LOL
The second video scored high enough to rank #23 on XboxLive. And yes, I made the vocalist character look as much like myself as I could.

Okay, I didn't like you until just now. But that's just pretty funny. You're great, but you're such a jerk about it. I think that's what a lot of people don't like about you. :P Not sure how I suddenly got a sense of humor about this, I think it was my fond memories of my metal kazoo in high school. I should pull it out and see how well I can rank. :D

I'm not sure exactly where the pot stirring is here. It's some slovenly guy beating a song with a kazoo, big deal.... The 10 minute pretentious diatribe about why Bon Jovi is pretentious and cheesy was a nice touch, though ironic... now go clean something.

Great dude, you found a way to beat the system. Good job...maybe you'll get into the history books next to the guy who cured polio or something. Is that a dead horse I smell?
But most of all, how can anyone be that self congratulatory/self righteous playing Rock Band on what looks to be a 17" monitor?
Wow, the butthurt is strong in these two. LOL Probably Bon Jovi fans.
Dudes... go back and read the first post again... and if you stick around maybe I will do another video on how not to be so damned uptight.

Hardly...
I was in the most pit at a Slayer concert back in the early 90s when Seasons in the Abyss came out. I've also seen GWAR, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Testament, Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax...and have been to more concerts than you can count on twenty arms and legs....
Wow, really? Can I touch you? Maybe some of that infinite coolness will rub off on me and I won't be such a dork any more.
It really boils down to the self-righteousness that's in your videos. It's not just 'being nutty' or 'just being funny' when you're giving the finger to Harmonix who owns this site and telling them to eff off....and Great, you don't like Bon Jovi...then please just dont play Dead or Alive and move on.
Yeah, kinda like... if my videos bother you that much, just move on to the next thread, don't click on them, put me on your ignore list, save your uptight complaining for someone who actually gives a flying crap whether you like them or not, blah blah blah, because you obviously don't get them. Oh wait, that would be following your own advice, we can't have any of that.
I enjoy making fun of Bon Jovi more than not playing the song, and so you're just gonna have to get over it, man. It's my $170, and if I wanna light it on fire or play it by farting into the microphone, that's my perogative. You go do what you want with yours, that's the beauty of freedom of choice.
You're not going to change anyone's minds of people who DO like Bon Jovi.
I don't believe that was the point of the video. I don't really care who likes Bon Jovi.
Do you hate it so much that we're going to see four more videos about the bands you don't like and how Rock Band sucks?
You'd have to be ******ed to think that I don't like playing Rock Band. I mean seriously, who would spend weeks on end putting in hour after hour doing something they didn't like?
It's pretty clear that you're just humor-impaired, and don't get it... and I'm gonna keep on making them the same way.
Then don't play Rock Band...there's an entirely other game and forum you could be participating in.
Yeah, but I'd rather stay here and annoy you.
Maybe I'll have to flip the finger and tell YOU to f___ off in the next one. Cuz seriously... lighten up, Francis. It's a freakin joke.
Take that stick outta yer butt and repeat after me:

Bummer. I guess I'll have to put on Fall Out Boy and start cutting myself.
You apparently care enough to keep watching my videos and replying to threads about them, though, so I'm gonna have to raise the BS flag there. You know you love them.
But I do think giving Harmonix the middle finger in your first video was pretty uncalled for.
This apparently has left a lasting impression on you to still be talking about it almost a weeks later. I'm sure that (like me) they don't really care, and realize that it's satire.
That one video has over 4100 views in a week.. someone apparently found it entertaining. Every 20 seconds, someone is watching my ugly old mug play Rock Band. How do you like them apples?

I now know the dangers of accidentally leaving myself signed in at my brother's house...
Sorry about the comments man. My nephew thought it would be okay to use my account to reply to people on this forum. I brought Rock Band to my brother's last night and showed him the community site and left my account signed on there.
I got a weird email from him asking me about bands I've seen in concert and music that I liked and when I got home this evening, I had emails about posts that I had never made...then I put two and two together.
Let's just say he's gotten his internet privledges taken away for a month (I asked my brother if we could video his reaction and put it up on You Tube....lol). He's kind of at that "I'm better than everyone else" snob stage.
I've deleted all the posts on here that he made.

Now that I've actually had a chance to look at your two new videos...
I had your same attitude about Bon Jovi. The whole "Cowboy" thing from a band from New Jersey was kinda lame.
I used to think Dead or Alive was kind of cheesy too...but man, its so fun to play. That song is a great example of a perfect "Rock Band Song." Every part is fun to play. The guitar part at the beginning is a good way to learn your hammer-on's an pull-offs. The drum part is a great bass-pedal learning part and the vocals are just easy enough, but fun enough to put some soul into it.
It's also a song most people know....and if you have all four parts playing, it's no longer Bon Jovi, but your band that's playing. :)
I think Rock Band and Guitar Hero is like that. You might not like a song at first, but after you've mastered it, it becomes something more than just a song.
I agree with the attitude that people are talking about. Confidence means not having to give the finger and an eff-you to people before they've even said anything. Confidence isn't going, "I know I'm going to get all kinds of flack for this....so here's some payback in advance..."
What if people weren't really going to give you flack at all? All you've done is annoy those who would have ordinarily said, "Hey, thats funny...how about singing using a slide whistle next time?"
It's like an up and coming comedian who is really entertaining his audience ending what would have been his successful evening with, "And for those of you who hated my show tonight, eff off!" and walking off the stage. :)
Confidence is also ignoring flame bait comments...and not using them as fodder for your next video. All that looks like is that the real reason you're making videos is to give people the bird...and that the music experiments are just a ruse for that.
Just my .02
Now, why not make up your own words to Dead or Alive and see if you can get 5 starts singing your version?

It's also a song most people know....and if you have all four parts playing, it's no longer Bon Jovi, but your band that's playing. :)
I don't care how you played it, I'd always think it was cheezy. The only reason I would give to say it's a "perfect" Rock Band song is that a lot of people really like this swill, why I don't know.
I'm gonna say the second song I did (Dani California) is the more "fun" song of the two for a band setting... For one, you got a bass player that can actually play and his part in that song is cool as hell (Flea makes Bon Jovi's bassist look like he's playing with a boxing glove on this left hand), you got a vocal part that is not all that tough pitch wise and fun to sing rhythmically, you got a drum part that has a really fun groove (seriously fun, even.. I play this song over and over on drums just because I love that groove), and the guitar part is fun as well, and has a nice subtle tribute to Jimi Hendrix in it... much better choice..
But most of the sheeple out there like that Bon Jovi crap and can't appreciate good musicianship over good marketing....
Like I said in my video, I saw these guys live around the "Slippery When Wet" timeframe, and it had to be the cheeziest, and lamest performance I'd ever seen a band do, and still stands to this day with that title (but aaaah, what we'll do for some poon, huh?). The part where at the end of each song they posed for all the cameras in the front row was ESPECIALLY cheezy, and someone needs to tell John he doesn't really know how to play the harmonica and it sounds terrible. I went into the show as a mild fan, walked out of the show saying to myself "Man, these guys really blow".
I think Rock Band and Guitar Hero is like that. You might not like a song at first, but after you've mastered it, it becomes something more than just a song.
Yes, it becomes evil incarnate. If I don't like it at first, I'll really not like it by the time I finish it. That song "Maps" makes me want to stab people in the eye.
I agree with the attitude that people are talking about. Confidence means not having to give the finger and an eff-you to people before they've even said anything. Confidence isn't going, "I know I'm going to get all kinds of flack for this....so here's some payback in advance..."
Confidence also means deciding for yourself how to make your videos, and not caring whether someone is put off by what you're doing. As I said, I personaly would find doing videos that were JUST me playing Rock Band and being serious.. or just doing this whitebread PC version of my current videos.. that wouldn't be a lot of fun for me. Maybe I want to do them the way they are currently. Confidence also means having the balls to intentionally alienate some people off just to use their "flack" as fodder for the next video.
It's not "payback in advance".. it's.. "Who can I get riled up over this one..." "Who would be the funniest person to lambaste in the next video?" "What contraversy can I create here?"
And see, it works... I got about 6000 views and multiple threads with hundreds of posts in them. Confidence also means knowing what you're doing and sticking with it regardless of the "advice" of people who think they know how to make it better.
What if people weren't really going to give you flack at all? All you've done is annoy those who would have ordinarily said, "Hey, thats funny...how about singing using a slide whistle next time?"
So in other words you're asking.. What if I did some really boring videos?
It's like an up and coming comedian who is really entertaining his audience ending what would have been his successful evening with, "And for those of you who hated my show tonight, eff off!" and walking off the stage. :)
You've obviously never seen any of Denis Leary's early material.
Confidence is also ignoring flame bait comments...and not using them as fodder for your next video. All that looks like is that the real reason you're making videos is to give people the bird...and that the music experiments are just a ruse for that.

Thanks for the lecture on "confidence", but to be perfectly honest, if I wasn't confident I wouldn't be making videos of myself acting like a complete dork and putting them on the internet. It's kinda like all the people who told Howard Stern that he shouldn't do his radio show a particular way... he ignored them and did what he wanted, and look where it got him.
Now, why not make up your own words to Dead or Alive and see if you can get 5 starts singing your version?
Because I don't think I could make it any cheezier than it already is. Every time I hear "I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all" I think to myself "no John, it was only 999,999"... and that whole thing about "walking the streets with a loaded 6-string on your back" is so pretentiously cheezy J.L. Kraft wanted to sue them for stealing their recipe.
Although I did have the idea to make a video of me singing a song and just singing whatever random word popped into my head... and I wouldn't wanna do that to Bon Jovi, because I'd do really vulgar stuff to that one.

You intentionally alienate people? Do you have many friends?
I knew someone once who always thought his opinion was fact and whenever someone argued with him, he would just walk away and blame them for being ignorant or having bad taste. Constantly loses his jobs when he argues with his bosses...one time even refusing to do his yearly review "on principal." Right now he's living with his mom at 43 years old and has very few friends and still thinks everyone else is to blame.
I own the Ref and know who Denis Leary is...I've seen many of his HBO specials way back when...Except Denis Leary actually had something to say and most of it was based on common sense...and his act was that he was angry, not smug. I don't think Denis Leary would base his success on how many You Tube views he got either.
I now see what my nephew was saying. All you really want is attention. It's not about the videos you post....it's about how many views you can get on You Tube...
Good luck in your conquest. I'm stepping out of this.

You intentionally alienate people?
Oh yes, I do.
Do you have many friends?
I have my share, can't say I feel lacking in that department. My friends have been laughing their asses off to these videos, that's pretty much why I'm doing them.
Well, I have a really good job, plenty of friends, I own my own house and I have 3 nice cars, so I think I'm doing alright.
I'm not sure what opinion I'm presenting as fact, either... other than that I believe it's easier to get a higher score through "hoover" or playing kazoo than it is to actually sing it, and I'm pretty confident that I've backed up that opinion pretty solidly with real live evidence.
I own the Ref and know who Denis Leary is...I've seen many of his HBO specials way back when...Except Denis Leary actually had something to say and most of it was based on common sense...and his act was that he was angry, not smug. I don't think Denis Leary would base his success on how many You Tube views he got either.
In today's environment.. sure he would. More views = bigger audience.
One of the first things Denis Leary used to do when he walked out on stage is start pointing at people in the audience and flip them off saying "F___ you, and f___ you, and f___ you, and ESPECIALLY f___ you."
I really don't know what I'm doing that is "smug"... about the only thing I can think of there is that in the one video I got an insanely high score and was pretty happy about it. I'm sure you would be equally happy to kick your previous high score in the nuts on camera. So if you're saying that I should curb my enthusiasm over a job well done so that others who might not have scored as high won't feel like I'm rubbing it in their face, well... that's just not going to happen.
I now see what my nephew was saying. All you really want is attention. It's not about the videos you post....it's about how many views you can get on You Tube...
Wow, kid sounds like a real rocket scientist there. Maybe your he could explain what purpose there would be in putting videos up on YouTube and NOT trying to get people to watch them.

I think there's a difference between being funny and trying really hard to be funny. I think your attempts at deprecating humor just come across as contrived. And makes you look petty. Again, you seem like a cool guy, but trying to bait people to get fodder for your next video...you come across insincere is all.
You can be funny and interesting without having to try to be "f-you, I'm badass you losers". That is so junior high, and it does seem beneath you. I agree that just doing straight up videos would be boring. But I thought, for instance, that your whole idea of doing kazoo was fun in and of itself. A simple intro about it would have gotten our interest, and this thread would have been more focused on what a fun and great video this is, rather than us being distracted by your contrived pre-rants to anyone who may not like your video later.
And Hanover, your description of what makes someone "cool" and confident is SPOT ON. I don't consider intentionally alienating people for your own amusement in the least "confident". Again, it smacks of 13 year old politics. And I would not compare what I saw in this video to the genius of Denis Leary, for sure...

Every post the guy makes and every video he publishes gets mass amounts of hits... I'd say he's doing something right. (or wrong, either way.. ) he makes a valid point when he says it'd be stupid to put something up on the internet and NOT want people to view it.
Though, I'd like to offer a personal opinion to counter his assessment of Bon Jovi.
You look at any other million-selling band of that era and you'll see just as much "cheese". (well not ANY, but any of the glam genre, to be sure) I mean "Unskinny Bop" and "Smokin' In The Boys Room" aren't exactly songs worthy of admission into the lyricist's hall of fame.
However, at least Bon Jovi went on to make the soundtrack to Young Guns II, which was, IMO very deep and meaningful.
No matter what, Bon Jovi made more money than Emily Dickenson.

Well, first of all "Smokin' In The Boy's Room" is a Brownsville Station song that was released in 1973. Motley Crue didn't write it, they just covered it. "Martian Boogie" is probably the other track they're most known for, and that song is awesome.. some great guitar playing.
You'll note that I specifically mentioned what I termed as "80's Butt Rock"... definitely one of my least favorite styles. Bon Jovi just struck a special place of suckage in my opinion because of their live show.
There's a lot of bands out there that had huge albums in the same time frame that aren't of that genre, though. AC/DC comes to mind right off the bat.. Rush had several really big albums, Clapton put out some really awesome material, Queensryche, Joe Satriani, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy... many many more.. and there's a lot of good stuff from that era that was much less cheezy... and some of that material is definitely RB worthy.
No matter what, Bon Jovi made more money than Emily Dickenson.
Because as we know, the amount of cash generated from album sales is the surest sign of artist merit. Makes me wonder why we're not playing Michael Jackson songs in RB and driving air-cooled VW Beetles.

Well, when you do your videos, now you have some great ideas on how to do them.. unfortunately, I will continue to do my videos my way. If people aren't satisfied with the way they're done, they certainly don't have to watch them. You can't please everyone, and I'm not going to try to... no matter what I do, someone will think I did it wrong. You're entitled to think anyone you want about them, or about me personally, I really don't care. It's not going to change my opinions on which method is the right way to make one of my videos.
So if you'd like them done a certain way, you're more than welcome to pick up a camera and make some of your own, I think YouTube will let just about anyone post stuff.
Thanks.

In a consumer based society, yes.. album sales are incredibly indicative of "Artist Merit". There's no finite guage of "how good music is". You can't measure "how good music is" through mathematical computation. It's called "opinion" and "preference". Which is why the world has just as many Vanilla Ices and Avril Lavignes as it does Jimmy Hendrixs and Les Pauls. Accessibility will always be the driving force in the business of music.
As I've said before, I can certainly respect the opinion of someone who dislikes anything, it's a personal preference.
However, when you present your "debate" of why "they suck" in such long winded terms and constantly need to "defend" it; you no longer appear to be expressing an opinion. You appear haughty and pretentious and on a high horse with the unspoken innuendo of "anyone who DOES like this must be stupid."
So suggesting that because Bon Jovi has legions of fans that we should be playing Michael Jackson in Rock Band is not only nonsensical, but smacks of insult and drivel.
However, I think that Michael Jackson has plenty of tunes that would be great for Rock Band. Slash played guitar for MJ, afterall.
I'll leave you to compose your six paragraph diatribe on how your opinion has more merit than anyone else's because you attended a live show, which dictates that Bon Jovi must, in factuality, suck.

I didn't realize we were counting words / paragraphs here, but if we are you're not very good at it and should probably take a look at your own posts there, buddy..... which kinda explains a lot, but I digress.
The point of being on a message board is to discuss things... if I get the impression you didn't understand what I was saying previously, I'll reiterate it in different terms in the attempt to clear up any confusion. I could not personally care less whether someone else likes or dislikes Bon Jovi, I am simply stating why *I* don't, and giving information regarding what led me to that conclusion...
What you do with that information is entirely up to you, and not really my concern. If someone here is that easily swayed, well.. that's not really my problem.
And Bon Jovi most definitely does suck donkey balls. LOL

Where are the videos of you playing with a band?
There aren't any, at least not that I have.... There's enough recordings around there, though. And there is a video on my YouTube profile of me pulling a guitar out for the first time in 9 years and playing a song or two, that's the best I can do. I'd have to rehearse to play some of the harder songs, and I'm really not that into playing guitar any more to devote that kind of effort.
I've changed instruments since, now I'm a drummer... and before the year is out, there will most definitely be videos of me playing drums in a band.
You know, other people. Who aren't on the internet.
People don't come to my house because I live 40 miles from civilization out in a little tiny town... and I don't know anyone personally who can play the game on a level higher than medium... so I don't video it.
Why you're so concerned with my personal life is beyond me. It's probably a case that you feel bad about yourself because I'm doing things you can't do, and so you have to imagine me as some sort of loser living with his mom in order to up your own self-esteem.

You'd be sadly disappointed there. Not only would you have to bring your own pizza rolls, but you'd have to make them yourself - and my mom lives 300 miles away. I always sound like I have a cold... I have major sinus problems. I mentioned earlier that is why I stopped singing professionally, I can't hold my voice together long enough to do a 2 or 3 night a week gig schedule. You know, after seeing your videos, I couldn't help but think that I knew you from somewhere, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. Then I saw your little South Park avatar there and it came to me...I DO know you!!!
