Not true you can play bass in quickplay solo mode.

can you explain this further? I haven't seen the option to play bass anywhere in the solo tour and that is what my wife wants to do.

He's mistaken. There is a "solo tour" for guitar, drums, and vocals. Bass is available in Quick Play and various forms of multiplayer.

I heard somewhere that you are able to play Bass in Solo tour if you make a guitarist and then just buy a bass guitar from the store :)
