ever need to plug in a second Strat, I will just unplug the Camera.
