Will we ever be able to download a little bit more mature songs such as some Korn / In Flames / Trivium.
I would really enjoy playing some Heavy Metal, but I guess the limitations would be the lyrics because of kids, but I had an idea.
What if each download had a certain age limitation to it, so say one song needed the user to be the age of XX, If i'm not mistaken Xbox Live keeps track of the users age, and so, they could easily populate a list of songs based on the users account.
This would keep everyone happy, the older crowd would have access to more songs they are wanting.
What do you guys think?

I could see Parental Advisory warnings or even Harmonix self-rating their songs under the ESRB's watch.

I agree that it would be nice to have more mature songs, although this could in the eyes of the game creators limit the audience who would be able to buy and play these songs, and in doing this may not be as good of a choice for DLC as songs that do not contain explicit lyrics or songs that are censored, since not everyone would have access to them.
In the past songs with harsher lyrics have been edited, I assume that for the most part versions that would be heard on the radio is the kind of songs that will appear in rockband, as to keep the availability of songs to everyone. With people actaully having to read and sing the lyrics I think this will happen even more so.

Edits are the way of the Harmonix past.
Remember Laid to Rest and FTK? Heck even Cherry Lips from Frequency was edited. And that was a master.

I'll be honest, I don't see "edited" lyrics really being possible here. What with singing being involved... 'cause if you know the lyrics, you'll likely sing the swearing anyway, and potentially knacker up your "run" so to speak, purely because they had to do some in-house editing.
I'd rather just see mature songs in with age specific stuff on 'em... or just not in at all.

I agree that one way or another this issue needs to be addressed - mostly because of the promise of full album DLC. I don't mind having the songs edited - but a lot of great rock albums (especially ones from the last 10-15 years) will not be possible without either editing lyrics or allowing for parental advisory DLC or rated M (in the VG world).

Korn is mature?
I want mature music that is mature for reasons other then swearing.
Complicated Freeform jazz, or some other such nonsense.

"Game experience may change during online play" That's all you have to say. You can get away with an "E" on the package, but have more "mature" downloadable songs. At least I think that's how it would work

ok, here's what Harmonix could do...
Since xbox live keeps track of age and stuff... they could release an edited version and an unedited version...
This would consist of fully programming the notes in the unedited version, then simply changing the actual track you hear to the edited version, and changing up the vocal programming a little to not have the curses... it'd take a small amount of effort...
But, see, the thing they could do is... if you buy either the edited version, or the unedited, you're actually getting the rights to download both versions with one purchace...
But you could only download unedited if you were past the required xbox live age... This keeps the age range wide... and it makes sense because it'll keep younger gamers who weren't able to get the unedited versions previously, coming back to the game years down the road...

I cant believe a game with a T rating has to censor so much. Look at Police Truck on GH: Rocks the 80s. It changed drunks to punks, ass to butt, and beer to gear? Its insane.
And JimNasium has the right idea. An age limit would be good on some songs.

Usually maturity is associated with higher age , and I don't think there are many In flames fans in the retirement home >_>;

maturity and age have almost NOTHING to do with each other, and I hate how society and the media make it seem that way...

oh man, the Dead Kennedies ROCK...

and what's so mature about them??
i think bad language makes the music more IMmature than anything really.
using smart, and clever lyrics with the music, rather than dropping the f-bomb means alot more to me in respect for the artist in my eyes.

If they use it constantly, I don't really like it. But now and then it's for effect, or whatever. There are other songs that don't swear but have mature CONTENT [i.e. police truck, they said shiat but they actually censored DRUNKS and beer.]

It is a fact that a lot of gamers are over 18. And there are some parents who don’t care what there kids listen to. That being the case maybe they should make the more "adult" songs so you can unlock them through a registration at the RB web-site or something that makes you show your age. Like a pass key sold at a GameStop or something that you need to buy with an ID. It wouldn’t be perfect but still don’t punish us because there are a few angry moms out there. I am 21 I can prove it don’t treat me like I'm 12.

I noticed that if you look at the censored lyrics as a whole you will notice that the changes in the words actually change the meaning of the song somewhat.
Which I would assume was their point, maybe they thought it was offensive to have Police Officers being super dicks to everyone so they downgraded them to normal dicks.

I don't want an age limit. That would make it nearly impossible for me to play certain songs I listen to anyway just because I'm 14. That'd be ridiculous. IDK how to solve to problem though, maybe have age restriction, but the ability for parents to allow mature songs.

I just have to say that I was sorely disappointed with DK's Police Truck being slashed and hacked like it was. I can remember listening to that song (way back in the day) and thinking, "Wow, that is some statement here!" To me, what was being said in the song was more important than what was being sung. That said, the lyrics change for GH2E:RT80s DID change the message of the song. The police beating up drunks and violently sodomizing prostitutes is much more effective than the drivel put out in E:RT80s. If the RT80s version was the first time I heard that song, I would have thought that DK was a joke. The fact that their songs were about the abuse of power and the rights of people (particularly the freedom of expression) and how they are suppressed - I find it quite chilling to have heard that version. Perhaps Jello was right after all... =(

Any easy fix to mature songs is to have them for DLC. If the songs are flagged as MATURE they could create a filter that only allowed boxes who parental settings were off to download them. If parents are policing their kids the way they should be...problem solved. I feel however that I recall hearing explicit lyrics in some GH songs already for GH 1 and 2....my mistake?

Ahah, **** that. What'd really serve well would be some GWAR.
If you've ever heard Womb With A View or..hell, about 90% of their work in general, you'd know it definitely belongs in games like this.
Of course, the ESRB would eat Harmonix alive.

That tag only refers to "You might meet people on the internet. They won't necessarily act like the rating on this game suggests." So, if HMX puts out a "parental advisory" song, they are changing the rating of the game, not some uncontrollable person on the internet.
I am interested to see how this would be regulated, and who by. Would DLC get individually rated by the ESRB? Would they retroactively rate the game higher? Would they simply put "Parental Advisory" on DLC and be done with it? Interested to see the results of that.

No. No GWAR... please... i beg you... I'd rather take listening to Trivium looped for 5 hours than have to play something like Gor Gor or Pre-Skool Prostitute... :(
imho, i hate on them.

I've been petitioning for "G@y Bar" by Electric Six because it would be perfect for the game. It's such an upbeat, fun, silly, song with a super-catchy guitar riff. It would be soooo much fun to play, and is hardly "mature" or graphic. Yet, I fear just being called G@y Bar might scare Harmonix away, which is a shame. Check it out on youtube and see what I mean.
Edit: I guess it's mature enough that the title gets censored by the board :P

But isn't this song just a novelty song?... i could see Harmonix doing a novelty collection dlc, but I don't know if I'd want to sing this aloud around anyone... Well except, maybe, in the g@y bar! =DD

what about Def Lepard's Pour some sugar on me? It In My opinion WONT be dlc because of its messege. I think that if you and this has been said put a explicit content warning or mack it unavalible to the younger ages it would be fine. thats my 2 cents.

That's not any worse than Cherry Pie, is it? Just innuendos and such, right?
Is there some sort of rating system on DLC? I'm pretty sure Harmonix doesn't want what's on the disc being higher than "Teen", but I don't see why they should avoid songs if they can rate the DLC.

you can't edit the classics. you just can't.
it's unethical.
it's immoral.
it's just downright insane.
that's what i think anyway.
i think thats the idea that my local radio station has.
everytime i hear who are you by the who, they always play the unedited version.

I know they can make two versions of the game. A game for people under 16 that has nothing but The Wiggles and Jimmy Buffet. Then there is the mature game that has all the great songs unedited for us adults and mature teenagers. Or games could go back to having no ratings systems and let the parents do their jobs and check what their children are listening to, Playing or watching. There are certain songs I won't listen to around my son(two years old) that would have no problem letting him listen to when he is old enough to understand right from wrong and be able to comprehend any answers to the questions that he might ask me.
P.S The Wiggles rock! If they had downloadable content for the Wiggles I would buy it in a second. Just to see my sons eyes light up when he hears the Wiggles on dads new game would make my year.

I support mature songs with DLC, but not on the disc, which would heighten the ESRB rating and lower sales.

I haven't read this whole thread but I think mature songs won't happen anytime soon. I don't care one way or the other. Look what is happening in gaming right now. I think it's 'Man Hunt II' that is not getting released because of it's ratings. I don't see a developer like HMX that is trying to make a family style game releasing ESRB high rated songs. There really is no way to stop under age people getting them. So, why bother trying?

Given the issues with third party patches to Oblivion and GTA:San Andreas that resulted in both companies having to change their ESRB ratings, I would think that any company releasing their own content that changes the game's rating would cause the same problems.
The situation isn't exactly the same... In the previous cases the higher-rated content already existed on the original disc and was "unlocked" with a patch. But, I'd bet on angry parents' ability to sway the ERSB over HMX any day.

RB might be an E rating, though. Because of the simple fact that you have a great deal of 10 yr. old kids havin their parents buy the game. And with the mic..........

Doesn't mean it will get an E rating. It will all depend on the rest of the song choices. I'm betting it will be E10+ or T, probably T.
